I'm really getting tired of the phrase "elephant in the room" even though my reasoning for disliking it has nothing to do with grammar, and "I myself" 🙂 have used it.

I'm finding people use it as some kind of proof unto itself, and when you look for rationale behind it, it most often is not there. It's a BS phrase used to spread BS, and make one appear knowledgeable when there's no actual evidence to support the idea.

Elephant? What elephant? There's an elephant?

m'kay, that's one phrase I've never, ever heard before. I only know "elephant in the porcelain store", but I doubt that's it, right?

An important and obvious topic, which everyone present is aware of, but which isn't discussed, as such discussion is considered to be uncomfortable.

"elephant in the porcelain store".. I think it varies, I say "bull in a china shop", I guess it's the same thing.

A phrase that used to really annoy me was "do you know what I mean?" after the explaination of something. That gets on my nerves but I think that was back in the time when I used to watch Big Brother...so yeah.

Other than that, not a lot phrasewise, annoys me.

I work as a debt collector for medical bills. One of out biggest clients is Erlanger in Chattanooga TN. So here I am, this little minnesota girl, calling southerns. So here is my list of most annoying things I hear when talking to people in or around Chattanooga TN.

1. Ink Pen
2. If you can squeeze blood out of a turnip
3. Mam? (when they want you to repeat something)
4. He/She/They are fishing
5. 5 isn't so much a phrase as much as a general rule I've discovered: The older they are, the less you can understand them and the more they fish.

Hey! ^^ Watch it, you! I say that "blood out of a turnip" thing all the time, but I never hear it so I didn't think anyone even used that one anymore. And I say, "pardon?" when I need something repeated.....too funny!

I don't hear these phrases enough for them to be irritating. Things like people repeating catchphrases or little things from TV shows annoys me. Like a few years back when I was still in school, everyone was saying 'Gonnae no dae that!' - from a TV show. So annoying, Gonnae no dae that! GONNAE SHUT UP!

Well I guess its a good thing I dont use any of those phrases. Right now, im all into using text phrases (which I know can get annoying but its fun)
