One chosen one?

I myself like the idea of one chosen one, one Slayer. Okay, two at the same time is fine. But making all the potential girls in the world active Slayer is what we ended up with in the ending of the tv series. I'm ignoring right now what's after that period, ignoring the comics and what happens there, because I want to know only about the first feeling you felt when you found out that there will be thousands of Slayers around the world. Did you like that idea? Do you think it ruined a little the meaning of "Chosen one"? Would you prefer keeping it the way it was where there's only one Slayer in each generation?

My initial thought, and it hasn't changed much over the following years, was that Buffy's "Now, you get to choose..." speech would have worked fine IF ALL OF THE REMAINING POTENTIALS IN THE WORLD HAD BEEN PRESENT. And even at that, I think that it would have been a bit more realistic if one or two of the girls there had declined the calling. We were told throughout the season that "the remaining Potentials" were coming to Sunnydale, and that there were "only a few" surviving to get there in the first place. Then we suddenly see girls all over the world receiving their Calling along with the girls there with Buffy. Granted, given the world's total population, a few thousand girls is a miniscule amount, but still, in my opinion, way too many. Remember, the Shadow Men originally created the Slayer to protect their immediate surroundings, not the entire world, and they never envisioned a need for so many girls. In fact, it would have almost certainly been there intention that there NOT ever be more than a single Slayer and a handful of Potentials. To me, it would have been more believable if the actual number of Potentials in the world had been limited to something like 50 per generation, which would have made the few survivors in Sunnydale the entire population of Potentials for that particular generation. Ending up with a Slayer population numbering in the thousands was just wat too many.

I've never read the comics either. For me it ended when the series on TV stopped. Sometimes I hear things from others (which I don't mind) and then I think "Whà¡t??? Is thà¡t what happend to Buffy and the others?"

I like the idea of one Slayer. Indeed one "Chosen One!" So yeah, I sort of agree with you. 🙂

I more or less agree with White Avenger, but I think that it would have been better to limit it to a very few who would actually be able to make an informed choice about being a Slayer. If the point of the episode is about sharing power, that's great but what about those who neither want nor can handle the powers that come with being the Slayer. Also, I think that the process should be less random and more deliberate where being called means that you did in fact earn the calling, and it isn't just handed to a bunch of girls who may or may not be able to handle the responsibility that comes with real power.

Thematically, it makes perfect sense. The seventh season was all about going back to the beginning--the First Evil, Sunnydale High--and subverting it. The First Evil was defeated, Sunnydale was destroyed. And the very root of the show's mythology is the Slayer, the Chosen One, so they subverted that too, destroying the norm and sharing the power, sharing the burden.

Logically, it's stupid.
