No thread for Riley?

I just noticed he is not on the list, there isn't a thread in 'ships devoted to him, and it just made me wonder. Even characters most people hate (say, Harmony) get more attention. I thought he had a compelling character and felt awful for Buffy when he left (although I always agreed with Spike that Buffy needed more monster in her man). I liked the growth and conflicts his character experienced and thought it was kind of interesting how he got "hooked" on getting bitten by vamp prostitutes. Goodbye Iowa, indeed

I hated Riley. He was too needy and clearly jealous of Buffy being stronger than him.
If you type "Riley" into the search field, I think you'll find that we have discussed Riley at length. We can talk about him again, of course, but you may want to read some of what's already been said first.

So Riley was discussed much, but he's still one of the main characters. And there are some new members who sure would like to discuss him, like me, for example. I also liked Riley, not one of my favorite characters but I think he was funny.

Re:

Buffy and Riley beat the "Nice guys finish last" theory to a bloody pulp. I enjoyed Riley's character. He was the extreme opposite to Buffy's last attempt at a boyfriend with Parker. Sure, I think he was a bit clingy toward the end. But I also think (put in the same situation) I would be too. He just came out of a total life change where his mother-figure betrayed him and his physical strength (which he relied on a great deal) was taken from him. Not to mention his job. He needed to feel wanted at that point in his life...and with slaying and mother's illness Buffy didn't have the strength or time to carry his burden. I don't honestly think he'd be so much different from Angel himself given immortality. Yoko Factor, anyone? That's one of my favorite eps. SO ANYWHOO...Big sore thumbs up to Riley. Iowa Rocks. 😉

I like how he is obviously drawn to Buffy's strength at the same time as he is threatened by her lack of need to depend on him. And I thought it was so moving when he told Xander that he knew Buffy didn't love him. Poor sad, not-monster-enough boy. And even though I didn't love Sam, I do like that Riley chose a very strong woman to marry rather than rebounding to some damsel in distress to pump his own ego.

Well Spike finishes last (sw)

Back on topic, I think the OrMaybeMidgets didn't mean that we're not discussing Riley at all, rather that he doesn't have his own category here in Cast & Characters. The reason for that, I believe, is that he's just not as popular. He hasn't been in that many episodes, I haven't heard a lot from the actor lately, and in general he's a bit of a meeh character. What I mean with that is, there's some characters people either love or hate. Even if they're hated, there's a lot to discuss, usually because there's always the other side with people who like that character. But Riley is more a character people don't particularly like or hate, he's just kinda meh. So that doesn't exactly spark hot discussions.

True. I still think he deserves his own thread.
It's perfectly okay to start new threads. 🙂 Please guys, let's not just send people to other threads.

I quite like Riley - not as Buffy's true love forever or anything, but I enjoyed his part in the story and the Initiative angle to his character. Very Mr. and Mrs. Smith lol

Oooh, I like the new avatar. Classy.
No, I'm sorry...I agree with Buffy. I didn't mean to say that you couldn't start a new thread, I just meant you might want to check out the other thread regarding Riley for some past insightful comments 😉

To be honest, Riley was about as interesting a character to me as a stack of cardboard. Yes, he was good-looking and sweet to Buffy, and was just what she needed at the time. Yet, he wasn't the long haul guy, and I think we all knew that all along. He was the rebound-guy and the filler while we waited for her and Spike to get together 😉

Wait are we gonna turn this into a I hate riley thread.... coool, im in. hahaha...ok... In all seriousness though, I think Riley was the perfect guy for Buffy, he just screwed it up. Buffy needed someone normal, and Riley was the closest that any human guy could ever be for her. She needed the normal mixed with the strength (human strength though) as well as no dark evil past or massive demons (literally) hanging on their back.

The trouble came in his ability to have strength in himself in the end. I get that a lot of this is blamed on Buffy (especially by Xander) but imo that isn't remotely true. Buffy was dealing with the sickness of her mother, in fact, that is the only time we really see her neglect Rileys feelings. It wasn't ever about actually neglecting Riley either, it was more her focus on her mother...If Riley truly "wanted to be there" for her as he stated, he should have made that exceptional effort to do so. Thats what you do when things are going crappy for your other half. He understood the situation but became needy of Buffys intimacy exactly at the point she was unable to give it.

I suppose thats a little thing, that they could have gotten over, but in the end he let it destroy himself. I mean goign to vampires to seek a bit of comfort. Obviously the parallel there is cheating (just listen to their breakup speech where they lay it on a little too thick). And then at the last hurdle, what does he do? He give Buffy an ultimatum with 5MINS TO GO!! Work it out, argument, a quick scuffle with some vamps and then the speech with Xander and she still couldn't make it on time to catch Riley. Since we know he was told the night before that he had the option to go with the Army, he had plenty of time to tell her.

He started as the perfect guy, and ended in a mess. I do like that he reformed himself when he eventually returned...at least I did until I read a post on here a couple months back detailing how that return in 'As you were' wasn't as it seemed. ie... Spike could never be the doctor.

Riley bugged the heck out of me the first couple times I watched the show, but I just started watching season 5 again yesterday and I kind of like him a bit more (especially in 5x01). His entrance with all the long hair was what set me off--the long-hair part, it was just too distracting for me. Not that I'm all that fashionable or anything but... it was just so... stupid looking. Hard to take him serious. Yes, that's superficial but it bugged me!

That said, I think that was really the only thing that actually bugged me about him. And the sucky-thing towards the end of his stay on the show. I like what he did for Buffy and how he treated her, but I just don't think it was ever meant to last. Maybe it could have if he was normal (ie: free from demon fighting) but that seemed to be too much of an issue. He may have respected her, and she may have respected him, but they never quite worked out their feelings about that whole situation.

In all of the programmes and the characters that passed through all seven seasons, there were two characters I really disliked:
1) Riley, he always reminded me of the spoilet brat syndrome.
2) Faith, she always tended to ruin things for Buffy and like Riley she acted the spoilt child, if either couldn't get there way they would get into a right stroppy mood.

Riley, yeah I've never found him all to interesting. I never really disliked him the way I disliked Xander and Faith (a little while ago). I've also never thought he was a great character. Just an extra that didn't seem to have much going on. I would have liked to have seen him stick around after the break up with Buffy and see him actually evolve as a character himself, not just buffy's boyfriend. We saw Angel evolve without Buffy around, and we saw Spike's character without Buffy (both before and after his relationship with her), so why not Riley huh?

(Sorry if this post makes the kinda sense that doesn't, I'm at work and on the phone to clients at the same time.)

I found Riley's story arch to be a fairly believable one. He did a lot of bad choices, that's true, but real people do that. Love isn't always chivalrous and altruistic. Sometimes we get too blinded by our own needs and pains to manage to see the needs of our lover clearly.

I suppose thats a little thing, that they could have gotten over, but in the end he let it destroy himself. I mean goign to vampires to seek a bit of comfort. Obviously the parallel there is cheating (just listen to their breakup speech where they lay it on a little too thick).

I've always seen it more as a parallel to drugs or drinking, even if it has clearly sexual connotations.

And then at the last hurdle, what does he do ? He give Buffy an ultimatum with 5MINS TO GO!! Work it out, argument, a quick scuffle with some vamps and then the speech with Xander and she still couldn't make it on time to catch Riley. I agree with you here. Emotional ultimatums are never the way to go.

Why did you find him so spoilt?
