Parts of Buffy that haven't translated to comic yet

So far there hasn't been a laugh-out-loud issue. On the show there were some totally silly episodes that were funny from start to finish. Hopefully Season 8 will have as much variety. I'm really looking forward to Jane Espenson's turn at writing - most of the entirely funny episodes were hers.

Maybe it's because there's less room for story in a 20-ish page comic, but we also haven't seen the gang do any normal stuff. When we see them they're always talking about twilight or increasing their defenses or Dawn's giant problem. I want to see a bunch of slayers huddled around a TV or something, talking about ordinary things. They must have a TV in that castle. What else do they do for fun when they aren't training? They don't have The Bronze now to go to unwind.

I think I read somewhere recently that it's been changed to "Forty issues or more>" I can't swear to it, though.
Due to the limited "time" available in individual comic books (the amount of story line in one issue would be covered between commercial breaks in a regular 1 hour episode, it's unlikely that an entire issue (or even several pages) would be devoted to something as mundane as a group watching tv or hanging around the Season 8 version of the Bronze unless it was an important element in the story. For what it's worth, though, I agree with you: I miss those "mundane" moments/"fun" episodes, too. We can only hope that they will be included in "Buffy, The Next Generation" when Joss & Company bring it back to tv. (Well, we can hope, can't we?)
 
I agree that the series needs a 'fundane' issue, but I can see how that wouldn't work in the comics. It certainly wouldn't be a multi-part story. But maybe they could do a Xander/Renee-heavy stand-alone? Do some character development and bonding at the same time?
 
I'd thought that Joss (or someone) mentioned in an interview that at some point, Buffy, Xand and Willow will just sort of chill out and have a long talk, and that'll be the bulk of the issue.

There have been a lot of great one-liners, if not laugh-out-loud moments. The best comic moments in Buffy have always been the quips, to me.
 
Another thing we haven't seen too much of is romance. There's been a little bit of tension. But that's it... a little bit. I wonder if maybe that doesn't translate well to the medium.
 
No not necessarliy...I'm not a big comic person, Buffy was the only reason I picked one up but I have read two where Buffy and Angel's romance was shown and it worked really well...I think they are just looking to establish the new season and anyway it's kind of early for Xander and Willow who both just lost their significant others and as Bufy said it's been a slow year
 
Yeah, I wonder if it's not just Joss getting so excited to tell an epic, cinematic sort of Buffy story. The first Twilight arc was such a plot-driven thing, with tons of characters interacting and all kinds of large events happening.

I really don't think comics are limited in the stories you can tell, or the tone you can get across. It just depends on what the creators want to do. And it just takes months and months (and months) to unfold.

Just to plug Vaughan again, if you read Y:TLM, there are a lot of extended conversations, complex friendships, romance...it all works (virtually) as well as a TV show.

I've decided though, it's more satisfying to read comics as TPBs. Bigger chunks, more engrossing that way.

TPBs are good, but the disadvantage is that you have to wait so damn long. Plus you can't really discuss the story online. Another big miss of TPBs is that they don't have the Letters to the Editor column.

If the cover is an appetiser and the comic is the main course, then 'letters to the editor' is the dessert. And boy, do I like desserts!

I like the letters section in anything i read, but the ones in Buffy season 8 are kinda long and boring D=

I think I read somewhere that Joss said that he "didn't want to play Romeo and Juliette," in this season, at least for awhile. Whether that was a general statement or he was only referring to guest appearances by Spike and/or Ol' Broody, I don't remember. Maybe someone else here can give more details.

That one specifically refers to Angel (and Spike). But what you're saying makes sense; no romance for a while. I feel that I (but possibly others too) need a little while to get back into the life of these characters. We've already got enough changes from the missing year to deal with, without new changes.

I wonder what the tone will be like for that season, and if it does happen, is that included in the planned 40 issues or after those? Because getting to issue 40 is probably going to take a few years, allowing that there will be some gap months without an issue, so starting a new run after that means Buffy would be around for a long time.

Apart from Star Trek I can't think of any other show that has been able to do that. To make people crazy for it. I don't think I could ever get enough Buffy.
