Numbers on Dawn's shirts

Ok, so here's something I'm wondering about.... It seems to me that toward the end of season 5 and for some time during season 6 Dawn is often shown wearing a shirt with a number. The number seems to vary - but the fact that she's nearly always wearing a shirt with a number on it seems to mean something to me....I just can't figure out what....

any ideas?

Maybe it's some sort of inside joke or something amongst the cast/crew? Anyone know if it was ever mentioned in the commentaries?

This reminds me that season 6 was the year of the numbers shirts. In almost every episode one or more characters wore a shirt with numbers on it, prompting eagle-eyed viewers to look for a mathematical or an episodic pattern that would lead to clues, spoilers, something of that ilk (these folks, of course, were the future viewers of Lost). I remember reading an interview with Joss Whedon or Marti Noxon during that time where they denied that there was any pattern to or significance behind the numbers shirts; the explanation was that numbers shirts were cool, and they were just keeping up with the times. The trouble was, numbers shirts were actually not especially cool at the time, so the conspiracy theory only grew. Was there a pattern to the numbers on the shirts, or were the fashion department just helplessly clueless as usual? I guess we’ll never know for sure, although I suspect the latter.

But I digress.

That's so funny, I was watching some of Season 6 with my bestie last night, and I also noticed how in "Bargaining" Xander, Willow, AND Dawn are wearing numbered shirts... I was wondering if it was supposed to mean something as well. 😛

Yea, I think it has a meaning too... Just not sure what... It's mostly Dawn who wore them, though.

One of the writers mentions it in a commentary somewhere... Possibly the Bargaining commentary? It's been a while since I listened. Anyway, I think they said it was just coincidence that so many number t-shirts were used.

I remember that in the commentary of Barganing, in the scene where they are in the kitchen and BuffyBOT makes sandwiches and Xander comes in saying "I am a man and I have my tool" or something like that, they comment on the number shirts and they say that it was a random thing 🙂

Yup, it's in the commentaries that the numbers on shirts mean nothing. They were talking about how a lot of the characters ended up with numbers on their shirts and fans thought they meant something and kept asking about it. Apparenlty the wardrobe department didn't notice it, either. 😛

I actually never noticed the number shirts til now.... Now I'll probably never be able to watch the show again without noticing them. LOL

It might just have been an attempt to give Dawn her own look, but from a costume and continuity point of view it's a nuisance if there wasn't anything deliberate to it.
