Oh THAT show...

Once or twice {Ok, almost everyday...} in my lifetime, I've been made fun of for watching "That show.", "That stupid show", "That gay-ass show", or "That crap you call TV", known to us as BTVS. Sometimes I don't stand up for it, and people walk all over MY SHOW...callling it names. If I do speak up, saying it is actually a really good show, people walk all over me, calling me names. *sigh* of course, no one stand up for me. lol There are those few who do watch the show, but they're in the closet. And then there are those who aren;t ashamed, yet talk about it 24/7 nonstop, which makes you wonder WHY they get made fun of....{since you can't hear the intonation in my voice, that was sarcasm.}

Have you ever denied or not spoken up about watching Buffy, or even some other movie you've seen an liked? Have you ever felt ashamed for what you watch? And no, I'm not talking about you not spreading the word about watching porn. {I actually have a friend who does have no shame in telling others that he watches porn everyday. Not that it's bad, jus that he tells EVERYONE.}

I've watched movies that I've liked, then bashed them along with everyone else. It's mob mentality, or just shame. But one movie I will and will always stand up for is,

GIGLI! One of the bestest films ever, except, of course, that J-Lo is in it.

Well, I almost always defend BtVS. But since everyone knows how obsessed I am, they say bad things about the show just to make me mad so they can laugh at me.. And then I just try to shut my mouth (although it's hard)...

Meh, I came to terms with my nerdy identity a long time ago. I'm a Buffy fan and proud. If they hassle ya, just tell em that they have no right to judge it if they haven't watched it. Most people base their opinion about it on Bloody Hateful Charmed or Xena. I don't witter on about it all day, but I'll own up if somebody brings it up.

Oh hang on. I absolutely love the Charlies Angel's movies, but I keep that to myself.

Most people's eyes start rolling like an Atlantic City slot machine when I mention the words 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer'. This a bad move, for I will try to convert them. ::evil::

Most people that bash the show have either (a) seen the movie and think it is more of the same or (b) never watched the show and base their opinion on the title. Is it a silly title? Of course it is, I don't anyone here would argue that. But that is part of Buffy's subversive charm. It takes all the things you expect from a horror show/movie and turns them on their head, as was Joss Whedon's intension from the start. And the show does it with wit, charm, a healthy helping of intestinal fortitude and some of the best writing ever seen on TV.

Anyone slams you for liking the show, challenge them to a bet; watch a few episodes and if they still don't like it, buy them lunch or something. Pick the best episodes to show them and you will have a convert on your hands.

A friend and I converted my former housemate. She always spoke of the show with the usual disdain of the unenlightened. By the time the show ended, she was a fan (although the numerous shots of James Masters with his shirt off might have had something to do with that).

I get attacked all the time by my friends and family for watching Buffy. Mostly it's because of the movie, but in some cases, the silly title.

My 20 year old sister was always one of my biggest critics about Buffy...constantly mocking me for watching...until last week when my DVD player in my room was acting up and I decided to watch a couple of episodes in the family room. She was passing by during one of the eppies and just stopped what she was doing and started watching and asking questions...before we knew it, we finished the entire Season that night (from the middle-ish, not the beginning) and she was hooked...Unfortunately for you Bangels...I think I created a Spuffy shipper, but she doesn't know the wonder that is Cangel yet 🙂

Also, I had a long lengthy discussion with the fact that Buffy is intelligent television with my mother and discussed with her the fact that it's actually taught on college campuses and actually has lessons to be learned...more than some of her shows can say for themselves...now maybe she was just agreeing with me to make me happy, but you never know...

I also watch Survivor almost religiously and my boyfriend teases me for that. My mom, sister, Aunt & I have Survivor nights and cook dinner and bring snacks. it's always fun.

Well, I agree that everyone think BtVS is a joke (I've never met one single person in real life who doesn't think so). And first I thought that was cause they hadn't seen the show, but that's not it. The thing is I hated BtVS before I Really started watching, and gave it a real chance. Some people just tells me "Johanna don't you get that Buffy isn't serious?!".. But some people actually have seen lots of episodes and still say things like "the vampires are stupid", "it's fun but..", "the actors are so bad" and so on. But if you watch five episodes each season and don't really care about the show/character/stories/dialogues, of course you're not gonna like it. I find that everyone who gives it a chance loves it. But the rest of them can still watch they show, without getting it, without understanding the thing with BtVS... And man I feel sorry for them, and I try teeling them how to think while watching the show (might not be a great idea, heh)... but they just don't seem that interested in hearing what I've got to say, lol.
Another thing, when I try to convince people, they seem to understand me, they say they do and believe the show is esrious and all, but the next day they're making fun of me again, what's that all about..? Hehe.

Very much agree. When I want to get someone hooked on BtVS I wan to show them something from the later seasons (season 3 perhaps, or a serious episode like The Body) but then I have to explain every little thing about every character and relationship in the show... Which never works, but I don't wanna show them the first season, I don't think it's that good. For me the first season is more about looking back and understanding where the characters came from, what happened before, I don't even really think of the first two seasons like a real part of the show (just the "looking back"-part of the show, ehh).

This thread has gone off in an unintended direction, I think, but an interesting one nevertheless.

I work in a manufacturing plant, with a large number (14) of skilled tradesmen; millwrights, pipefitter/plumbers and other electricians are in my zone. I get to surf the net at work, and many times I've been observed to be on this particular site. I get merciless ribbing...but the guys watch Buffy when it's on the tv in the break room anyway. They say it's because the girls are hot, but I know at least a couple of them are now hooked. The first one to actually admit to it had just watched the "Smile Time" ep of Angel, and had laughed pretty much through the whole thing. So, in a testosterone-filled environment, Buffy is finally making inroads...unless the Simpsons are on...no one misses the Simpsons...

I've never denied watching Buffy and Angel, because i'm not ashamed of it and its part of who I am. I like to argue, and i'm pretty good at it so if anyone wants to take me on about it they can try but they never win. Instead of getting all insulty I simply state the reasons why I love it so much, the intelligence, the characters, the writing, the fan base.

I did get my mum hooked on it, she's a big Lindsey and Spike fan.

The only think I tend to shy away from saying I watch is Sunset Beach. I know its over the top and just plain mad but I can't stop myself from watching the repeats.

Yeah, me and a friend had a bit of time to kill so I put on OMWF (I always said he was like a musical) and he enjoyed it but I had to explain everything, "Spike loves Buffy but Buffy doesn't want to love Spike but she kind of does but it could be because she died and was bought back because her friends thought she was in a hell dimension because Angel went to a hell dimension because Buffy killed him because Angel went evil because he and Buffy slept together" well okay it wasn't that long but you get the idea.

I don't exactly shout it from the roof tops but I'm not Mr. tellnobody. Some of my closest friends know I like Buffy, my best friend says she has the soundtrack but has never watched the show (which I may make her one day). My media coursework is about Buffy and at some point we've all told each other what we're doing so they all know (oh and we've watched Buffy clips in Media, if they paid attention they may have noticed how happy I was). At work, I have been caught gazing at Buffy and Angel box sets and was waiting for us to get the Xander Character DVD in so I can say "I met him!" but alas we never had it in.
