Love will tear us apart..
Okay, I feel like I need to point out the difference between friends with benefits and an open relationship...cos in my opinion and experience, it's far from the same.
I've done the friends with benefits thing, and it has nothing of a relationship. Maybe I did it with the wrong guys, but there's absolutely no obligation. You hang out with them when you hang out with your other friend, and when you're alone you sleep together. There's no respect, genuine feelings, obligation or anything else you would expect from a relationship. There's basically no romantic feelings, it's mostly just getting laid because you're both single and it makes you feel good.
Now in a relationship, even an open one, there definitely should be some feelings. Even when you're not exclusive with someone, I'd still expect some commitment. The friends with benefits thing is usually JUST to get laid, an open relationship isn't, I'd assume.

I think there's still a level of respect between friends with benefits.

^ what Willowmylove said. with out the respect, it's not FwB, it's just the benefits without even bothering with friendship. now, THAT'S hollow... to me, at least.
