NIU Shooting

Unfortunately, and tragically, the story of this shooting is gonna plant the idea of doing the same thing into the minds of at least dozens if not a hundred or more sick people around the country, one or two of whom will probably wind up doing the same thing. Obviously, something like this has to be reported, even though it has that potential. It's a case of damned if you do, and damned if you don't.
 
More unfortunately, as a sign of the changing times, the several times I've read this article at different places, my reaction has always been the same rather nonchalant, "Oh. Another one?"

Yeah, it's amazing what you can get used to. Amazing, and more than a little bit frightening sometimes...
It's hard to get used to it though when you actually went to that school, and had seven classes in that auditorium in that lecture hall. You can even remember yourself going through the back entrance and entering the auditorium the same way the shooter did.

My husband and I both went to NIU, and we have a friend who is still down there that was in our wedding, and we have not heard from them yet. We've called and myspaced and tried to im, but he's been idle on im since yesterday morning. So, it's very hard to think "nonchanlantly" about this.

As of this morning, the death toll is up to 7 (6 innocent victims and 1 killer). There are still a few in critical condition.

I'll pray that your friend is alright, and that those other kids are able to get on with their lives after a trauma like that.

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to offend. Only that when Columbine happened there was mass shock, and now it's more of a slight depression than anything else as these shootings keep cropping up.

I can't speak for anyone but myself, but I wasn't offended. If that was your intention, pal, I guess I missed it. (Don't worry about it.)
By the way,watch...as this story continues to unfold,we're probably going to find out that the shooter was screwed up,all the signs were there...and,tragically,they were ignored until it was way too late to try to undo the damage. I know that,human nature being what it is,we're going to hurt people with the comments we make(whether spoken,or on a bulletin board,or other forms of communication)-but it still couldn't hurt to TRY to use some tact when talking with others.
 
More importantly they'll try and work in "HE WAS A GOTH!" somewhere. Wait and see. He might've had a single Bauhaus song on his computer, therefore turning him into a serial killer.

SB please let us know once you hear from yoru friend. I know that its hard to deal with the worry you have...I know that it hit so close to home...and part of me can say and truly mean "I know how you feel", because I know how I felt when Virginia tech Happened. My heart still aches for the family and freinds of those victims ...I was lucky to have only known one of the victims that died, Mathew Guantly, whom I attended High School with, who was a dedicated student and athlete, a team leader the younger kids looked up to him, and who I could truly say was a NICE person! I hope that you wont find anyone you know to be harmed, though it doesnt make it any less tragic. HUGS darling...
 
I just heard about this now. I can't believe this has happened again. My prayers are with you and yours SP.

I can't help but be anxious about this. I'll be going to the states next september to spend a semester in MA. This is the 3rd college shooting in the last year. I'm beginning to wonder if going to Bridgewater is worth it.

Jesus, do I ever agree with you.

In high school, I had people tell my boyfriend that I was 'scary' and they were 'afraid I was gonna shoot up the school'. The media can kiss my ass. Gotta love all the stereotyped bullshit.

I hope your friend is safe, SB. A friend of mine lost a friend of hers in that shooting...it's a bit surreal to me, since DeKalb is so close to where I live and I have friends and family who went to that college. I feel like I live in the middle of East Cupcake, Illinois where nothing happens, and this is just...weird.

Don't let it make your decision. No matter where you go, you always run the risk of something happening. Someone could walk into your place of business and start shooting, or just start a rampage in the middle of the street. You can't let it deter you, or you'll always be living your life in fear!

It is definitely worth it!


Yeah, MR, when you live in or near Dekalb, in the middle of cornfields, you feel like you are in the middle of absolutely nowhere. I lived on the NIU campus for four years (2 in a dorm and 2 in an apartment).

We did hear from our friend and I'm happy to report that he is okay. 🙂
