New Zealand's worst mass shooting in history: 49 dead at 2 mosques in Christchurch

Unfortunately New Zealand doesn't have the death penalty, so these creatures will escape justice. Unless the people choose to take it themselves.
 
So much pain will ripple from this. I know a guy who lost a friend in the mass shooting in Australia, and it shook him to the core, both the loss of his friend as well as realizing someone could kill him at any time when he least expects it for reasons known only to the killer (and could be entirely impersonal to him).

My deepest sympathies to the dead and the survivors. 😞
 
How horrific. Terrorism in NZ is not something I thought possible. Especially in christchurch which has had its fair share of natural disasters.

Unfortunately the invention of 3D printers/ghost boxes has made it near on impossible to regulate gun ownership in both australia and nz. Its a relief they are in custody but scary to the extent it was planned.

Just goes to show how easily unstable people can be riled up by nastiness online. We all have a responsibility not to support it. This includes in media. The media has not reported kindly on religion over the past few years.
 
I’ll never understand this, even if everyone has different opinions on Islam what happened was just plain evil. 50 is a ridiculous number of deaths.
Who was the shooter at the second mosque?

There were at least 4 people involved in planning the attacks. 4 in custody last I read.
Attacking at places of worship seems like a particularly cowardly thing to do because people are so vulnerable there, I'm reminded of the shooting at the synagogue and Dylan Roof shooting up that church, it's clearly meant to instill terror and shows that the perpetrator knew to hit them on a Friday because that's when he'd get maximal damage. Psychopathic and frightening. It's disheartening to see mosques having to close down for security. It's just horrific.

This is also very unsettling and disturbing, I know that Eliot Rodgers filmed himself too before killing people, it's a very sad aspect of our culture.
 
Brutal. Another right wing terrorist atrocity. We get treated to years of "Muslims are evil!" in all the right wing billionaire owned media and now today it's all "that's awful, why would someone do that?". Well **** them. This is on them as well as the shooter.

The rest of us need to be vigilant because if you're different you're a target. Muslims in Christchurch, Jewish in Pittsburgh, Gay in Orlando, an MP who stands up for refugee rights in the UK or a socialist in Utoya.

It hasn't been declared a terrorist plot yet, just a single extremist working by himself.
There's no point going on about some billionaire newspaper owner wants to be stated as all media has promoted the hate campaign at some point or another.
What they failed to make note of is that many religions have splinter groups, those group are more likely to contain the extremists.
And who is reporting this crime to us the media.
It still doesn't say the whole story, as you will no doubt find out in a week or so.

It is, and it has steadily got so much worse since 2008. I am unsure if the masses realise that support for this behaviour starts with those who write nasty things online about personal choices and freedoms. The encouragement dangerous minds crave is as simple as a "like" on a snarky post. Those who use their words in the rudest ways gain popularity, and it snowballs on unmoderated sites. Personal responsibility for simple actions online can be hard to grasp, but at a distance it is easy to see how hate is generated and progresses. The shooter thought himself a hero, acting on the words and encouragement of those he communicated with. Of course terrorists are betting on fame for this, it's awful that most of us can rattle off names of mass murderers and serial killers, yet would struggle to name those who have worked endlessly at ground level lifting the quality of life for the least fortunate in the world.

Spot on. The media feeds us what we want to hear to an extent. But it starts with someone deciding to be a prick, and gaining popularity for their arsehole behaviour. It encourages more arsehole behaviour. The media feeds it back to us and the spiral to hell begins.

The links to the shooting would not be getting continuously uploaded if there was not an audience for it. Reminds me of the beheading video uploaded a few years back, one of the most unsettling things I have ever witnessed. I did not expect to be watching that on a work colleagues facebook page. These kinds of crimes are equally on anyone who consumes that sort of content as it is the media who promote it.

YouTube and the like actually encourage outrage as it's more profitable for their advertisers. People can be "ghost banned" for NOT easily being shunted into one political bubble or the other.
Hopefully one day someone is going to find a way to trace those who put up inflammatory comments. And hopefully the justice system becomes interested in justice, heck they may even investigate 'free speech' that insights violence.
