Opinions on Important People Past and Present

Here's something I'd like to start doing. Everyday I will post a discussion in which we discuss and share opinions on important figures of past and present. Today's person is Che Guevara, what do you think of him? Che Guevara was an Argentine Marxist revolutionary, physician, author, intellectual, guerrilla leader, diplomat, military theorist, and major figure of the Cuban Revolution. He traveled the world to preach communism to whom he believed to be oppressed peoples. He was captured and later executed in Bolivia by a joint CIA-Bolivian task force. After his death, he became an international symbol of communism. What are your thoughts on Che Guevera, his life, his works, and his beliefs?

I'm pretty neutral. I think he did some good stuff and some bad stuff. He was really good looking though, a subject seldom discussed when it comes to this man 😀

I like Che. I like what he stood for, and liked that he felt so strongly about his beliefs that he was willing to die for them.

As a straight man, even I can see that he really was a good looking guy. 😉

My opinion of Che Guevera is that he was a man who saw what he believed to be wrong with the system, and he took a stand against it, and I believe he had good intentions. However, I can't say I agree with some of the means he used to spread his message.

Opinions on Jim Jones (12/29/2010)

What is your opinion on the communist man who claimed he was the reincarnation of Jesus Christ and forced over 900 people to commit mass suicide, and then assassinated an American politician and his committee who tried to prevent the mass suicide? I think he was a bastard who deserved to die, and it's a shame so many people followed him and killed themselves just because he told them to.

Che's ideals were definitely honorable - his fight was, first and foremost, about eliminating oppression and creating greater welfare and equality, and without his inspiration we wouldn't have several of the other great revolutionary figures of our time. However, I can't say I agree with his methods of bringing his vision to life and think he could have taken a more diplomatic, reformist route (then again, that opinion is really a result of my own political biases, as I tend to take a more social democratic stance).

Nice guy with good intentions who turned into a nutjob. History is full of them.

BTW, I was 11 when Jonestown happened. I remember reading the newspaper and watching the news and being freaked out at some many dead bodies.
