So the Pan movie is bombing, who cares, but sometimes someone writes something so creative it makes it all worthwhile....

According to THR, the nationwide panning of Pan has panicked Warner Brothers' plan to build a series of family films — a Pan-chise, if you will — around the adventures of Neverland's pantalooned hero. The studio had hoped the film would be a panacea for its box-office woes, but that didn't pan out: The film's utter pancaking has instead thrown Warners' balance sheet into pandemonium, as the studio could reportedly lose up to $150 million on the ill-fated origin story. It's the latest in a panoply of Warner underperformers that includes The Man From From U.N.C.L.E. and Jupiter Ascending. In international markets, viewers' Pan-bivalence seems on the verge of turning into a full-scale pandemic, as the film has earned only $40 million worldwide, and it's up to China, where the film opens next week, to determine if the studio gets truly pantsed.
Well played, sir. Well played.

This is from

John Carter Files

"One would think that no marketing campaign co Joe Wright’s Pan, distributed by Warner Brothers who will be distributing Tarzan — and look what happened. The $150M family epic opened this weekend to an absolutely epically anemic $15M (John Carter opened at $31M)…..All I can say is — Wow. Is it possible that a Peter Pan prequel was simply unmarketable to today’s audiences? Or did WB just fail to crack the code?

A week before the release, Hollywood Reporter ran a “Pan is tracking terribly” article very similar to articles that appeared before the release of John Carter. In that article, the concern was that it might open as low as $30M when the target was closer to $60M."

There's more said there, but it pertains mostly to concerns that WB's upcoming Tarzan movie will suffer the same fate as "John Carter " and "Pan."

Yea it came in 3rd at the box office, losing out to Hotel Transylvania 2. I just don't think we really needed this movie, and it doesn't know who the audience is. There was a live action Peter Pan movie in 2003 and that only made 11M its opening weekend. Plus s3 of Once Upon a Time did Pan, and I felt that to be the weaker part of that season. So I just so see the need to make a Pan movie with similar tones to it's recent live action versions. It needed to do something more. And it also looked a it like a dark Stardust. I'm not going to go see this movie.

I'm not surprised it bombed. I could actually imagine a Pan origin movie that would interest me, but what I saw in the trailers looked just so generic. Visuals alone don't make a movie worth watching anymore.
It sucks that UNCLE bombed, though. That movie was really good and fun and I'm sure a lot of people would have enjoyed it. On the other hand, I miss Guy Ritchie's smaller crime movies.
