Who are you barracking for?

I've been following Shane Rose (equestrian) since the mankini incident, and then his accident. If this bloke makes the team, I will be absolutely cheering him on from home. What a champion.

Shane Rose is adamant he can win the Olympic gold that has eluded him during his equestrian career.

Rose already has two silver medals and one bronze from Games appearances in Beijing 2008, Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020.

And in February at an event in New Zealand, he secured the full qualifications he needed to be considered for the Australia's Paris team.

But on March 11, disaster struck.

Rose was seriously injured during a fall at a training camp.

He has no memory of the accident but has been shown a video his family filmed when he was taken to the hospital.

"I saw some footage — my wife must have filmed me — where I was like 'What happened, who was I riding, how did it happen, what's the date, how long have I got'?" Rose told 7.30.

He had suffered multiple left-side rib fractures, right elbow fractures, a fracture of the femur (requiring a rod) and fractures of the front and back of the pelvis and sacrum.

Rose and his medical team believe the 625kg horse landed on him in the fall.

I pretty much only care about basketball and the fight sports (boxing, Judo, Taekwondo, freestyle wrestling, Greco-Roman wrestling).

Hopefully that Dutch guy who raped a 12 year old girl gets beaten to death on his way to his first event. That'd be swell.

Cool! Are they sports you've played or just ones you find great to watch? What team are you going for in the Basketball? Is there any particular athlete you like specifically in the fight genre? I know nothing of wrestling but Judo is fun.

I played basketball as a young kid but I was much better at other sports (American football, baseball, shot put, discus, 400M) so I stuck with those through high school. I'm in my 30s now so those days are long gone, but it was fun while it lasted. I'm not a particularly nationalistic person but I root for Team USA, having been born and raised here. I'll also be pulling for Serbia in basketball as they have Nikola Jokic, who is the best player for my hometown Denver Nuggets (and the current reigning Most Valuable Player in the NBA; the best player in the world).

I follow professional boxing religiously but it's mostly amateurs at the Olympics, so I just wait for the tournament to start to pick a favorite. And the same for the other combat sports. There isn't really any professional tour or circuit for the other Olympic combat sports but I also follow professional bare knuckle boxing, kickboxing, and mixed martial arts.

I have done some Judo in my time but I let my membership lapse and haven't renewed it. When I change jobs I'll probably sign back up but my Dojo is not in a convenient part of town with where I work. Judo and wrestling are very similar, so if you participate in or watch Judo you already know a lot about wrestling. In Freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling the goal is to pin your opponent's shoulders to the mat for an instant win (the equivalent of a successful throw or submission in Judo) or score points by exposing their shoulders to the mat, rolling them over, or pushing them out of the ring. The only difference is that Freestyle wrestling allows you to grab the legs to initiate a takedown or control your opponent while Greco-Roman only allows you to grab your opponent above the waist.

If you practice Judo without a Gi (like in a tank top or wrestling singlet), you'll find that it ends up looking about 95% the same as a Greco-Roman wrestling match.

Oof not off to a good start. The Aussie team has faced some violence. All of the press that I have seen so far has been negative.

Shane Rose made the team though, which is a heroic feat despite where they place, but I hope the equestrians can make gold happen for him.

We're doing a little sweepstakes thing, my countries are Denmark and Vietnam.

I don't really follow the Olympics much, but I hope they can be peaceful after the arson attacks. Athletes work so hard to get there, and then all these politics and external factors interfere. The whole point of them is to bring people together!

What's everyone's thoughts about the opening ceremony. It seems like everyone loved Celine Dion, but the rest has mixed reactions.

Modern Penthalon.
I always wanted to do this. I used to cheer on my friends who did it through pony club, but I dont have the body type to run.

Very interesting to have athletes on floats down the river, it felt a bit like a Christmas parade to me. I hope they all pulled up ok after a night in the rain. It did seem made for tv rather than made for the crowd that was there.

I didnt see much of the main acts, just snippets on tv and outrage on twitter but I didnt think it was that outrageous. France and the French have always been weird, it seemed fitting lol. Nice to see a fatty front and centre #represent! Lol

Watched the womens synchronized diving, we just missed out on a medal there. The womans Rowing heat was a total disappointment, it didnt even look like the aussie team were trying! Dead last, I think they get another go. I wondered if it was strategic.

Mens surfing was lovely to watch, stunning location, Tahiti I think? Magical place 😉

Womens waterpolo China vs Aust was great! Very close, Aust won. On to the next round.

Mens gymnastics rings was terrible coverage, but then I realized they have multiple streams and my stream was only showing rings warms ups.

Beach vollyball on now Italy vs Spain. I do wish they'd let them wear more, but at least its not raining.

Missed Shane Roses dressage live but saw the rest of the team, and watched every country. Record broken by the British team, lovely test to watch. Had a brilliant night last night watching it. The live streams are excellent and I wish we had access to it like this in previous years!

Waiting for Shane Roses cross country run, it will be on soon. So very excited! This dude deserves it, he worked so bloody hard. Cant wait to see his kids at the Olympics at the future, what a work ethic!

Yeah, made for a TV audience, and just weird, is a good description of the opening ceremony. Like, short films about interracial gay hookups between clowns in a library?

I'm also not a fan of the American celebrity culture. I'm sure the hosts are nice people, but having commentators from the News department would have been more useful. Musicians with a new album to promote tend to overshadow the rest of the participants. And I guess you get what you paid for with Lady Gaga, I mean, we want a weird performance art piece that smells French. I guess it's fulfilled?

In case anyone was wondering how much better Nikola Jokic is at basketball than anybody else on planet earth:

Not a huge fan of the Olympics anymore, but my wife was watching this game. Dwayen Wade spent a lot of the first half making bad pronoun jokes. I suspect someone spoke to him at halftime because he didn't make another one in the second half.

I didn't catch Wade's commentary but his daughter is trans and he was probably making fun of people who were upset about whatever the hell was going on in that opening ceremony.

I blame the network. You need a commentator who is an expert in French culture, who can educate the audience about the context in which the performance is taking place. We didn't really get that. Anger is a side effect of confusion.

France has not been dealt any favours by the Olympics, folk being attacked in the streets, the South Korean Olympic team being named the North Korean's at the opening ceremony then the very bad conditions in the Olympic teams living quarters - what with cardboard beds and the low quality food for the athletes.

How to cut the costs of a country holding the Olympic Games, cut out some of the dumbass 'sports' .
