Police in Nigeria are holding a goat on suspicion of attempted armed robbery.

In a front-page article on Friday, the Vanguard newspaper said that two men tried to steal a Mazda in Kwara state last week.

As vigilantes cornered him, one suspect transformed himself into a goat, the paper quoted police spokesman Tunde Mohammed as saying.

The other suspect escaped.

"The group of vigilante men came to report that while they were on patrol they saw some hoodlums attempting to rob a car. They pursued them. However one of them escaped while the other turned into a goat," Mr Mohammed told Reuters by telephone.

"We cannot confirm the story, but the goat is in our custody. We cannot base our information on something mystical. It is something that has to be proved scientifically, that a human being turned into a goat," he said.

The newspaper reported that police paraded the goat before journalists, and published a picture of the animal.

Belief in black magic is widespread in Nigeria, particularly in far-flung rural areas.

Residents came to the police station to see the goat, photographed in one national newspaper on its knees next to a pile of straw.

This is so stupid. Like it's stupid. It's not even funny. Just so dumb trying to be cool.
 
I think it's absolutely hilarious - and bizarre that the locals (and for that matter the police) actually believe it's possible for a human to turn into a goat. Huh.

There are people who, apparently, believe that Charmed is better than Buffy so I don't think anything is impossible.

Just as a point, many cultures throughout history have believed that a man can transform into animals and vice versa.

Just because it seems absurd to some of us doesn't mean anyone has the right to judge a different cultures view on something.

Witchcraft is still believed to have power in countries like the UK and US, just as an FYI too.

I agree, besides, a high majority of people supposedly believe in witchcraft on this board. Mind you, I dare say they are a little inconsistent in their belief.

If there is such a thing as a warlock powerful enough to transform himself into a goat, I think the police are a little overconfident in trying to keep him under arrest. 🙂

I don't really know about a were-goat lycanthrope, though... but weres tend to come as carnivores, right? 😛


On a more serious note, the big weirdness in the situation is the "trying to find out if it's scientifically possible" part. You either have a world view based on science, or based on magic... usually not both. A policeman, who by his job definition probably won't be an expert on either side, to try making both meet by "scientifically proving magic" - that is the part where I can't help but go WTF? at the whole thing, even if I tend not to rule out the possibility of magic, per se.

Ah that old trick. Yeah, anytime im out stealing cars i just take a dog or something along and if i run into trouble i blame the dog. It works a treat.
