It's not just a British thing. I've heard of Shrove Tuesday being referred to Pancake Day before. However, Americans have many ethnic backgrounds, and each one has their own Carnival traditions. For example, in my part of the country, it's Polish Jelly Donuts.

I meant the lemon and sugar topping was a British thing, not pancake day itself. Shrove Tuesday is international!

A crepe suzette is essentially just a very fancy sugar and lemon pancake. So the French do it too. They maybe don't have the lemon shaped bottles of jif from morrisons, though - cos they're classier than us.

Shrove Tuesday is obviously a religious thing, marking the beginning of lent. The French and New Orleans have their big mardi gras celebrations, the Brazillians have their massive carnivale - we quietly use up our eggs and flour making flat yorkshire puddings and think it's a delicious treat 😛

I'm not even one day into lent - and I'm already thinking I could do with a biscuit to dunk into what is a very sad and biscuitless cup of tea. It's gonna be a looong time until Easter.
