Obama's Peace Prize

At worst, Obama is undeserving of this prize because he hasn't done enough. These two actually hindered peace in many ways. Arafat was connected with terrorist attacks and civilian deaths for years and years. Kissinger organized illegal bombings of Cambodia during the Vietnam War and helped establish dictatorships in Latin America.

The fact that these two each have one of these awards proves to me the utter redundancy of the award. It means sweet FA.
 
I'm an Obama supporter, but I don't think he should have won. He hasn't done anything that merits a Nobel Peace Prize.

Of course, every recipient of this award from the very first one to date has made that exact same statement. What was he supposed to say?

"I am very proud to accept this highly deserved award in recognition of my untiring efforts in the cause of promoting world peace and universal brotherhood...."

The man's a professional politician.
 
There are plenty more deserving candidates, but as has been pointed out... at least he's not a war criminal.

The best reasoning for this I've heard is that it's an attempt to keep his policy in check with what he's seen to represent. In the Middle East, for instance, it simply wouldn't do for a Nobel Peace Prize Winner to adopt hawkish military strategies.

It's odd, and I don't think it really does his reputation among his detractors as style-over-substance any favours.
 
Very very strange and sort of sad. Now he's got no chance to get the prixe for actually doing something.

Like my friend said though, is it even alright to give the nobel peace prize to an American president? Could that be interpreted as giving the prize to The US? (Which would of course be such a joke. I don't know if I agree with her that it does, but it's a scary thought.)

Yeah, it's ashame that people actually are sort of disappointed with him for receiving it. I work in a grocery store and that weekend, nearly everyone who bought a newspaper commented on the story, and sounded not too happy with Obama.

Which means he can't "win" in this situation, except for the prize itself. He didn't make the decision. I don't think he deserve it either but what do people expect him to do, refuse it? That would be like telling the people giving the award that they're idiots for making that decision. Which I'm sure some people think but not something that would be suiting for him to do don't you think?
 
I have no problem with his refusing an award he didn't deserve, hasn't done anything TO deserve, and shouldn't have gotten!
 
I think people are sanctifying the Nobel Peace Prize over, say, an Emmy, without reason. It is named after Alfred Nobel, the inventor of dynamite, who thought its immense destructive power would put an end to war (similar to later theories about the atom bomb and earlier ones about the crossbow.

Actually, Nobel developed dynamite as a safe alternative to nitroglycerin to be used in construction and mining. It was what he considered the misuse of his invention in warfare that caused him ti initiate the peace prize.
