Notice some superheroes or "Adventure Time" characters wandering around near the Washington Convention Center last weekend? They were some of an estimated 7,000 people who attended the District's first-ever Awesome Con on Saturday and Sunday.
Nicholas Brendon, a veteran of comic conventions for his role as Xander Harris in "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," attended, automatically upping the credibility of an event organizers plan to make annual from now on.
"It just kind of seemed odd that there wasn't one already in D.C.," Ben Penrod said of the decision to organize a convention in the District. He and Steve Anderson, who owns the Maryland-based store Third Eye Comics that officially sponsored the event, drew on past work on the Annapolis and Southern Maryland comic-cons. Penrod also credited District comic book stores and DC101 radio for word-of-mouth advertising. Brendon, who Penrod said was kept "very busy all weekend" by fans, posed for photos, gave autographs and attended a Q&A where he demonstrated his method for Xander's "snoopy dance."
