This week Valjavertjinn has offered to lead a discussion group... Valjavertjinn will post the episodes to review, and the general topic for discussion here.

Jenny

Thank you, HisMrs. For my very first discussion ever, I, predictably, will be discussing Jenny.
Sure, she was a love interst for Giles, but she also meant a lot more to the Scoobies. Take Willow for example. At first, she was reluctant to let Jenny into the group ("Why is she in the club?"). But Jenny eventually becomes a sort of parental figure to her. Willow helps her out at school, is very concerned for her when she is posessed by a demon, and is heartbroken when she dies. Jenny seemed to have spent time with Willow, because Willow is able to identify the rose quartz (saying that Ms. Calendar had told her about it). And Jenny had a lot of influence on Willow. Willow was introduced to witchcraft through Jenny, and, as we all know, Willow becoming a witch had a BIG effect on the show.
What do you guys think of Jenny and her interactions with the Scoobies?
Review: Prophecy Girl, The Dark Age, I Only Have Eyes For You, Becoming.
P.S. I am personally of the opinion that Willow was posessed by some form of Jenny during Becoming Part 2 when she was re-ensouling Anglelus.

It would have been interesting to see what sort of effect Jenny would have had on Willow while she was struggling with her magic addiction. While Jenny certainly was immersed in witchcraft, it wasn't something we ever saw her become dependent on; she frequently relied on her computer and research skills. I think it would have been good for Willow to have someone around who set a good example of balance when it came to using witchcraft.

A great topic of discussion - I love a bit of Jenny!! My initial thoughts on Jenny were that she brought some comic relief into the show in terms of her banter with Giles in Season 1. She had some great lines, and Giles's reactions to her teasing are classic!! I know this isn’t in the episodes to review but I just love her conversations with Giles in I Robot, You Jane:

Giles: I'm, I'm just gonna stay and clean up a little. I'll, uh, I'll be back in the middle ages.
Jenny: Did you ever leave?

----------------------------------

Jenny: [to Giles] I know our ways are strange to you, but soon you will join us in the twentieth century, with three whole years to spare.
-----------------------------------------------

Jenny: Well, you really are an old-fashioned boy, aren't you?
Giles: Well, I-I don't dangle a corkscrew from my ear.
Jenny: That's not where I dangle it.
------------------------------------------------

These instances are just so funny and cute and are the seeds of their relationship. We get a side to Giles we never see before - the coy and slightly nervous side as he stammers and obviously has a great attraction towards her. I also think it is telling that Jenny is the first person outside of the core Scooby gang that Giles chats to about the supernatural starting from I Robot, You Jane and then Prophecy Girl. Throughout Season 2 we see Giles falling for her which I loved seeing - it is just a new aspect of the character which furthers our fondness for him. But her relationship with Giles also allows us to see how close Buffy is with him, how much love she has for him, as for example in Passion, when Buffy puts the hurt and betrayal she feels herself for Jenny to one side and tells her that she doesn’t want Giles to be lonely and that he misses her.

In fact Jenny was instrumental in different ways - she helped with the battle against evil; her abilities with computers enabled them to get rid of Moloch in I Robot, You Jane and she helped in the research about the apocalypse in Prophecy Girl. But in another way, her decision to hide her true self to the group contributed to Season's 2 arc- the Rise of Angelus. Mentioning the curse and its full nature earlier than she did may have prevented Angelus from arising. Even more integral is her ability to get the translation of the Ritual of Restoration, which Buffy and Willow find in her classroom, leading to Angel getting his soul back which makes Becoming Part II so utterly heartbreaking at its conclusion. If it wasn’t for Jenny, Angelus would never have become Angel again! So in terms of forming the plot, Jenny was pretty important!!!!!

It is interesting Valjavertjinn you say "Jenny eventually becomes a sort of parental figure to her" - I really agree. As we see more evidently in Gingerbread, Willow has got no relationship with her mother, so I can really see where you are coming from. Plus, on a lighter note, I love when she is so excited to sub for Jenny in Passion, but when she realises she can't she sighs, "Oh darn, she's here! Five hours of lesson planning yesterday down the drain!!" haaa But I noticed that at the end of Passion she decides to stick to Jenny's own plans when she has to take over the class after Jenny dies 🙁 it sooo sad!!!

There is so much to say about Jenny but I will leave it at that for now so others can contribute. I loved her, she herself was very funny at times, she truly loved Giles, ("I didn't know I was gonna' fall in love with you") and as a plot mechanism, moved the story along in different ways.

I hope it is okay I’ve mentioned Passion and I Robot, You Jane even though it wasn’t in the episodes to review list!!!

🙂

P.S I also need to mention this quote from Prophecy Girl, love how Jenny says it, "The part that gets me, though, is where Buffy is the Vampire Slayer. She's so little." haaa
