When something needs to get cut, music is always the first thing to go, friends. *Sigh* A sad fact I happen to know all too well...
Opening Credits No Longer Popular

It's an interesting observation- I know that an awful lot of pilots don't have proper title sequences, but with a lot of older series- Star Trek and the Twilight Zone to name but two- the opening title music and/or narration are part of the series' legacy and what they're remembered for even by people who might never watch an episode in a million years. Fitting a long title sequence around commercial breaks I can see as an issue, but as has been mentioned it may also be a directorial fad that the current generation picked up at film school because there don't seem to be many options for being original in the space of thirty seconds or a minute.
It's also helpful with American series to have proper titles because I'm not necessarily familiar with all the supporting actors so it's useful to know who they are.

I don't really watch many shows without a theme song. The only one would be glee. It's a bit weird for them to not have a theme song I guess. Theme songs are so cool! Especially, Buffy, Angel, Doctor Who. Also not really a theme song but I love the Harry Potter theme. You know the one 🙂

Ringer does indeed have an opening sequence- I know because I FF through it. You're right though: Glee & OUAT do not.
Hmm, I'm thinking of the other current shows I watch:
Fringe- yes
Castle- no
Grimm- no
TBBT- yes
Finder- yes
Bones- yes
Awake- yes
Touch- yes
Although even the ones that do have opening sequences don't often actually feature screens of the actors- its often just some other kind of visual + credits, and they seem shorter than the Buffy/Angel ones.
I think they all legally HAVE to have opening & ending credits, but the ones with title cards only just run the opening credits at the bottom of the screen during the subsequent scene.

?? I never saw an opening sequence for Ringer. It's only the title and the 5 faces, but there's no real opening credits with the music and the names...

"Being Human" US and "The Vampire Diaries" are two shows I watch without a theme song...
I do have to say, though, "The Walking Dead" is a show that still has an opening sequence and I do love it. The theme song is haunting. 🙂

HBO shows seem to be the most frequent ones to still have opening credits. But man, are they long... I'm glad I can skip through the True Blood opening credits because the song isn't bad, but it bores me because of its length...

My friend and I were talking about this last night and some shows wouldn't do well with an opening sequence. Like having the title card only is part of the show. Like Supernatural. A true opening sequence would feel out of place on Supernatural. The title card works very well and it's part of the way the show works. Other shows like OUAT could work with a true opening sequence.

OK maybe I'm wrong. all I can find on YouTube is the short song with the picture of SMG & RINGER. I thought there was a longer version, with Bridget & Shibohan looking at each other and Bridget saying to Malcom "I saw a way out, and I took it". But maybe they just use it at the beginning as part of the "review" segment (what do they call that part, you know the "previously on Buffy" part?).

That was just part of the "previously" segment. I thought you were talking about a real opening credit like for other shows.
That stuff was getting pretty annoying by the end of the season, though. I mean you don't need to see that every episode. If you've never seen the show, you'll be lost anyways.

Not that it suit the show in general. Obviously. Or use the lyrics, make the tune different and it could work. I'm pretty convinced that they could have a working theme though. You (general) just need to see/hear it to know if it's fitting or not. If you're used to a certain opening/intro it would feel weird imagine something completely different.
