Obama announces Osama bin Laden killed by U.S.

Reporting from Washington and Los Angeles"” Osama bin Laden, the world's most wanted terrorist, was killed in Pakistan as the result of a U.S. military operation, President Obama announced to the nation Sunday night.

The historic revelation comes about four months before the 10th anniversary of the devastating Sept. 11 attacks on the United States, which were executed by the Al Qaeda network helmed by Bin Laden and prompted the start of a war on terror that has dominated U.S. foreign policy.

Bin Laden, 54, was a member of a wealthy Saudi family and has been on the FBI's Most Wanted Fugitives List since 1999.........

The U.S have just opened a can of sh*tstorm. Al-Qaeda will retaliate for this in one form or another. Anyway this is a joyous day to behold and the U.S is long deserving of it so ring the bells and celebrate.

My first thought was disbelief. My second thought was almost relief. My third was true patriotism. My fourth was closure. Now I'm kind of back at the patriotism with the closure mixed in. As well as the uncertainty of what's coming next. I'm concerned Bin Laden had a "if they kill me..." plan..

I am very conflicted about everything. Been watching Al Jazeera for the past two hours since it was announced that Obama was going to make an announcement (confusing, i know 😛) and to be honest, I don't know what to feel. Relieved, sad, solemn. God knows NYC deserves this closure.

Maybe this is because I've basically never really known a time where we (we as in the US) were not at war? Hm. I just don't know where we go from here. I'm not sure if it was worth it, but I guess that's not for me to decide. Obama's speech tonight was fantastic though.

"As we do, we must also reaffirm that the United States is not "“- and never will be -"“ at war with Islam. I've made clear, just as President Bush did shortly after 9/11, that our war is not against Islam. Bin Laden was not a Muslim leader; he was a mass murderer of Muslims."

I'm interested to know at what point if ever Pakistan came through with the intel that he was there. That point was a tad murky in the President's remarks.

This is a bittersweet day… It’s obviously a huge triumph for our military, and I couldn’t be prouder tonight of what my husband does for a living. Every member of our armed forces, no matter how small, has played a part in bringing justice to the victims of 9/11 and our country. For that, I am so very proud and so very grateful. But it’s also slightly terrifying because who knows what his people will do to retaliate against us. 🙁 That is the part that has me worried, and the only reason I am hesitating to jump for joy.

I don't feel bad for him as such but I'm not liking the whole situation. Going back years and years. Even before 9/11 (To me it means november 9th. Silly sidenote.) even if things accelerated after that. He's a leader but in no way am I sure that the world is safer now. If anything now he'll become a martyr right? And an eye for an eye policy usually never ends well.

America is great in some ways, not so good in others. What happened on 9/11 is nothing but a tragedy and no one deserves that. On the other hand, most if not all of us are seeing the western world perspective on things. That's not how all the world sees it. The "we're right, you're wrong and we're going to convince you by being stubborn and violent" argument is used by both sides (Not at all everyone, very far from it, no matter which side you're on.) is what's causing trouble. A tricky situation and to have a winner by strength and power doesn't sound 21st century to me.

I see it as more of a symbolic event. I don't think the world is necessarily safer either. Someone will undoubtedly replace Bin Laden and terrorism will still be used as a tool of war and oppression. (It probably always will be, just a matter of who's wielding it.)

The death/capture of this one man has been a primary objective of the US for almost a decade, and to be honest, when I was growing up, he always seemed like a boogeyman or something. So now he's gone, and I think it's time to question whether or not it was worth it. Re-thinking what led up to this in the first place, what it means to us now.

Wasn't he dead two years ago or something? We never heard of him in ages and most of those tapes they showed in the news were fake...

Either way, I feel nothing for his death, I hate him for killing so many innocents and ruining lives for so many Muslims who are now seen as terrorists and treated poorly in airports and other places.

I will never celebrate the death of a human being, no matter who it is. The sight of people celebrating it makes me feel sick, but I can understand why they would.

This is far from the end of it all though, there will no doubt be supporters who will want revenge and he wasn't the only bad guy out there in the first place. The repercussions of this will be interesting for us on both sides of the pond.
