So revently I was reading a thread here on BB and someone mentioned that Joss originally wrote the part of Mal from Firefly. This is very surprising to me because it's hard for me to picture Nick Brendon in this role.

So I was wondering if anyone thought he would have been good in this role, I certaintly don't, but what about you?

I've never heard of this before, but it's interesting to think about. It's hard for me to picture anyone but Nathan Fillion in that role (he's so good at it), and while I don't think Nicholas Brendan is the best actor in the world, I could sort of see him there. Mal or not though, I would have taken him on Firefly in any capacity.

It's a shame that he didn't do much besides Buffy. Everyone loved him as Xander, and it would have been neat to see him expand his range a little bit. Although I guess he doesn't really need to. He does so many conventions every year that it must be fun for him to get paid to meet people who love him and just kinda be Xander all the time still.

I've only seen the pilot of Firefly and Serenity, but I never really thought Nick Brendon was a great actor. He was okay (though I have admittedly not seen him in any roles outside of Xander).

We can never know how Nick had been in that role but since I love Nathan as Mal I'm glad things worked out the way did.

We're often quick to decide that "no one else but x can play that part" when we love a character. Reality is that it's all guesses. Maybe Nick had been as great or even greater than Nathan. Even if I doubt it.

Nathan Fillion was perfect. IMO, I don't think Nicholas Brendon is a great actor (he's okay), so I doubt he could have conveyed the bad*ssness, comedic and leadership qualities Nathan was able to

I really can't see Nick playing the type of character that Nathan Fillion portrayed as Mal Reynolds. Anything that he did with the character would have been totally different, which, of course, isn't necessarily a bad thing, any more than it would have been if someone else had been cast as Buffy from the very beginning. Certainly, he could have made the character his own and done a good job with it.

Maybe it's because I have mentally typecast him, but I can't see Nicholas Brendon as anyone other than Xander. Granted I haven't ever actually seen anything else he''s done, so it has nothing to do with my opinion of his acting range as such, I just don't see him as the grizzled war veteran in charge of a group of rag tag space-faring bunch of misfits. If he were to play any part on the crew of Serenity I would have said Wash, not that I think he would be as good as Alan Tudyk either. 🙂

I've watched Nick in Kitchen confidental and Criminal Minds. None of the characters is anywhere near captain Mal so they don't help with imagining how he'd be in that role.

Quite a lot of "famous" people.

I cannot even imagine Nick Brendon as Mal Reynolds, I just can't, I try and it just seems wrong to me. So though I have nothing against him I'm glad he didn't get the part because I don't think I would have cared much for him in it.

I think it's twice as hard to imagine Brendon playing Captain Reynolds than it would be normally
You need to both not see Nick Brendon as Xander and not see Reynolds as Nathan Fillion.

That is very hard to do and I admit that I can't quite do it myself either.

But somehow I still want to think that Nick Brendon could have pulled off a good Reynolds if given the chance.
