I gotta say I disagree with you there Scobro.

The first thing that kept me from taking the show seriously was the name, and I find this to be the case with a lot of people over 30.
I thought "Buffy the Vampire Slayer? How interesting could a show be if it's week after week of a girl slaying Vampires? I mean really, how much storyline could there be in that?"

And Comedy? I've ALWAYS found the "comedy" aspect of the show to be way secondary if not thirdly to the story, acting Make-up and Effects.

It wasn't until I watched a few episodes and got hooked that I didn't miss a new episode when it came on.
I honestly never saw any of these promos because I only ever watched Buffy when it was on and a friend introduced it to me at that.
I will say this however, If it was just "a tweeny comedy about vampires" there's NO WAY it would have made it past Season One, no way it would have lasted for Seven Years and no way it would have the following it does now.

But I think it just depends if you saw the movie first, really. To me the movie was a comedy, so I was expecting the series to have that comedy tone. The first episode, I think it was Teacher's Pet, without a vampire- REALLY threw me for a loop too! But I thought the series was a continuation of the movie so I had alot of problems with it at first.

But in my mind, it was always comedy moreso than horror or drama.

What's really funny there is that I knew Three things going into the series:
1)The people who made the movie didn't take the subject matter seriously enough and that was why it failed horribly.
2)Because the movie failed so horribly I really didn't even associate it with the series.
3)Joss has said publicly and many times that he wasn't allowed the input that would have made the movie what he envisioned and as a result of that, the TV series was TOTALLY under his control and absolutely what he had wanted to do with the movie in the first place.

I really saw the "attempt" of humor in the movie as being the tell-tale sign that the directors and the actors weren't taking the subject matter seriously enough.
The directors of the movie took the title "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and jumped on the OBVIOUS thought that no-one would take it seriously.
Joss has alway's said his original idea for the character was that it would be cool to see the "little Blonde girl who's alway's the victim in horror movies, stand up for a change and kick butt."
Comedy is an aspect of that (just as it is in real life) but where Buffy is concerned it's NOT the over-riding goal nor was it ever intended to be.

I alway's look at the comedy as an aspect of the whole (even if I'm watching a comedy)

In theatre we alway's say, "The harder they laugh in the beginning, the harder they'lle cry at the end."

Not to pull episode's out of context but what about "Passions"?
Would you call that a comedy? How about "The Body"?

But by the very milieu how can you take it seriously.. it's lighthearted and leans towards the comedy. It's not 30 Days of Night or Salem's Lot.
I didnt say it was a comedy, I said "I look at it as a light-hearted comedy FIRST". When I think of Buffy I think of the comedy moments and the comedy episodes. Simple as that. Thats not to mean I view it as a sitcom, but I would never classify or characterize it as dark, or horror either, yet I know some that do.

I laughed when I heard the voice over for the Ats promo. The Buffy ones are much worse, but the way the ats guy is using his voice, and what he's saying, I expect a lot of people though "Huh, crappy action series". Funny when the voice sounds so serious and... "slutty"?, and then it's followed by a silly clip. I don't know if they meant to "mismatch" but it's fun to see.
 
wow they made buffy look ridiculous, its a good job i never saw these otherwise I probably wouldnt be on buffy-boards right now. Thank god I never saw these, the Angel promos are way better.
 
I spent most of my high school and college career defending the show because of trailers like those. Everyone I met that found out I loved BtVS would say "Isn't that show really freakin' stupid?" and I'd say "NO" and then explain to them why they needed to watch.

That really sucks. Did you tell them, "It was just the way they made the trailers/previews?"
