On Emotion - My Personal Issue With Wolves At the Gate

Something I've noticed is that a lot of places, there's a lot of controversy about Buffy sleeping with a woman. I have my own opinions on the reasoning behind that, but that's not what this is for. This is for asking the following:

Does anyone else think it's kind of irresponsible and generally bitchy for Buffy to take advantage of someone who she knows has genuine feelings for her with no intention of even reciprocating the possibility of emotional involvement?

Just getting on my nerves personally.

And first post ever here, new to the site, so if something up there is mindblowingly wrong, don't be too harsh please.

I don't know if "bitchy" is the exact word I would have picked, but irresponsible certainly applies, or possibly even downright stupid. To be completely accurate, we really don't know who initiated the episode, but Buffy most certainly should have been the one to stop it. Exactly what the consequences of that momentary indiscretion will be remains at this time a mystery, but that there will be consequences is almost certain.

THAT, i think, is what bothered me the most about her sleeping with her. I mean, granted i also feel like buffy sleeping with another woman is a little out of character to me. That's just me. But yes, the fact that she took advantage of her, and while still laying there in bed after tells her that it would lead to nothing...yikes. I got annoyed too. After all the times Buffy have been burned you'd think she'd have more compassion and not do something like that. Unless there was some greater reason for it that we don't know about, but i doubt it.

Thank you, as you kind of brought another issue I have with it to light. The argument keeps being that it was a "natural progression of her character," but it just doesn't seem like that to me. Willow, yes. They eased it in, brought out the complexity, made it very real, foreshadowed it, and did everything that would make it lifelike. Buffy, it seemed to just be "Hey, girlsex!" and nothing else.

A bit off topic, but it's another one of my issues.

I think it had more to do with solace. Buffy is extremely lonely and isolated. It was wrong, but not unbelievable.

Honestly? I don't see the problem. Buffy doesn't feel emotionally invested enough in Satsu to proclaim her love for her or to maintain a relationship with her, as of yet anyway.

But to surrender herself to Satsu, especially for the first time with another woman was a powerful declaration all the same that Buffy does care for Satsu.

While Satsu doesn't necessarily have exactly what she wants, Buffy's love, she at least has a part of it, and that can't be so awful for her. Buffy didn't use Satsu, it seems apparent that Satsu was aware of enough for it to be a mutual agreement. I'm all on Buffy's side here.

It honestly just felt like a cop out is all. Like the writers ran out of ideas and threw it in to stir the pot.

People in love let the people they love do almost anything to them. Look at Spike. Is that what this is going to be, though? An emotionally abusive relationship where Buffy uses someone whenever she wants a release, then detaches from them elsewhere while they suffer? It just seems like we've been down this road before and making the abused party a girl doesn't make the scenery all that different. Plus, the whole "I'm not gay" thing seems way too much like the argument that a man who has sex with a man isn't gay unless he's taking. Which is ... well, it's illogical.

Just as long as Buffy doesn't put on fifty pounds, skin-cut her hair, pierce her nose and put on a red Mackinaw I'm OK with it. 😉

As for Satsu. She knew what she was getting into. She was an active enough participant that she thinks she was the one taking advantage of Buffy. Sorry no pity there.

I'm going to have to disagree with this I think. While I do think it is out of character for Buffy to sleep with someone in her charge I don't think there was anything 'Bitchy' or mean about the situation. Buffy didn't give Satsu any kind of definite answer but Satsu really didn't look for one. She asked her to stay the rest of the night with her, told Satsu that she would think about their night together and smile. She didn't make ANY promises, she didn't say it was absolutley a once off nor did she say they would become a thing. It was exactly what it was supposed to be. Two consenting adults enjoying eachother. Satsu knew this and was happy to proceed knowing her heart could be broken. I actually though Buffy was pretty sweet during the whole scene.

This wasn't Spike, it was NOTHING in the realm of Spike.

To be honest, its really not a big surprise that women are more likely to try other women, than men are likely to try other men. Its just a difference between the sexes.

I dont' know about the out of character aspect, because who am I to say something is out of character, afterall I didn't create Buffy, Joss did and Joss is the one that came up with the whole Buffy sleeping with Satsu so we can't say it's "out of character." One could say Buffy robbing a bank was out of character, but apparently she did it. Buffy used to go on and on about how wrong it is to kill a human and even wouldn't sacrifice Dawn cause she didn't want to kill her, however now it doesn't bother her after all she's been through now she'll do what she has to do to protect the world even if it means killing. So I mean again as Buffy grows and ages aspects of her personality changes. I mean there are A LOT of people in the world that experiment with the opposite sex sometime in their lives. And Buffy happened to be one of them. Remember she's not done baking and she's only 24, so she's still coming into her own and we're still discovering things about her.

So I dont' have a problem with anything that's happened in Season 8, whether it's Satsu, her robbing the bank, etc. Only thing I do have a problem with is the Buffy feeling so lonely factor. I thought that was wrapped up after she shared her power. But I guess not.

I definitely think that Buffy was taking advantage of Satsu. She knew that Satsu loved her, and she was just curious or, in her words, was having a "long year," so she decided to make Satsu think that she had a chance with her. Then, in issue 13, Buffy was totally indifferent, and even a little mean, to Satsu. I know that, if I was Satsu, I'd be hurt.

And to the people saying that Buffy sleeping with Satsu was out of character, it's really only as out of character as Buffy sleeping with Parker.

I hope that Buffy and Satsu don't have a relationship though. Woz is a bad enough abbreviation, if I have to say Buffsu I'm going to kill myself.
