Since the Buffyverse is fictional, its origin and general structure don't have to match up with either modern cosmology or any traditional accounts, such as the Christian or Hindu. I think we'll all agree on that.
But what do we know about its origin?
Based on what Giles says in WTTH and what Spike says in S8 issue 37 (I think it is), I get the impression that the Buffyverse is no more than 10,000 years old.
The image that illustrates Spike's monologue shows a planet already existing that was covered with demonic nasties. Before that, as I read it, the planet either didn't exist at all, but "winked into existence" for some reason having to do with the Seed of Wonder, or else it existed in a lifeless condition, and the Seed caused life, at first demonic but later human, to appear on it. Or were humans present from the beginning? Maybe, maybe no.
The Seed maintains the existence of the Buffyverse. Even broken, the Seed can preserve the Buffyverse, at least for a time, but it can't do as much for the 'verse as it could if it were whole. If the Seed were lost completely, the Buffyverse would end. I'm not sure whether the "end" would mean that the planet itself would dissolve or disappear, or just that all life would die out.
Altogether, it reminds me of the Narnia universe, which the lion Aslan created by singing, and which came into being whole, complete with complex geographic features and a wide variety of life.
I know I don't have much to go on. I'd like to get some more thoughts form people.
