No Layers bar in Gimp?

In the tutorial, it mentions a sidebar for gradients, patterns, etc. I don't have that sidebar for some reason. When I open up Gimp, I get the platform where the picture will be, and then I have the toolbox sidebar. Where do I find this other bar with the gradients and stuff?

thats what I get when I open GIMP, do you not have both sidebars?
