Nick weighs in on Buffy reboot

So, in case you haven't heard, the fine people at Warner Brothers have decided to honor/profane the memory of our beloved Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV series with a reboot movie. We know what we think of that idea, and we know what Buffy's father Joss Whedon told us he thinks of that idea, but what about the show's original castmembers? One original Scooby just spoke out to us about it:

We just caught up with original series star Nicholas Brendon, who is currently showcasing his drama chops on Private Practice's critically acclaimed rape storyline as sexual predator Lee McHenry. In Xander Harris' typical fashion, his first reaction when asked about the reboot was to make a joke.

"I hope their vampires don't glitter," quipped Brendon, referencing, of course, the sparkling vampires of the wildly successful Twilight franchise. Then, appearing hesitant to speak out of turn but confident about his point of view, he continued, "You know, listen...I think it's a mistake, I think that it's trying to kind of—they have to reach a whole completely new fanbase. And we already have that fanbase. So it's going to really be hard to kind of do that. But you know, everyone: They remade The Flintstones. Twice, I think."

In short, just because they're making a reboot doesn't mean we have to take it seriously! Every semi-successful franchise in media history comes around for a "reboot" in due time, whether or not a remake is called for, necessary, or wise. Hmmm...any chance that if we don't freak about it, it will just go away?

The reboot, to be written by novice scribe Whit Anderson (you can find her on Twitter: @WhitAnd), is still in the development stage.

Haha, of course he wouldn't totally go all out on the remake. Seems like he still likes to make light of some of the negative stuff, which is nice compared to some of the reactions we've read from other people involved in the original television show. He has a point though. Lots of stuff gets remade, and a bunch of fans whining about it usually never stops the studio from doing it when they know the project will make them a profit.

I like his reaction best, he's not just saying it wont work because of no Joss, he's saying there is already a fanbase.

I still disagree as there is a newer generation that haven't watched Buffy.

I will be truly surprised if anyone involved with the original show has anything really positive to say about the reboot. On the other hand, just to play devil's advocate here, what do you think that their reaction would be if the new movie were a huge success, both financially and with the fans, led to a series of new movies, and the critics acclaimed the new Buffy as being greater and more dynamic than Sarah ever was?

(I'll never happen, we all know that, but it would be interesting to see Joss', Sarah', Nicholas', and the others' reactions it it really were to happen.

I'd hate for that to happen, i guess it would hurt them too just like it would the original fans.

I wouldn't need to take it that far but if the movie is successful and not only moneywise I got a feeling that there would be a huge range of emotions. I honestly don't think all involved in the show would be as upset as some of the fans would like them to. Some of them I'm sure wouldn't be too happy about it though but publically they'd probably be pretty polite. Don't think they'd rave about it's greatness but sour grapes wouldn't fit any of them.

I would go so far as to say that at least one of regulars, Sarah, would be secretly very happy if some new actor were to become identified with the part, since it would remove her, at least a little bit, from the shadow of the role that still, in a way, holds her career back. "Former Buffy The Vampire Slayer" has almost become Sarah's first name over the years since the series ends, and I'm sure that she would like that to change. An actor too readily identified with a single role has a hard time being allowed to play anything else.

Most important thing I got out of that was Nick saying "I think it's a mistake." Really, how many actors from the show have to say the exact same thing before everyone is on board? For me, it just took Joss' email, but every other reaction I saw just added fuel to my fire... SO not seeing the reboot.

Whenever I hear about the reboot I think about those Twi-tards kids going to watch it and buying the series. When/If that happens Ill completely be turned off but BtVS

Getting this back on topic and away from the Twilight bashing, I think Nick handled it very well. He added his trademark sarcasm, but still refrained from saying anything hugely negative or that makes it seem like he's saying "No one will ever be as good a cast as we were".

I'm sorry if I offended you by my comment. I used the phrase because I've seen Twilight paraphernalia on cafepress.com that says stuff like "Proud Twi-tard" or "Twerd" so I didn't think it was an offensive term. Also, I actually LIKE Twilight (though I do have my issues with it) so for me to speak poorly of the fans would be to speak poorly of myself. I'm not a fanatic with it the way I am with Buffy though.
