Seriously tho SMG attents the events she can as was with this convention,which shows she DOES care bout fans,she's just sometimes very busy🙂

Hey,
I have been watching the interviews, and special bonus features on the dvd's. ANd I have noticed something. I have seen pretty much all of the charectors, except smg. What's that about. Is she to cool to do interviews, or is that just a coincident? what do you guys think?
 
People say that Sarah doesn't want to have anything to do with Buffy anymore, and that she never liked to be interviewed about Buffy. I have read like one interview where she mentions Buffy at all. And she isn't in any of the features on the dvds (at least not in the region 2 dvds).
I know many people almost hate her for this.. and they say that she has done commentary or something for Scooby Doo, but doesn't want to do that for Buffy. I don't know why..
 
SMG seems to want to disassociate herself from Buffy. I'd imagine that after 7 seasons of doing the kind of acting we saw in Becoming and The Body, and getting absolutely no mainstream recognition for it, she probably reckons that as long as she's "Buffy" she'll never get to Julia Roberts levels of stardom. So, I guess it's fair enough (and her choice) if she wants to get as far and as quickly away from Buffy as possible. The problem is the way she went about it. In interviews etc, she seems ashamed of it, like a kid trying to prove how cool they are by making fun of what they know the other kids joke about. Fans, and the rest of the cast felt mildly insulted, not that she chose to quit Buffy, just how she did it. That she reckons Scooby Doo is more worthy of her time is something of a slap in the face. Look at Dushku. I know it's not the same, since it wasn't her name on the series, but still. When she wanted out of the Buffyverse, she politely said so. Fans were disappointed, but not insulted. She never seriously made fun of the role, or the show, or the fans, she just started acting in other things. She didn't alienate her existing fanbase, she just started building on it. As a result, she has a group of fans who would happily march off a cliff if she said the word, and increasing mainstream recognition. SMG has a reputation for being difficult, deserved or not, and fans are increasingly unwilling to defend her.

However, I can't deny she's a terrific actress, and largely because of her, I'm looking forward to the Grudge.
 
I really don't think she should be alienating herself from Buffy altogether... I mean it did make her famous. And any part in films, apart from Cruel Intentions is nothing compared to her role in Buffy. I think she's is really unwise to do what she is doing.
 
It's a gamble, no doubt about it. She's sacrificing part of the established fanbase in the hope of buying relatively quick mainstream credibility... I hope, for her sake it pays off, but long term it could cost her. But then, maybe she's right. Maybe the snobbery about Buffy really would hold her back... How many recently converted Buffy fans start conversations with the words "Well, with a dumb name like that, I wasn't expecting much..."
 
Of course it is her choice, if she is really tired of Buffy she shouldn't have to talk about it all the time. I think that Buffy was much better than Scooby Doo and other stuff she's doing now, but that's not my thing to decide I guess..
But did Sarah do a lot interviews about Buffy when she was still on the show..? I don't know when the first dvds came but it must have been some years ago right? And she doesn't do anything on any of them..
 
Ok.. I read an interview whit her after Buffy.. She was asked about this, why she left Buffy so completely. Don't remember exactly what she said, but I remember I started liking her more after reading that. (Maybe just because I think of her as Buffy, and I have a tendensy to feel sorry for Buffy about everything..)
 
I think we really need to give Sarah Michelle Gellar a break.

I remember from day 1, she was always the one promoting Buffy the vampire slayer. When it was still a new show on the WB, SMG would do magazine covers, interviews, autograph signings to not only promote BTVS, but to also promote the WB at the time. She was trying very hard to get the word out about the WB and it's shows. The president of the WB Network at the time even gave her the title "The Queen of the WB", when all her work finally paid off in Season 2 and the show became a huge hit, helping other WB shows like "7th Heaven" and "Dawson's Creek" take off.

Sarah Michelle Gellar didn't even ASK for a raise when the show became popular. The WB gave it to her and said that she deserved it. Even though everyone on the show was signed on for 5 seasons, SMG's contract expired in 1999 (after Season 3). SMG could've easily decided to leave the show then and move on to do movies because it seemed like they were working for her (I Know What You Did Last Summer, Cruel Intentions), but she renewed her contract through 2002. That was a huge commitment. If she really hated playing Buffy then she would've never renewed her contract.

Now, about her having less communication with the fans compared to others. Well think about it. Buffy is probably in 90% of the scenes. SMG has a lot of work to do on all those episodes and she probably liked to use that downtime to sleep, or spend time with her husband. In the early days of the show she would always complain about the long hours and not getting enough sleep. But she was always a good sport about it. The summer between Seasons 3 and 4 instead of going off and shooting movies like how she usually did, she took a well deserved 4 month hiatus from acting.

Sarah Michelle Gellar also wasn't the one that decided Buffy would end after Season 7, it was Joss Whedon. They both made that decision together. I don't understand why SMG gets the blame for that. And why Blame anyway? I'm glad they finally ended it. SMG and Joss both felt the show had hit it's final stride and decided to end it before it was to late, which was true.

True, Alyson Hannigan, and Nicholas Brendon also were on the show for 7 seasons and were great with the fans, but once again, they didn't play Buffy Summers, and they had a lot of down time. The only thing Alyson did was star in the American Pie movies, and Nicholas did 1 or two low budget movies, but that's it. SMG had to juggle playing a major role on a television show, trying to break into a movie career, be an A list celebrity, and trying to be nice to her fans all at once, give her a break.

Fair point, well made. I think much of the ill-feeling towards her comes from the fiascos about the stunt double and about the end of the show. My memory on that is hazy, but if I recall correctly, quite a few of the cast and crew found out that she wasn't returning from a magazine interview, and I think it was Alyson Hannigan who complained that it was an unfair way to do things. There are some strong rumours of problems with the rest of the cast, and though rumours are always dodgy, after so many they're hard to ignore.

But, having said that, in TV interviews etc, she seems quite good natured and funny (Little Ant and Dec's interview was fantastic...) and the LOTR MTV sketch was terrific. In the end, it doesn't matter really. I don't know the girl so I'll never be certain one way or the other. It doesn't affect her acting.
 
Percy - I am glad that you wrote this, cause I don't want to feel angry with Sarah. I do like her.. and understand that she feels that she has had enough of Buffy.. I didn't know anything about her when the show started so I didn't know she did all that..

(That is the thing I don't like, that they found out that way that she was leaving..)

I half agree with most of you here, on different points.

Points of interest - I don't believe SMG is interviewed on any of the DVDs, she only attended one fan conference (which was for a film, not Buffy), and has said in recent interviews she was "ashamed as a woman" over scenes in Season 6 of Buffy.

But. She's young. She's trying to forge a career as a well known actress. She simply can't do that if she keeps 'reverting to Buffy'. She knows full well if she wants a much bigger, better, well paid career, she has to move on from TV work.

I have three gripes with Sarah Michelle Gellar over her exit from Buffy.

1) She didn't tell Alyson Hannigan, Nicky Brendon, etc of her decision to quit Buffy. She was actually filming with them at the time. Alyson Hannigan says she found out when she read an interview with Sarah in a magazine, and Aly had to tell the rest of the cast they were jobless. That's ****ty.

2) Freddy Princes Jnr shot his mouth off just before "Chosen" aired in the US, gaining a fair amount of press coverage, saying the producers didn't respect Sarah. The producers being Joss, Marti etc. Freddy, Darlin', why did you tell the press this?

3) At the wrap party for Buffy, nearly all the actors from past and present turned up. Seth Green flew in from Australia (her was shooting his part in Scooby Doo 2 at the time). It was the final fairwell for the Buffy family. Where was Sarah? She didn't go.

I can totally see why Sarah wants a better career, and she really did put in the effort promoting the show, and let's not forget, shooting Buffy was a MONSTEROUS job. I'm just hoping she remembers Buffy The Vampire Slayer really touched a nerve with a great many people, which is why it deserves respect as a show-that-was.
 
At first, she didn't intend on staying on Buffy that long.She just wanted herself to become more known to the public.The reason why she didn't do any Buffy conventions, was because she didn't have time, and was too busy with her film career.Her first convention, was A Grudge con.She was there at Comic Con, to talk about the movie.In articles worldwide, it says that she left Buffy, because she wanted to start a film career.Remember, she didn't intend to stay in Buffy for many years.It was just the first level of her career.She was tired of staying witht hat one role.She wanted to move on.She was only really famous for her role as Buffy, back then.And non Buffy fans, didn't really know her.She wanted to appear in many movies, so the public will know her more.So she'll become more famous, and popular.After Buffy ended, she decided to leave Buffy.She didn't want to have to do with anything Buffy related, which includes interviews.She did say that she'll return on an ep of Angel.Unfortunatley,the only ep she was able to make, was the finale.But Joss didn't want the episode to be about her.He wanted it to be about the main characters, those who have been there since the beginning.I hope that answers your question.

I'm glad were not being harsh on her. She is a great actress and she's very fair. She worked 14 hour days and the only time she ever had off was a two week hiatus for Christmas and a 3-4 month break in the summer, and during that time she would try to shoot movies. In 2001 she got married and she hardly had anytime to see her husband. I can understand that she wanted to spend time with him.

Sarah was shooting "Scooby Doo 2" while the show had it's rap party. Sure Seth Green flew in because his part in the movie wasn't really that big, but SMG on the other hand had a big role in the film so maybe she didn't have time. She did eventually end up putting up an Ad thanking all the cast and crew and how much she appreciated being on the show and working with them. That was very nice of her.

Saying she doesn't want to be remembered as Buffy is not true. I think she doesn't want to be remembered ONLY for Buffy. She knows the role was her big break and she couldn't abandon that. She even offered to return to Angel playing the character. If she really hated playing Buffy she wouldn't have even considered returning to ATS. SMG could've easily left the show 3 or 4 seasons in, but she decided to stick by, while other actors like Shannon Doherty or Jennifer Aniston can't even manage to stay on their shows for more than 3 years before demanding a raise or a no show. SMG did non of that. Joss Whedon even said once that SMG never once complained about her salary, even when it was a small $35,000 in Season 2.

I wish her great success in her acting career. "The Grudge" looks like a really nice movie and i for sure will be checking it out when it hits theaters. Gotta support her.
 
To me,yes she should give some time to stuff like DVD's....but at the end of the day,she's probably very busy and what she decides to do is her own business and no-one elses.
