Buffy is my favorite show of all-time. It's the reason I'm studying to be a writer. Angel on the other-hand, is down there in quality to me. It's not the worst show I've ever seen, but I find it extremely boring and the first couple episodes haven't even made sense. I understand I have to give the show a longer chance, but when I watch Buffy, sure it has vampires and demons, but it's realistic in some way, I'm very bad OCD, and when a show doesn't make sense to me the first couple episodes, it just takes me out of the concept completely. To me, it makes Angel very unrealistic and I even made it to the episode when Doyle dies and wasn't filled with an ounce of emotion what so ever. I understand, like Tara's death it wasn't as much going for emotional as shocking. But, I just didn't care period and I atleast still shed a few tears for Tara. Cordelia is one of my favorite characters but I find Angel, Doyle, and Wesley very cardboard and don't have the patience to wait for the other characters to be introduced, so I'll just skip this I think.

I really do hope you give Angel another chance. It's very different compared to Buffy, but I think that if you gave it a chance, it might surprise you! Me? I fell in love with the show from the very first scene with Angel at the bar getting his fake-drunk on.

Angel is fab, I'm only on S2 at the moment, but it has a very "grown up Buffy" feel, to me. Stick with it, for sure.

I haven't seen AtS S1 for a while, so I can't answer your continuity question, but I never much bothered with common sense in the Buffyverse. Let's face it, Joss and the other writers may be masterful with writing characters, but they sure fail at air-tight plots. Like the infamous Ubervamps who were so easily killed. Or the fact that they turned the Key in Dawn, a human who could be easily bled, rather than, as I've seen in another post, a rock on some distant mountain. MST3K chant~

Here's a question. Do you have to like Angel the character to like the show itself? I mean, I liked Buffy, but I have friends who despise her and they still loved Buffy the Vampire Slayer. With Angel, however, it seems like where as Buffy didn't focus to heavily on just the titular character and had enough rounded out supporting cast that you could be distracted with Buffy's sometimes "selfishness" by something crazy Willow and Xander were going through, Angel is just that, "Angel!" 24/7. Something about his past etc. And I hated him. He's so boring and one-dimensional to me.
I was the same way about Angel...the first season has some seriously great episodes if you stick it out 🙂
I gave up after season one six months ago but just started up again with season two and i have to admit its getting a lot better. 🙂 i hope you decide to keep watching

AtS is more focused on Angel himself, but it does cast the light on other characters. I actually hated Angel in BtVS--he was just some brooding boyfriend, oh tortured blah blah--but on AtS his character is much more interesting and well-rounded. I actually really like him on AtS.

In comparison to Buffy, I really do not like Angel. I like season 1, season 2 is a little "ok... let's move on," I LOVE season 3, season 4 is like... the one of the worst trainwrecks I've ever seen, and season 5 is just fun and awesome. But when I rank the Whedon shows (Dollhouse and Firefly included), Angel's at the bottom.

Have you seen up to Five By Five and Sanctuary in s1 yet? Because really, that's where it gets really good. Then the s1 finale To Shanshu In L.A. is amazing.

It sucks that you don't like "Angel". But just because you enjoy one show by a creator doesn't always mean you're going to love other projects by that creator. For instance, I love "Felicity" but could never get invested in "Lost". Both are J.J. Abrams projects, and I thought I'd love "Lost" but didn't and you know what? That's ok. You don't have to love "Angel" just because you're a BtVS fan. It's kinda sad for you that you don't like it since it shows us the journeys of some fun characters from the Buffyverse, such as Angel, Cordelia, and Wesley, but there is no rule in the universe saying you must find a reason to love "Angel". You gave it a chance; if you don't like it, it's totally ok. 🙂
I think that Angel season 1 is a little so-so, not my favorite to re-watch, because I think the show was trying to find it's footing at that point and most episodes are stand-alone and not all too engaging. Trust me that by the time you get to season 2 it starts to pick up its speed and it doesn't really slow down from there 🙂
I think it was just desperate there at the end, I seem to remember something about 'bodily fluids' needed to be exchanged (could be wrong haven't watched the ep since sometime this summer) but as the body it was in was deteriorating the demon was desperate to just get into a fresh body and probably wasn't concerned about a 'right fit' or whatever. I think it was just doing anything to survive at that point, even if it was illogical 🙂

My perception of Angel, before I watched it AtS only saw BtVS, was that he was a really boring character. I didn't understand why he would get a show. But when I watched Angel I grew to like his character a WHOLE lot more.
The series does not have nearly as much humor as Buffy, but it's much more "dark" I feel, and as someone stated..more "grown up." It's just as good in my opinion. 🙂

I agree with the positive comments here. I liked AtS - not near as much as BtVS, but that would be unlikely in any event. I liked AtS so much that I began a rewatch as soon as I finished it. It does focus somewhat on Angel, but he becomes a much more interesting character, and there is enough focus on the other characters that it's interesting for that reason too. Wesley rocks, and Spike is lots of fun in season 5.

Based on what you say, you can't have seen very many of the Wesley episodes. He really is a terrific, developing, nuanced character, with all the complexity you would want to find in a character.
