If someone had asked me if this storyline was overdramatic and ridiculous just 2 years ago, I would have said absolutely. However, after personally dealing with something like this, I have to say my attitude towards it has changed quite a bit.
Take away what Buffy had just gone through with Angel. Take away that Buffy is the slayer. Let's just focus on her, Buffy the girl. When someone spends days, even weeks, courting you, you assume, and rightfully so, that it is going to lead to something more than just sex. Remember, Buffy didn't just fall into his bed after one night of knowing him; It was implied they spent a LOT of time together prior to it; We are assuming that he spent most of that time 'priming' her. It's always a shock, and painful to find out that a guy, who acted like he was completely into you just a day prior, has just used you for sex. Factor in that Buffy had, at that point, only had sex twice, the second time with said guy.
Now, if he'd been OPEN with her from the start; If he had told her "Hey, I just want to touch your boobies. I don't want to marry and have kids with said boobies, I just want to touch them; You cool with that?" That would have been ENTIRELY different, but he wasn't. He pretended that he was into her, he pretended that he wanted her for more than just sex. And then, after he was done using her, he spread the 'toilet' comment around. No one likes to be lied to, or used, or spoke ill of, but he put her through the trifecta there. I not only find it totally believable, but I deeply empathize with her, and I thank the writers for touching on this issue.
