A young Pakistani woman was burned to death by her mother and brother Wednesday, apparently because she married a man against her family's wishes, police said.

Zeenat Rafique, 18, had eloped and moved away, but returned to her family's home in Lahore because she was under the impression a reconciliation could occur, Punjab police representative Nabeela Ghazanfar said.

But when Rafique arrived, her mother and brother tied her to a bed, poured gasoline and set her on fire, Ghazanfar said. She died on the spot.

"There were marks on the body but I cannot confirm torture because it was burnt. We have to wait for postmortem report," Ghazanfar said.

The mother, Parveen Bibi, turned herself over to authorities and has expressed no sorrow for her actions, police said. She's now in custody. The brother, Ahmer Rafique, is on the run, police said.

About 1,100 women were killed by relatives in Pakistan last year, according to the country's independent Human Rights Commission.

The crimes originate from tribal practices and are often meted out as punishment for behavior viewed as bringing dishonor to a family or village.

Always women who suffer the most in religious cultures. Funny, that. To have such control over women that you can have women kill other women.

Absolutely horrible of course but nothing new. As seen in the link Mr. Pole posted there's reported honor killings averaging one/day in 2015 in Pakistan. It happens in other countries as well, even countries in the western world although not as common. Sadly changes in society takes time and one can only hope that things at least move in the right direction.


edit: What's the right direction differs between people but in this case it's the stopping of honor killings.
 
This is awful. I cannot imagine a world where your own family would do this, and yet it still happens.
 
From how I read the reports that appeared to be more about the family's standing in the community than a religion. The family seem worried by their lose of face, that the local people were not as scared of them as they once were. That sounds more like a gangster thing.
Is it a modern day Romeo and Juliet scenario where the daughter is murdered (not a suicide) (and not because of religion). Obviously all the facts were not given, but something sounds wrong to me.

Muqaddas Tawfeeq, 22, was eight months pregnant with her second child, her husband, Khalid Tawfeeq said. She visiting a maternity clinic for a checkup Thursday, when her mother appeared and "dragged her away" to her maternal home,Tawfeeq told CNN. Once there Muqaddas Tawfeeq's brother, Mohammed Adeel Bashir, attacked and slit her throat, Muhammad Tahir, Gujranwala regional police officer, told CNN.

Arrest warrants have been issued for the mother, Amna Bashir, and the brother, who are on the run, police said. "They hit her with wooden rods and when that didn't kill her, they slit her throat," the grieving husband said. "I want justice, I beseech the prime minister to help me, I want justice."
 
Ok, my intelligence is insulted a lot. On a daily basis. But, how can you be so oblivious to this? As @washburne said, it happens often, and in western countries too.

Are you guys naive to the world? Or dont see it cos its not on your feed? Do you censor your own internet use? Are you no where near media of any kind? Or #hashtags?

This happens so much, and it is so so sad. This, and so many other hideous human rights offences are happening, daily.

But no, lets spend our time arguing over toilets. Thats a human right too right? Must be more important cos more people are talking about it....

Less sad? No. If anything more sad. Happening once is bad enough, happening daily is worse. As for shocking I guess it depends. I see shocking as something you don't see coming. So if you're not used to news like this it gets shocking. If you're exposed to it daily, sad as it is, it won't affect you as much. Getting more or less numb to horrible things is terrible but a way for us to handle what we're exposed to.

I agree. My response was mainly to the idea that people may be uninformed simply because they feel sad and shocked when they read stories like this. I keep up with the news, but have yet to not be somewhat shocked by things like this. Although I supposed shocked may not be the best word, I'm not really surprised by it, I just (sometimes) have a hard time comprehending the hate and violence in our world.

As for this story specifically; I'm shocked that family can do this to family and be proud of it. I can theoretically understand feeling betrayed and disliking (or even hating) a family member but to physically kill them in such a brutal way is something I can't quite wrap my head around.
