No Sarah on DVD extras?

You seem to assume everyone can handle the same amount of work. But not everyone can do that. Or want to.

Even if she wanted to do interviews, maybe she just didn't have the energy.

Not that I get why she would, since she probably did other interviews and such, and after all, how much time can people spend working and talking about their work before you start hating it, even if it is your dream job? From what I gather, popular actors have crazy lives, that would make me start to drink or pop pills. Filming the same scenes over and over again, doing interviews from time to time, having a personal life, having to get up at weird hours, waiting to film, filming the same scenes over and over again, and again and so on. I can imagine wanting to squeeze more into that. I mean, a commenteray might have to be done several times as well, to get it good. And not only would she have to talk for about 40 minutes, she would do so scriptless, maybe tired while having to sound like she wants to be there.

No clue if she thinks the way I would, but all in all, I can't blame her, whatever her reasons are. Even if they're just that she's not interested enough. It's her life after all. If someone called me a diva because I didn't want to work extra to please people I don't know, yet work hard for anyway to bring entertainment to, I'd be a bit unkind in my answer (and again, I repeat, this might not at all be how SMG thinks. Maybe she loves her fans a lot and are very sad she couldn't do extras).

I never said she was a diva first off. I understand all this as well but as an actor/actress you know what you are getting into. If you become successful and a big star you know you are going to be busy. So my thing is that really isn't an excuse in my eyes. That is like when celebrities complain about the paparazzi for example yes they are wrong sometimes but that is the way of the business you choose it simple as that. I am not dissing Sarah and I understand she may have had reasons but then again it is just a little odd when thinking about it how she couldn't fit in one interview. Some people are traveling non stop doing movies at the same time and she couldn't do one a season or one a few seasons? It is just a little weird. Again I understand everyone is different I just think the excuse that she was always busy doesn't fly the whole time.

About the other interviews I have seen Shania Twain do at least like five interviews all of the same topic in a week is it boring to listen to over and over again? Yes kind of but she wrote the book knows she has to promote it and does her job.

I also like to think the crew works just as much if not more. The writers are constantly working. I watched extras on Smallville and did not realize it took that long to do a script yet they sit down. Call me crazy but I think being a writer of a hit series is a little more difficult than being an actor.

And I don't get your "If you choose to get into a acting, you have to do lots of interviews as well" attitude, which is what I get from your posts. You make it seem like it's a mandatory part of the job, to do as many interviews as you can. I mean, didn't she already do some interviews? Why would she do more? Who decides when she reaches the quota?

I mean, I don't even know if doing interviews is a part of her contract. If it's not, she's taking it out of her personal time, working long irregular hours AND doing occasional interviews. I get that actors just like a lot of people have to promote your work some, just like "ordinary people" go to representation dinners and have lunch with their bosses. But who decides when Sarah has fulfilled her job, done enough promotion, when she's given her 100%? When she's done her job? Certainly not us.

You say writers have it harder? I would have no idea. I don't have the scheduele for the writers of BtVS or Sarah's, so I can't possible compare their schedueles week for week.

I just know that Sarah was in every episode, in lots of scenes, while only one or a few writers were credited per ep, not the whole crew. This implies that the workload for the writers weren't always as hard. I have no idea if this is true, but I would assume that they might get a hour or two over certain weeks, unless they have other work on the side, when they can go back and talk about episodes they wrote a while back.
 
I think we all agree that Sarah has a reputation for being a hard worker. There was obviously a legitimate reason that she wasnt in the extras but we are probably never going to know that reason. Im satisfied with her performances and thats going to have to be enough.

Not really. There's a bit of a myth when it comes to TV writing that they write the whole story and script themselves from scratch. The process changes from show to show, but for BTVS, the writers broke every story down beat by beat as a group, then the selected writer took that detailed outline and went to write the script dialogue. They usually had about 2 weeks to write it. Sometimes more, sometimes less. That's from a JE interview with Fireflyfans. Joss ran a rather loose writing ship and was known as an absentee showrunner. There'd be days when he just wouldn't show up and the writers sat around doing nothing. Scripts were frequently late (I think Gellar mentions not having a script for a scene in the BvB interview), thus burdening the film side of the production even more.

Commentary from the main cast is nearly non-existent on the DVDs with the rare exceptions of Seth Green, who did it after he left the show and Nic, James and Woodside who did it after the show ended. Gellar wasn't even in the country at that time. Here's what was said in a magazine interview: "In terms of the DVDs, they always did the commentaries during the show," Gellar said. "I was working constantly, three units. There was never time. It was unfortunate. It was a timing thing. If you tell a line producer, 'OK, we need Sarah for two hours on this day to do commentary,' the line producer is going to tell you, 'Uh-uh.' So that was why I didn't do it during the show. And if I had free time, if for some reason I was getting a day off, I was taking it. I was exhausted."

I read in another interview that Gellar worked that longest hours of any Fox production outside of Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny who got the split time. I cannot find that article at the moment, but I'll keep looking.

Thank you soo much for that quote from Sarah. It's always nice to hear the reasoning straight from the cast member's mouth. Commentary wise, it completely makes sense why she didn't have time to
record anything. The poor girl could only do so much without being expected to be in two places at the same time. By the way, my blackberry appears to hate me right now , so if this post comes out looking weird, blame the device 🙂

Thanks for posting this. It explains that Sarah just didn't have the chance to get involved in the commentaries.

I believe it is on the DVD set.

I don't have a lot to contribute to this discussion, except that I watched the behind-the-scenes extra for OMWF and was impressed with how much goes into doing an episode (well, especially that one, I'm sure it took longer!). I haven't watched all the DVD extras yet, but I've really enjoyed the ones I've watched.

No not that although I do think he bit off more than he could chew. I just don't really like him anymore. I mean I think he thinks he is better than he is that is the vibe I get and I think it is far from the truth.
 
Whatever the reason, who's ever fault it was (or wasn't) - speaking as a "fan", I was very disappointed not to see any commentaries with the actual "star" of the show. It's ridiculous... 7 seasons... I bought each separate DVD as it was released, and no "Buffy/Sarah" extras. None? Seriously?

Whatev! I still love the show, from beginning to end, and will always cherish it on DVD. And my "Angel" DVDs as well. (And Firefly... and Dollhouse... 😀 )

but you have to remember that the series was released on VHS first, and they don't have extras
I must say i always had that kind of opinion on SMG but after seeing her at the reunion there is no doubt in my mind that she loved Buffy and gave it everything she had.I think its very unfair that people keep coming down hard on her. She gave me a show i will love forever thanks to her amazing acting and im happy with that 🙂
