Official Discussion of "Loyalty" (WB-US)

What can I say about the eppy? I liked it, a lot.

The scene with Holtz and Wesley took my breath away. I learned more about Holtz there than ever before. Describing the casket, his families deaths...I shuddered thinking of the revenge that man is plotting. Wesley's offer to take Angel's place showed that he values Angel, and then Holtz's rebuttal, about how it wasn't Wes's hands that did that to his family. That, to me, shows how dedicated Holtz and his troop are. They will not be swayed just because he has a curse. I also really like the actor that plays Holtz. I think he does complete justice to everything this hunter stands for. He isn't the sexiest, or have the best body, but that doesn't matter. He gets everything across that needs to get across: from his eyes to his hands to his voice, every part of his body is working.

The woman who came into A.I. was also very well done. Angel showed raw emotion when describing what a vampire does, and if Connor was not there, then it would have been like a moment from before Angel got fluffy and lighthearted, something I miss seeing. Regardless, the entire deal with Aubrey was handled beautifully: the actress that played her, her excellent acting skills, the gangs reaction to her story, namely Angel and Wes, made it wonderful. And when she returned to Holtz, her description of what each person does was on target. "Yes, Boss" followed by a commercial break was classic.

I also enjoyed there not being any Cordy. Please don't shoot me, I love the actress and the character, but it was nice not to have the triangle to contend with. I think has really detracted from the content lately. And Groo is too surreal to deal with something as dire as Connor and everything surrounding him. The writers get a thumbs up for sending him away for an episode.

I am not too certain about Gunn and Fred, however. I loved the relationship last episode, but for some reason, I didn't enjoy it at all in this episode. I think a lot of that was sprung from this episode being so dark, and Fred being a very, for lack of a better term, light character. Gunn is a demon fighter, strong, and ready to open a can of whoop ass. He is spontaneous, and impulsive, to mention he has a wicked temper. Fred is the opposite of those things. She thinks things over, and is very well spoken. She comes from a very sheltered life in Texas, to living in Pylea and going kinda nutty. Whenever I look at the pair, the only thing I can see is Gunn sheltering Fred. I know this isn't so, but its what I see. Their characters clash, and I don't really like it. But we'll see what happens: I'm not writing them off just yet.

I think that Alexis Denisof delivered the performance of a series in that episode, exemplyfying everything that Wesley is. His actions, his attitude, and everything about him was well thought out. As the eppy progressed, I could see him getting more intent on figuring out his goal. His five o clock shadow got more pronounced, and his eyes more wary. I could almost see the bags under them. Nothing about the Watcher in this show was idiotic - ok, the hamburger scene was surreal - but Wesley put on no airs. When he saw Holtz, he stood up, and clearly and consicly got the job done. This is the real Wes that I miss seeing. Looks like even he has a Ripper.

The hamburger scene was absurd, but Alexis played it wonderfully. I at first thought that the episode was going to Hell in a Handbasket, but Wes managed to make it seem semi - realisitc and in character to the show. 🙂 Had to mention the handbasket.

The ending made me scream: that was too much of a cliffhanger and the jovial tone he used offset the conclusions Wes was reaching horribly. It was a very dramatic scene, and I think it was done poorly. This is just MHO, however.

In closing (finally!) I can say this: next week's episode is one to look forward to. It looks as promising as this week!
 
I actually missed not seeing Cordelia in this episode. Although, it was still pretty good. I have to agree that the whole hamburber bit was stupid! They should've made the connection at a more sacred or elaborate place than a freakin' drive-thru!

What was up with the talking hamburger? I think they just put that in for comic relief since this episode took a serious turn. Holtz is really getting close to Wesley. Is his goal really to save Angel's son? I think that it is really a cover just to kill Angel. I feel sorry for Wes in the coming episodes. He really has a tough choice in taking Conner. I just hope that Angel doesn't try to kill him. 🙁

I can't wait to see next week. What I saw seemed interesting though.
 
This was now officially my favorite episode ever. Being the huge Wesley fan that I am, that was basically all I cared about. It was a Wesley ep. I think I said "Go Wes" an almost-record of about ten times. And when he showed up at Holtz's, I was actually scared for his safety. Of course, Wesley can care for himself, but still....

And I admit, I actually MISSED Cordelia. It might have been her missingsmart comments, or the fact that there was a lack of characters, but something was just missing.

The Fred/Gunn thing going on....grrrrrr.... I really didn't like it in Waiting In The Wings, but it was kinda cute in Couplet. All of a sudden, It's old news. Maybe there was too much Wes and not enough of anyone else.

The Hamburger thing.... I found that so funny!! Maybe it was just because wesley looked so funny talking to it...I'm not exactly sure.

All in all, it was a great Eppy. I can't wait till next week!!!!
 
the talking hamburger scene was hilarious. alexis did an amazing job as wesley in the episode---i mean, it was portraying him as someone trying to balance his emotions with what he has to do and after his little talk with the talking hamburger, why do i have a feeling that wesley might be a tragic character?
