Objects in Space vs. the Serenity movie

well neither, to be honest. There's no closure to "objects in space", of course, and I just don't like the feel of the movie at all, not to mention the whole thing with Book's death, which felt unnecessary, and Wash's, which was almost too Joss.

If I have to choose between having the movie or just leaving the series as is after a handful of episodes, I'll have the latter with a side order of the comics.
 
"Objects in Space". It is a mediocre episode but still a fairly watchable one, "Serenity" on the other hand sucks. In my opinion it's a ridiculous, poorly-plotted mess even when judged by the standards of a summer blockbuster movie. Worst of all, it's just obnoxiously derivative, the whole thing is basically Whedon rehashing his old crap for the nth time and corroding the setting and the characters in the process. What's the point? And what is this film anyway? A sequel to the series or a reboot, because it tries to be both and works as neither.

Well, I think Objects in Space is hardly an ending. Sure, it's the last episode, but it wasn't meant to be the last one. It actually starts something completely new. The crew is starting to accept River, and that, in my opinion, is the start of a completely new story arc.
Anyway, I love Serenity and, unlike Objects in Space, it is an actual ending to the show. So my vote goes to Serenity.
 
This is tough. Obviously, as others have said, "Objects in Space" isn't really an ending. However, and I know this isn't the popular opinion, "Serenity" really isn't that good of a movie. I know, I know, it's Joss and it's Firefly so people love it, but if you look at it critically, there's a lot wrong with it. The jump between the second and third act makes virtually no sense. As @Evil UU says, it tries to be both a reboot and a continuation, which muddles things up. Again as others have mentioned, the deaths of Wash and Book feel like Joss jumping up and down saying "it's MY movie", which almost distracts from the scenes that are meant to mean so much.

Don't get me wrong, it's not "bad", I do like "Serenity", but it could have been a LOT better, there are huge holes in it, and I feel like because Firefly got such an unfair ending and because it's Joss, people give it a pass. I hope there's more to the series some day, just to give it a real ending.

Serenity was epic and Objects in Space my favourite episode of the Firefly series. So... I'm not complaining.

'Objects in Space' as the last episode of Firefly kind of reminds me of 'Restless' as the last episode of Buffy season 4. It's kind of weird and making people go 'WTF?', but isn't that the point? 🙂

I would see Serenity more as a finale. I disagree with Rs, I had really high expectations and was waiting for that movie all year after watching Firefly. It completely met my expectations and then passed at a magnificent level. And, I'm really not one to always give Joss a pass, but I think that may be the best piece of all his pieces.
 
"Objects In Space" didn't end anything, and I never saw "Serenity" as giving closure to the series either. If anything, it opened up the possibility for a whole new series of movies, the same as the "Star Trek" franchise, maybe even evolving into a "Next Generation" spinoff with Captain River Tam and her own merry crew of lovable scoundrels and misfits. Sadly, "Serenity" didn't seem to have the numbers to make it all happen.

At least, not yet.
 
I don't consider either one an "ending." I thought "Objects in Space" worked very well as a conclusion to the weekly episodes and transition to the movie. Then we have the "Leaves on the Wind" comic picking up where the movie left off. And I still hope Serenity II is a possibility once Joss is out of Avengersland.

The way that I understand it at this moment, Robert Downey Jr and Joss pretty much have the acting and directing, respectively, tied up in the Marvel Studios section of Walt Disney. With the kind of money they're pulling in, and authority they exert, again, respectively, I wouldn't look to see Joss walk away from the Marvel franchise for as long as the superhero craze continues. At the very best, and even this is long odds, we might see him farming out some of his properties and only being Executive Producer.
 
Joss doesn't want to devote all the best years of his life to telling stories about other people's characters, though. He's pretty much indicated he's not directing any more Marvel movies. I could see him staying on in his consultant capacity, and he's mentioned he's interested in joining the writers' room for "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." But the money isn't the most important thing to him... especially now that he has plenty of it.

After Avengers 2 makes another gazillion dollars, Joss will have enough money and Hollywood influence to make any movie he wants, including Serenity II. The question will be whether that's his priority, or if he'd rather do something else instead. I think he wants to do Doctor Horrible 2 and move ahead with that web project he and Warren Ellis have been kicking around for years. And he's got a couple of old "lost projects" he might be interested in resurrecting, such as "Goners." He might even write some Buffy comics.
