Nick is in Portland at a convention and mentioned "I auditioned for the part that J. August Richards got on Agents of Shield, but when I found out J got it, he's perfect for it." which was posted on Twitter (source).

It would have been awesome to see Nick in an action role, but J is awesome in that role.

J also replied "@NicholasBrendon What a class act... Thank you!"

I think its kinda crazy either would have had to audition for a Whedon show though? Any other show sure, but I had assumed the role was offered to J, as it's a Whedon show and they should kinda be aware of what they can do, no?

I'm actually REALLY okay with the fact that he didn't get this part.

As much as I hug and kiss Nick, this isn't a role for him. I think he's a fantastic actor, but I don't think he has the screen presence to pull this role off. All you have to do is look at J.'s first scene as Gunn to know he can do this standing on his head.

The better man definitely won here, but it's nice to know Nick isn't bitter and J. was a big enough man to thank him for the praise.

It all depends on how much Joss actually has to do with SHIELD. Jed and Maurissa seem to be more in charge on a day-to-day basis, with Joss laying the ground rules - much like the comics. If the script was written and then handed off to casting directors, it could have been that no one really had anyone specific in mind for the role, and were probably as surprised as anyone when J. and Nick showed up at the auditions.

Though, it does actually make me feel a bit better, knowing that J. earned this role. A lot of people are just assuming that Joss is giving away roles to the people he likes, so this proves that rumor false. (With the exception of Much Ado, obviously.)

Maybe in the future, when Alan Tudyk inevitably turns up, people will just assume he auditioned like everyone else. 😉
 
Seà¡n Maher spoke a bit about this kind of thing in some behind the scenes stuff for Much Ado.? He was saying that Joss doesn't just hand out roles unless he thinks they are right for that actor. I think he mentioned that Joss had turned him down for a couple of things.

Im glad Nick didnt get that part. J. August Richards did a fantastic job, and suited the role perfectly. They made a good choice.
 
Can imagine Nick in that role. Think that could've worked just as well.
I still haven't seen Nick in anything else than BtVS actually. Should check out Criminal Minds or something one day.

Now, J. August Richards has done a great job so it's not like I had preferred it to be Nick or anything...

I think it's more the show of Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen than Joss, although they don't have final say when it comes to auditions. That decidion gets made by the powers that be for the channel that airs SHIELD in the US.

Even then... Didn't the late, great Andy Hallett say that Joss based the Lorne character on Andy's real personality, but still made him audition for the part? 😛
