Overrated/Underrated

HiddenTracks and Faldor ( with the Dark Side of the Moon comment) got me thinking about music. There's lots of good stuff, new and old, but there's a lot of crap too. What do you think is underrated...something that is just awesome, but gets little respect. On the flip side, what do you think is just crap that everyone else raves about?

We don't have to limit this to music, although that was the original inspiration. We can talk movies, books, performers...anything.

I think Roxy Music's album Avalon is highly underrated. It was released in 1982, and never really got the attention it deserved. The neo-romantic movement was well under way, and it fit the mould, but the lush keyboards and great songs set it apart from the rest of the stuff out at the time.


I think Led Zeppelin is highly overrated. If I never hear Stairway to Heaven again, I'll be a happy guy!

Underrated: Third Eye Blind's Debut Album, Christina Aguilera's Stripped Album, Empire Records (movie), Family Guy (TV)

Overrated: Harry Potter, Brad Pitt (in terms of hottness, not acting ability)

Hehe, well I agree about Brad Pitt, I mean he does look quite good but the real thing about him is his acting, cause he is a great actor really...

Don't have much to contribute with though... (I just know someone will say Lord of the Rings (the movies) are overrated, and I'll just cry...)

Been a Zeppelin fan since i was just a wee lad so can't agree with you there.

One artist that i find to be incredibly, massively, stupendously (have i made my point yet? 🙂) overrated is The Streets aka Mike Skinner. I am so tired of hearing how brilliant his music is when basically he is just talking over some backing music. William Shatner wasn't allowed to get away with that so why should Skinner! 😛

It wouldn't be so bad if what he said was entertaining but even lyrically he is well below standard!

Nope, sorry but The Streets is not what i call proper music!

I guess I should qualify my dissing of Led Zep. I think they're ok, but I don't think their talent lives up to the massive hype they get. I don't mind their music, in small doses, once in a while. Actually, Whole Lotta Love is pretty good, I like it. But the massive hype is a bit much.

Well since everyone is saying Harry Potter is over-rated i'll plead for the defence. Personally I love the books and the movies, but the books more. When growing up there were few books that really captured me, most of them being by Roald Dahl, and as I got older Tolkien. So when I heard of Harry Potter I fell right back into my childhood again.

Another good thing about it, is that children had seemed to have lost interest in reading, prefering to go on the computer and watch tv. Where as when Harry Potter hit the shelves it got them back into reading which is a good thing.

hp's good, and it did good things, and i do agree with what ya said faith, i..just...don't think its totally worthy of all the hype and praise it recieves.

overrated - most reality tv shows (i have a slight slight soft spot for the nanny and mom switching.... ::blush:: other than that....*thumbs down*)

Underrated :
- Tolkien before the movies. It really was, I mean of course many people knew about it, but not that much compared to now. And if the movies did bring some fame to the books, among people, they didn't make Tolkien reputation go so much higher. Like, if I were to quote him in an essay in literature, & even if it's a perfect example, they (the profs) wouldn't judge it very good.
- Jan Siegel who wrote The Way of the Witch it hasn't even been translated in French & I think it's a shame so I'm on my way of translating it myself (always have to do everything by ourselves in this country ! :hmm: lol)
- BtVS (not in here of course but most of time outside when you say you watch BtVS it's like "what a jerk!" at least as far as I am concerned -though I don't care of course : king : )
- Depeche Mode ; at least in here, that's crazy, if you had not looked yourself, you could not know they even existed. Only few week ago I saw on TV a commercial about them but it was ONLY because of their song Linkin Park had re-arranged. I was like they could at least have said who they were for people who didn't know.
- I agree with Cord about Third Eye Blind & I add Mylène Farmer (for foreign countries), Vangelis, Era & Dead can Dance

Overrated :
- Paradoxically enough, LoTR, but of course not in the field of worthiness. I just think they are making too much money / advertisement over it. Remember Tolkien refused to make a movie of it, & now it's like most people who know about it know only the movie. Plu now every character has a real face on it... that's just pity where is going the imaginary which came from Tolkien amazing descriptions? All narrowed down to Elijah (sp), Orlando etc. I'm just very glad I read the book before the movie started to be shot & all.
- All of the reality shows (nc)
- Most of the "stars people", & I know I'm a part of the these who read articles about stars & all but in the same time I'm like, gee, just let them be.

Frenchy, I agree about BtVS, it is So underrated.. I don't know about anything as underrated as BtVS (at least where I live).

Um, about Tolkien.. I get what you're saying.. But I do think most people knew about LotR before the movies. I mean, the books are/were really famous, So many people have read them, and everyone know/knew who Tolkien were.. At least I think so, I knew who he was since I was seven and my father read the books to me, I think many people knew about him then too. (And, well, it's not like he has got less famous now. Many many people read the books the last years, before or after seeing the movies.. And in some ways that's good too.)

I think LOTR and Harry Potter are over rated. I also think all of the "in" bands are over rated as well.

Rush is so under rated. So is alot of the other older bands.

Well after a conversation I had with my friend's girlfriend I have to put this one in...overrated=scissor sisters (well I mean, they totally scissor suck) and underrated=Maroon 5. So I asked this girl if she likes them because I have the CD and hate it and would give it to her. And I mean, this girl is giving me the "I'm an internationally published music reviewer" bs (I took that to mean she's posted some reviews on websites) and blah blah blah the SS's are so great and original and blah blah blah hey you like that other band *boyfriend chimes in* Maroon 5 *end boyfriend* yeah Maroon 5 blah blah blah.

Meanwhile I've had their album over a year and it's great the whole way through.

Sorry I needed to rant about that one...

Leonardo DiCaprio - he's only good for certain roles where he plays a boyish type. I can't see him as a man really no matter how old he really is!

Paris Hilton - WHAT DOES SHE DO?!!!??
