Nightmares...Perhaps a bit of an homage to NOES?

Missed this one during it's original run, reminded me of N0ES, especially the scene when the girl was attacked in the school basement.

Random Thought: the 1st candy bar Zander picked up and ate, looked like a DOGGIE TURD.

I HATE CLOWNS!!!!

so watching him punch that ones lights out was awesome. Really wish there was a National Holiday for whuppin clown's arses.

Buffy as a Vampire, so NOT a good look for her.: erm :

The perfect ending would've been for Ugly Man to beat Billy's coach to death.

NOES stands for "Nightmare On Elm Street" for those wondering.

Anyway, I see where your coming from espicially with the basement thing but I don't really think it was a homage but I do think the nursery rhyme in Hush sung by the little girl was cause Joss said it was in the commentary plus it reminds me of it.

Killed by Death was more 'NOES' for me.

The demon in that episode was creepy and Freddy like cause of his movements. I think I remember in the S2 DVD where someone mentioned that but i'm not sure
Killed by Death seemed a lot more Nightmare on Elm Street...though, I guess this could be considered an homage too.
 
Nighmares is one of my all time favorite Buffy episodes. The best part was when Buffy became a vampire. She became the one thing she was put on this earth to fight. Then she turned away from Giles,Willow and Xander b/c she didnt want them to see her that way. They knew that she was still Buffy inside, even though she looked like a vamp and they still wanted and needed her help. Which I thought was pretty cool. It was really sad when Giles thought that he had failed her. That was his worst nightmare.

The clown in Xanders nightmare was so creepy. I hate clowns. They scare the crap out of me!

It was funny when Willow had to go on stage in the geisha outfit and sing with the opera singer. All she could do was squeek. I found that to be pretty entertaining.
 
I agree with the people who have said that Killed By Death is more NOES, not that I'm a huge fan of NOES, so other than appearance I cant really comment.

I love Nightmares. The fact that Giles and Buffy's nightmares were somewhat similar was very sweet, even at that time they were very close. I have to agree with xanders clown fear, thats my biggest phobia of all time, so loved that he overcame that!

I think its a very strong topic to look into, especially for a show only in its first season. Its actually looking and making public the problem with child abuse. That's what I loved about this show!

I can see NOES in Buffy, but more DreamWarriors for the ep Nightmares... that played on their fears.

Tim Curry!!!! And Nightmare on Elm Street movies are my all-time fave horror flicks!
I HATE CLOWNS! That is just to much happiness! There is a reason that a clown is a villain in so many movies and TV shows out there. Because they are just plain creepy!

Nightmares had elements off NOES, but I agree with the people that said that Killed by death was more like NOES. The biggest difference between NOES and Nightmares is that Nightmares is everyones individual fears and not all of them could kill you. Where as Killed by Death is like NOES because there is just this one guy who killed sick children in their sleep.

However, both episodes are much BETTER than NOES ever was, in my opinion at least.

Mr. Summers' cruelty towards Buffy is definitely something that sticks in my mind, since it's one of the few times we see or hear Buffy's father (even though it's only a nightmare). I wish the series would have more deeply explored Buffy's relationship to her father, since that relationship could possibly explain part of her personality (especially the colder aspects). After all, Giles becomes a father figure to Buffy precisely because her biological father is absent from her life. But Giles could never be a true father figure because his main job was to be her Watcher, more of a teacher than a steady, guiding influence in her life. It's pretty clear from the "Giles is leaving" episodes later in the series that Buffy has abandonment issues when it comes to male father figures in her life, and so the series deals with Buffy's father issues in that way. Likewise, in this episode, when Giles is dreaming that he is at Buffy's gravesite, it is very much as if he is mourning his daughter's death. So, Giles filled a void in that respect, but that void has never been completely filled, which might help explain why Buffy has had complicated, tumultuous relationships with the men in her life (except perhaps Xander).

I think it would have been interesting to see anybody write a fanfic with the scoobies dealing with IT.
Nightmares does remind me of NOES somehow, but I do agree with Willowsgirl that Nightmares is better. It has more layer in my opinion.
Also I did miss a better exploration for the relationship between Buffy and her father.
Maybe Joss left him in the background like this at purpose ? I don't know..
 
I just got through watching this episode and I thought it was quite interesting that Buffy was buried alive. Joss is a genius but I doubt that he knew she would be buried alive and resurrected in Season Six. Then again maybe he did. I thought it was quiet poetic and foreshadowing in hindsight!
 
I agree that Killed By Death is a lot more like NOES than Nightmares.
Thinking about Nightmares now it was really a very good episode.
Everyones nightmares were very "them" for the most part.
Xander showing up for class in his underwear, being afraid of clowns.
Willow with her stage fright.
Cordelia with her bad hair and the chess club
Giles and not being able to read, getting lost in the stacks, failing with Buffy
Buffy with not knowing the answers for her test, her father saying the reason her parents broke up was her fault, being turned into a vampire.

Their nightmares reflect them very well.
 
Nightmares is actually a really good episode, clown chasing xander = funny\bloody scary!

I think one the of the scariest parts about the clown, other than the knife he was carrying was that laugh.
