Since shared universes – as in collections of movies and/or TV shows set in the same universes – are definitely a trend in Hollywood right now, Sony has planned one shared universe with Ghostbusters, but they have another one lined up.

Robin Hood. Sony is in talks to make a seven-figure deal to purchase a pitch for a Robin Hood universe, wherein Robin Hood and his Merry Men – Little John, Friar Tuck, Will Scarlett – are re-envisioned as being an Avengers-style team of heroes from England’s Middle Ages, with each getting their own solo film in addition to one (or more) “team-up" movies. Noticeably absent of course is the Maid Marian stand-alone film.

I don't know about Robin Hood, but I could have gone for an Knights of Camelot shared universe. Arthur, Merlin, Morgan le Fay, Percivale, Lancelot, Bors, Gawain, Mordred. H-e double l's yeah.. that would be an awesome shared universe.

Yea i heard about this. Apparently there's like 4 studios each making their own Robin Hood movies. And a shared universe? Who needs this many Robin Hood movies? Is there really a big fan base for Robin Hood? People that have seen every incarnation? It just didn't sound like a good idea to me. Maybe just one movie, something different that we haven't seen yet. But what is the need of a shared universe? As Friar Tuck movie? No thanks. Maybe like you said a knights shared universe but even that is thin.

Yea i heard about this. Apparently there's like 4 studios each making their own Robin Hood movies.

No, there are 7 Robin Hood properties in various states of production, but only one is going to be a shared universe.

1. Warner Bros.' Robin Hood
Warners Brothers just announced it was working on its own "Robin Hood" film. So far, details are scarce.It is produced by one of the producers of "The Lego Movie" but as far as we know, this is not Lego Robin Hood.

2. Liongate's "Robin Hood: Origins"
Lionsgate landed this reboot that promises to be dark and gritty. It sounds almost identical to the version made in 2010, and we all know how that worked out. Either the second time is the charm, or this could go the way of "The Amazing Spider-Man 2."

3. Disney's "Nottingham & Hood"Rather than a re-imagining, Disney is taking a "revisionist" tone with the animated "Nottingham & Hood." They hope to start up a family friendly franchise, and the speculative screenplay apparently has a "Pirates of the Caribbean" tone. This isn't Disney's first try with this story: in 1973, they made the animated classic that starred a cartoon fox as Robin Hood.

4. Sony's "Hood"
Sony is planning a shared universe around Sherwood Forest as well, which they compare to "Fast and Furious" and "Mission: Impossible" franchises.

5. "Robin Hood and the Prince of Aragon"
"Robin Hood and the Prince of Aragon" is described only as a "vibrant pop-punk retelling." The rest of the details are shrouded in mystery, but a description like that is definitely an interesting way to get attention.

6. "Robin Hood 2058"
Like "Prince of Aragon," "Robin Hood 2058" offers a compelling yet mysterious promise: this one will bring Robin Hood into the future for a sci-fi adventure. The script was penned by Jason Hall, who previously wrote "American Sniper," which grossed $541.2 million worldwide.

7. "Outlaw Chronicles"
It was also recently announced that Robin Hood will now be making his way over to television as well. This one is adapted from a book series called "The Outlaw Chronicles," which is a re-imagined take on the legend. It seems like every one of these takes is a "re-imagining" of sorts.

Makes sense to me. We could do with a real Robin Hood now more than ever. Since that's not going to be happening anytime soon we'll get some films about what a good idea it is. The pop punk one sounds good. I always thought the old timey music let the whole idea down.

Who needs that much Robin Hood? I wonder if this has anything to do with the popularity of the Robin Hood character on Once Upon a Time. I personally don't really care. Some of these probably won't get made, and most of them probably won't be any good. Too many studios wanting to do shared universes, and for stupid stuff that doesn't need one.

I've actually never seen the Disney animated Robin Hood with the fox. lol

Yeah, I think I'll steer clear of all of them- none of them seem that interesting, especially since in the UK Robin Hood has been done A LOT.

We had that Russell Crowe movie and a truly terrible tv series here recently.

The best Robin Hood adaptation ever was the BBC's 'Robin Of Sherwood' series in the eighties. Had a real mythic quality to it.

(And of course the one where Robin Hood was a fox, King John was a Lion and there were these cute little poor mice that lived in a church, etc...)

I'd also much prefer this. King Arthur and all those tales have a great epic sweep to them that could actually use a multi-film format to great effect.
Start with Uther Pendragon and then go onto the forming of Camelot, the green knight, the epic quest for the Grail, Lancelot's betrayal, Morgan le Fey's plotting, and the end with Arthur's death and the fall of the kingdom.
It could have sweeping romance, sword fighting and battles, magic and myth/world building, betrayal, some really dark stuff.

Richard Armitage was the best thing in it- which is unfortunate. How can I root for Robin Hood when Guy of Gisborn is so much better (looking, acting-wise, charisma, etc)

Plus almost all the other characters were awful. Robin, the Sheriff, all the merry men (and 'Jack' whatever that was supposed to be). Robin Hood wielding a scimitar? wtf? And using a horse bow that he picked up in the Holy Lands instead of a longbow? Give me a break.

The writers said at the start of the series that they weren't going to include Friar Tuck because they wanted things to be 'realistic' and then have some of the stupidest casting choices I've ever seen.

I liked RA better in 'Strikeback' anyway. 🙂
