No Big Bad for S7

How would you feel if Season 7 had no Big Bad? No First? No Caleb? No Potentials? Instead the season would have been focused on the characters' problems like:
  • Buffy's struggle with her AR while adjusting to her new job as guidance counselor and fighting to look on the bright side of life instead of the dark side which she was wallowing in last season
  • Dawn's troubles (normal and supernatural) in the rebuilt Sunnydale High
  • Xander and Anya's rift
  • Anya's doubts about being a Vengeance Demon again
  • Spike's "soul" conflict and dealing with the fallout of his behavior last season which would not only affect his relationship with Buffy but the Scoobies as well
  • The rebuilding of Buffy and Spike's relationship
  • Willow's magic "recovery", and learning to come terms with her loss of Tara, her Dark Willow phase, and who she is as a person
  • Giles feeling torn between his life in England and his responsibilities to Buffy and the others in Sunnydale in the wake of Willow's dark magic fueled rampage which occured when he wasn't there for his surrogate children
At most, there would be the occasional monster of week but the primary focus would be on the characters and their relationships instead of the routine fight aganist a season-centered Big Bad. Principal Wood could just be a regular guy. Faith could still pop up in S7 because for different reasons.

I love The First - I love the whole idea of it and its manipulations. Caleb sums it up really well:

"You're everywhere. You're in the hearts of little children, in the souls of the rich, you're the fire that makes people kill and hate, the cleansing fire that will cure the world of weakness. They're just sinners. You are Sin."

In my opinion I dont think Season 7 would have been as great without it! Theres got to be a Big Bad in a season - its what makes it so thrilling and edge-of-your-seat!! Don't get me wrong, often personal issues are just as fascinating to watch on screen and I love focus on character but that also includes the Big Bad.

To sum up - I would prefer the Big Bad (The First and Caleb) to stay 🙂

Certainly agree with [MENTION=11561]TheAnnointedOne[/MENTION] , i think every season HAS to have a 'Big Bad' i don't think it would be the same if there wasn't that one enemy that the group have to go against and makes every episode that little bit better.
 
I think instead of getting rid of the First, I'd use him better than the writers did. I'd make him appear as Buffy to all the Scoobies and mislead them badly, appear as Jesse to Xander, Jenny to Giles, Halfrek to Anya.

Yup, I agree with what you are saying. Although I do love The First as the Big Bad and the whole concept of it, there are ways in which I think it could have been used better and further. I am currently on the eighth episode of Season 7 and havent watched this season since it orginally aired so I will see how I feel about it this time around.

The one thing I will say is that its interesting to compare the representation of the First here and in S3's Amends. For one thing it had Jenny in Amends (and I think she is INCREDIBLE as evil - so amazing to watch). But I remember The First in Amends being able to actully touch Angel - and from what I can remember The First can't do this in s7, at least i dont think it has so far. It was also able to bring Buffy into Angel's dream in Amends - an element which would have worked so well in S7. It would have been interesting if the writers played with this. Actually watching someone's memories play out is a cool concept. Buffy could have seen Spike as William for example!!!
