None of the couples got a happy ending? *Spoilers s8 & ATF*

My friend and I were watching a video with Buffy love qoutes today, and I realized something. None of the Buffyverse couples got a happy ending or ended up together in the finale. There are alot of couples, but here are some examples,

Buffy & Angel - broken up
Buffy & Riley - broken up
Buffy & Spike - Spike died and she "never loved him"
Willow and Oz- broke up
Willow & Tara - Tara died
Xander & Cordelia - broken up
Xander & Anya - broken up/ Anya died
Giles & Jenny - Jenny died
Angel & Cordy - Cordy died
Fred & Gunn - broken up
Fred & Wesley - Fred died

And so on and so on. It's a little depressing if you think about it. What do you guys think?
And than in the season 8 comics, we never hear of Faith and principal Woods again. I guess you could say Willow and Kennedy did.
 
In my opinion, it's not as bad as you make it sound. First of all, high school relationships. They are commonly known to not last, so who's surprised there? You have a few nice months/years together, and then it's over. Not really different from real life. So that leaves

Buffy & Riley - broken up
Buffy & Spike - Spike died and she "never loved him"
Willow & Tara - Tara died
Xander & Anya - broken up/ Anya died
Giles & Jenny - Jenny died
Angel & Cordy - Cordy died
Fred & Gunn - broken up
Fred & Wesley - Fred died

Then you have the death cases, which, though not to be expected in real life, are just part of a supernatual show. And it's not just like JW randomly killed people who were in relationships, no, Joyce died too, for example. So if you ask me, those don't really count as well as really 'broken up', as it's just something that couldn't be helped in the context.

With that in mind, there's Fred&Gunn Buffy&Riley left, and that's not too bad a quote for breakups, especially considering that both girls went into a new relationship.

And wasn't it even in teh Chosen commentary that JW said something along the lines of "I wanted one couple to make it, so why not Willow and Kennedy?". In that aspect I think JW just thought Willow really deserved to be the one left in a relationship and happy...I'm assuming this because of the alternative storyline where they wanted to bring Tara back with Buffy's wish.

^ While I agree with most of what Kristine said, I think Xander & Anya deserve to be there with Buffy & Riley and Gunn & Fred, after all Anya died after she and Xander were broken up.

While I'm on Xander & Anya, since it fits here:

The two of them were such a happy couple and so in love that their break-up felt so incredibly forced. It just feels like Whedon couldn't take having a couple in a happy, lasting relationship for a change. I still think they wasted a perfectly good plot with the new grounds and metaphors they could have explored with the newlyweds - just for drama's sake. True, Anya wouldn't have become a vengeance demon again but still. There would have been other possibilities for that.

Their break-up had absolutely no sense in-story. I mean, demon poses as Future!Xander and even though Xander finds out it was all a lie, he leaves Anya at the altar. No. Just no. I don't buy it.

Xander was a coward...and maybe that's true to why a lot of relationships don't work out.

I agree with that it is normal for high school relationships not to last. But I agree with Mumrick that the Xanya break-up felt forced.

Still is principal Woods ever mentioned again in season 8? I can't recall...

Erg... it's not letting me quote people! I guess I'll just do it myself then! (What an independent move, huh?)

I really wish they had brought Tara back. I don't even really like to consider Willow/Kennedy a real couple. That, if anything, seemed way forced.
 
Yeah, but bringing Tara back from the dead would have seemed really forced too, especially given how Buffy felt about being brought back to life the year before. The Scoobies, one would suspect, must have learned their lesson. Besides, I always felt like Willow didn't deserve Tara after season six.
 
Joss is truly evil when it comes to couple.

SPOILER:
My favourite couple of all time were Wesley and Fred and was overjoyed when they FINALLY got together but Joss killed Fred. I was gutted.

I haven't really read season 8, but were Buffy and Satsu really a couple? I thought they just slept together, end of story.
 
It's my least favorite aspect of Joss's writing/plotting.

Granted, it's unbelievable for all relationships to work out happily ever after.

But it's equally unbeliebavle for NO relationship to ever work out happily ever after.

Oddly enough, some pairings do last in the real world.
 
Well, its sort of normal for couples to break up. In real life, who really stays together forever? Joss is trying to be realistic. Also, happy endings are boring, agreed.
 
I understand that Joss wanted to make it look real. But I'd like to see longer term relationships on the show. They could have rocky path, fight sometimes, cheat on each other, but please don't break up. To me, that's already considered 'happy ending'.

My parents have been together for over thirty years. It may not be most couples but it's not uncommon at all either. I'd say Joss is trying to be dramatic, not realistic. But frankly, the idea that no couples stay together is as boring as every couple staying together. What makes you care about a couple if you know that Mr. Whedon is merely going to destroy it? I can't say I've given a crap about any of his ships since I figured out his way of handling relationships was always going to be the same.
