I'm not remotely new to the Buffyverse, and I use a lot of message boards, so how I managed to miss this one is beyond me.

I watched Buffy the day it aired. My identical twin sister told me it was on, and she told me it was called Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I said 'It's called what now?"

My parents were pretty religious and once they found out we were watching a show about demons and vampires, we had to get our sneak on. This was back in the days of VCRs and analog cable (phantasm, not fantasia!), but I digress.

I found it much later from my mom that it wasn't so much the demons as Sarah Michelle Gellar that made her want to keep us from watching Buffy. My mom was worried that we were gay and that we had a crush on Buffy. I explained to her that yes, we were gay, but no, we had a crush on Willow.

Last week I handed my thirteen year old brother the first disk of season 1, and he's been hooked since. He even wanted to watch "Once More With Feeling" twice.

I'm not ashamed to say that Buffy was a big part of my growing up. They say TV rots your brain. I'm a physics major and premed, so I'm scared to know what I would have been like if I hadn't watched Buffy.

I can totally relate to the sneakyness....there's been this incident...when I was 14 I was in Bulgaria, while the last few episodes of Buffy were airing for the first time in German TV. Every Wednesday they showed two episodes in the evening on a German channel we luckily got there, and pretty much all the German girls from the hotel were sitting there in the hotel lobby (no TV's in the rooms) watching Buffy. One time my parents walked by. I think it was the first time they really saw what Buffy was. And well, they ended up forbidding me to watch the show ever again. And that was exactly at that time when only 1 single episode was left to air!!! Well, back in Germany, I tried everything to watch that episode. But my parents were blocking the TV. Eventually they went to bad and I caught the last 5 minutes of the last episode...that was better than nothing. In the end I just read a lot of summaries of the episode online and then watched it again some years later when I had the DVDs. Luckily, these days my parents don't really care anymore about what I watch (not that they could stop me from anything).

And also, about the brain deading thing...I completely agree, with all the TV I've watched I would be mentally retarded by now, but hey, I can still write in English, which is not my native language, so I guess I'm all set.

haha my parents are not like that but they're always saying that i shouldn't spend so much time here in the boards XD so they tell me to wash the dishes or something like that.. and if do what they say.. then it's all ok 😉

I liked your little "Wrong girl" crush anecdote there 🙂. Buffy was a big part of my growing up too, and I have to agree that it educated me rather than....dumbing me down so-to-speak. This is NOT your typical TV program, hehe. Anyway, welcome to the boards!
