Oh, and my last chapter is almost finished.....so keep your pants on......
Old Master and I are still working on the final chapter of the PROLOGUE.
The newest chapter is almost done, so please bear with us just a little while longer. Old Master was supposed to post it last Sunday, but decided at the last minute that the chapter needed more work, and started re-doing it. The man is clearly insane.
I have bumped these first chapters back up to the first page so that when the new chapter finally IS posted, newcomers to the BB Battles won't have to go searching for them.

Little Eleyna sits up with a start at the strange sound.
For just the barest instant there was........something...........
She raises herself up onto her knees quickly.....balling up her tiny hands into fists and rubbing at her eyes, still blurred from her forced sleep. She straightens her body to be better able to see over her sister and cranes her neck. She rubs at one eye again briefly and then opens them wide for better clarity, and then she peers down the length of road as far as she can see, looking and listening for any signs of movement.
She turns her head slowly, looking all around her now in the semi-darkness of the windblown street.....trying to lock her eyes onto anything unusual...all the while holding tightly onto her unconscious sister's hand.
The odd dead leaf or sliver of paper blows by, and an empty can could be heard rolling across the pavement somewhere...but nothing more.
Little Eleyna turns her attention back to Polexia and bends to her ear.....shaking her sister gently and urgently whispering entreaties for her to wake up.
As she does this, all the streetlamps in the vicinity abruptly begin to flicker and make noise......a low electrical buzzing not unlike the sound made by insects flying into a bug zapper. The flashing quickens in pace.....throwing it's weird intermittent orange glow over everything like an ersatz lightning.
A barely audible whimper escapes from Eleyna's throat, and she presses herself tightly against her sister. The rapid strobing effect of the lights is less than bearable, making her dizzy.
From the corner of her eye she thinks she sees a large dark shape skitter across, parallel to her position.
She let's out a yelp and turns her head sharply in that direction........nothing.
Little Eleyna looks around again urgently in spite of the ever-increasing strobing and noise, becoming more and more fearful. She looks over her sister's unconscious body and down the length of road, and again she thinks she can make out an image in between the flashes.....a dark and shiny shape near the end of the block.....there but for a split instant and then gone.
Her eyes well with tears as she tries to spy the strange image again....darting her eyes back and forth and all around. Terrified and swooning now from the lights, she begins to shake her sister again, yelling her name above the din. Impossibly, the flashing and noise increase in their intensity, and she is unable to take anymore as she shuts her eyes and clamps her hands down hard against her ears.
In desperation, she yells her sister's name over and over.....................................................
Nothing.
There is nothing.
As abruptly as it began.....the lightshow and noise cease.......as suddenly and as swiftly as the flick of a wall switch can illuminate or darken a room.
In fact, it seemed that everything had stopped......even the breeze. The only sound to be heard was the low, moaning thunder of the blood red, living sky.
Eleyna lies on her side huddled against her sister, trembling and sobbing fitfully........unwilling to open her eyes and take her hands away from her ears...afraid that the madness will start up again if she let's her guard down......afraid that there might be some terrible, nightmarish monstrosity standing there patiently only inches away, ready to snatch her up if only she would but opens her eyes.
For long moments she lays there.....trying not to move a muscle but finding it difficult due to the hitching of her chest from her crying.
But the closeness and warmth of her big sister, the rise and fall of her chest against Eleyna's back, offers a small comfort, and slowly her sobbing subsides.
She remembers that they have to be at the church, to see someone....the church, where it's safe..........
Her fear is supplanted by a sudden and urgent determination to wake her sister up and get out of here....off the scary streets, where the bad things are.......
She raises herself up and opens her eyes onto total pitch darkness. She yelps.....clutching her sister immediately. All of the streetlamps everywhere are out. She couldn't see a thing, not even her sister who is right there. She begins to speak to her sister again, her voice a tiny squeak at first due to the dryness in her throat.....but regaining it's timbre after a couple of tries. Eleyna shakes her more vigorously now, her eyes getting used to the darkness now......being able now to make out the familiar shapes of the street......the area taking on a deep, reddish hue from the glow of the roiling sky above.
To Eleyna's relief, Polexia issues a low groan and stirs, but ever so slightly.
"Hi Lexi! Wakey now.....we have to go......wakey......come on.....don't go back to sleep....,"she says excitedly into her ear.
".......Lexi, come ooon.......I'm scared Lexi.........."
At that moment, about twenty-five feet away, a single streetlamp turns on.
The sudden presence of light causes Eleyna to squint and quickly shade her eyes, expecting a repeat of the previous lightshow. It takes but a few moments for her eyes to adjust. She tentatively lowers her hand after a bit, looks across to the streetlamp and is startled to see a diminutive figure standing underneath.
The lamp's single beam shines down through the reddish murk onto the still figure like the spotlight from a stage production.
Still clutching her sister, who has fallen still again, Eleyna stares for long moments at the tiny, motionless form...the light from the lamp partially shadowing the facial features. Eleyna isn't sure......but it looks to her to be another child.....
