OMWF-Xander summoning the demon...

Does anyone else find that very unlikely? He seems to be hating the singing all through the episoe, and when he realised people were dying, why didn't he say anything? He didn't seem to feel any kind of guilt at all.
Me and my friend think that he was covering for Dawn. In the scene where Tara and Dawn are talking, Dawn asks "Do they know who summoned it?" and she looks really guilty when she asks that.
Xander had been a scooby for too long, and he knew too well that summoning a demon, in Buffy's words, "doesn't lead to hugs and puppies"...And his explanation for why is pretty lame to. And also the fact that everyone seemed to forget about it, makes me think that everyone understood he was lying, so they let it go.
What do others think?
 
I actuly thought it was Dawn the whole time till he confessed, after that I never gave it a second thought... am I too trusting?
 
Maybe.
Xander makes mistakes, but he knows that summoning a demon brings no good. And he showed no sign of regret or guilt when Giles said people were burning up. Xander isn't that selfish! He is so unselfish, that he would confess to have done something so Dawn wouldn't get into trouble...Or maybe it wasn't Dawn either, but Xander thought it was, and confessed. Then there's the question, who did summon him? Maybe Willow did a spell, and summoned him without knowing? or maybe someone we don't know summoned him, and left the talisman in the shop, cos they didn't wonna be his bride?
 
Maybe he didn't know the demon was going to be summoned, just the singing and dancing. What he maybe disliked about the singing was the openess of it, was worried he would sing something he didn't want to.
 
I think that we were definitely led to believe that it was Dawn that summoned the demon. However I do think that it was Xander who summoned it. Like AshSan stated, in the end of the episode Xander says he thought that there would just be singing and dancing. He was trying to make everyone happy again, trying to make things like they used to be, especially with Buffy. That is what the greatest irony of the whole thing is. One of the themes in the episode is that the "road to hell, is paved with good intentions." Xander was trying to make everyone happy again, but in the end it turned out much worse.
 
I agree. The scoobies have done plenty of spells over the years, including the spellto bring Buffy back, which would have been far more dangerous than a little singing, right?

Of course, he may have been hoping that the burning up was coming from something else, not the singing, and then when they found out it was a demon, he probably rationalized it away as a coincidence. He did look pretty chagrined when he admitted it was he who had summoned Sweet.
 
I also think that at that point in Season 6, they still had yet to see Magick's darker side. Up til then, they've used magick for things that have benefitted them. Not until the end of Season 6 do we really see Magick's darker face. Buffy and Xander also didn't see really what Magick was doing to Willow until she had gotten herself into the deep of it. Tara and Giles were really the only ones who saw the potential evil in magick at this point. IMO.
 
I still don't think it could be him who did it. He's reason for doing it was pretty lame aswell. Like they just threw it in cos they were running out of time and had to get the demon defeated somehow. It's a great episode, but that part bugs me. The way Xander is acting through the whole episode doesn't seem like someone who is guilty. Maybe they were planning on it being Dawn, but suddenly realised they had too many scenes or something, and had to find another solution. I just can't believe Xander did it...
 
I don't think he knew that a demon would come off it. I love Xander, but look at him. He can overlook somethings.
 
I think you were supposed to believe it was Dawn througout the whole episode, but at the end realize it wasn't. After I saw that I never really gave it a second thought and just always believed it was Xander.

If you watch it again though...and purposely look for things Xander does...he does do a few things here and there that make it seem it WAS him who summoned the demon. Such as when he says "Merciful Zeus" or whatever it is he says there...it does seem like he's a bit guilty, like he didn't expect it to actually work, but he realizes it did. There's a few other things I noticed, but that's just one example.
 
The hinting at another charcater is just one of those cute things storytellers do to make it less boring. Xander did it. Sorry that he caused the death of a few random people by summoning the demon but hey we got lots of fun singing and dancing in return.

Also if you'll remember when Giles told him about about the person combusting he did ask him "are you sure they two are related" which may point to him showing worry over what he had done. Of course he wasn't going to reaveal until the end because its' a television show that wants to save the best for last.

I don't think it was Dawn or anyone else. Xanders your man allright. He did a vewy bad thing and He's sowwy. He nearly got made a demon's bride and he'll never do it again...unless Joss gets really hard up for money and we see "Once more with feeling....again".
 
I'm just thinking that Sweet wouldn't just take Xander's word for it that he had summoned Sweet. There has to be some kind of "IP address" for spells, doesn't there, so the demon would know who summoned it? Seems logical, in a balance the scales kinda way...Sweet didn't put up any disagreement when Xander 'fessed up, so he must have known it was the truth...
 
Hm. You know, when I first saw the episode, I had no problem believing that Xander did it. But then, after several viewings, I really began to doubt it. I mean, it just doesn't fit the storyline or much of anything for Xander to summon the demon.

Still, I guess the explanation given for it is plausible, if a bit shaky. For a great episode, it was just sort of a sloppy finish.

Ah well. It's still an amazing episode.

Why is when I try to say something, someone comes along and says it much better?
I didn't have any doubts about it at first either, but after seeing it a few more times I started thinking it was really weird. I kinda think that they meant for it to be Dawn, but realised the way they had planned it to end didn't work or was too long, so they made it to be Xander, so it could end quickly. Cos it was a really sloppy way to end it...
And of course, i love the episode to, it's just that part that started to bug me!

Don't worry, it happens to me all the time, it's not just you! I think I'm being clever, and someone cuts right to the chase, and in 10 words or less! Aaaauuugh!
 
Well, all the diferent songs really made it long, even with a sloppy ending it went over. If I had to choose between Xander and Any dancing on the table and an air-tight ending (that people would still probably pick apart) I'd SO pick table dancing.

Well, yeah. That's true, I prefer the songs myself. it just started bugging me!
