Paint Shop or Photo Shop???

I'm a big fanart addict, but I've had to make due with basic photo editing software that I have available for some time now. I'm finally able to plop some cash down on something good, but I don't know if I should go for PhotoShop or Paint Shop Pro 8. Is there anything that sets the two apart (other than price...lol..)? What program is more often used with fanart artists?...Thanks bunches!

p.s. One last question...brushes: I've seen quite a few I like, but I'm wondering if the majority of them work for both programs...
 
Definitely Photoshop. I actually started out with Paint Shop Pro, then my friend was like, "no, no, no" and sent me a copy of Photoshop. It's really so much better, I love everything about it. You can do alot more with it too. Its not that Paint Shop Pro is bad, its just that Photoshop is better. My friend refers to Paint Shop Pro as Photoshops bitch. 😛
Both are good, but PS really is better though. Go with whatever you feel you want. You'll still get great art with whichever one you choose. 🙂
 
PSP is a very good program, and well worth seventy bucks. Photoshop is the best image-editing program on the market (and the industry standard) and if you were starting a graphic arts business you'd want to have Photoshop, but for personal use PSP is more than adequate (and chances are you'd never use 99% of Photoshops advanced features anyway).

If price isn't a factor, the Photoshop is the way to go. But since it's $600 and Paint Shop Pro is only about $70, then you're probably better off getting PSP to start and then moving up to Photoshop if you get REALLY into fan art. 🙂
 
Thanks for the help, guys! I've heard really great things about Photoshop, as well. If I can find it at a more reasonable price, I think I might do a little splurging and get it. If not, at least I know I can settle with the decent PSP now!
