So I’ve been watching this drama for the past month and my GOD this show is so intense!!!

Party of Five is about five siblings who lost their parents in a car accident, and now their 24 year old irresponsible brother is forced to take on the role of their legal guardian.

1) Charlie (24 years old) is the oldest, a college dropout, good at seducing the ladies and is into carpentry. After the death of his parents, which happened on a night he was babysitting his siblings, Charlie was thrusted with a huge responsibility: becoming his siblings’ legal guardian. Not only did he not want that role, but he also wasn’t fit for it at all. He messes up a lot, and his younger brother, Bailey, always cleans up his mess. However, Charlie had to sacrifice a lot for his younger siblings, and eventually becomes a very dependable older brother and father to them.

2) Bailey (16 years old) is the second sibling and at the start the most responsible. He takes on the maternal role, taking care of everyone in the household, heck even their baby brother’s bed is in his room. Bailey, more often than not, tries to break away from his role as the responsible brother who cleans up the mess of Charlie and his other siblings.

3) Julia (15 years old) is the third child and oldest sister. She is known for her intelligence and being a bookworm. She’s basically a sensitive and insecure nerd. However, after the death of her parents, Julia rebels against her old persona: she starts working in a night club, ditches her nerdy friends and befriends the popular crowd. She eventually grows out of this phase and becomes more responsible.

4) Claudia (11 years old) is the fourth and youngest sister. She inherited her mother’s musical talent and is a skilled violinist. Poor Claudia had to make sacrifices of her own as well, for example, in the first season, she is the only one without a bedroom. Her bedroom is a tent in the living room. Her problems are rarely her siblings’ first priority, and is often forgotten and neglected.

5) Owen (1 year old) is the youngest sibling. Owen doesn’t really have an arc or a personality as he’s a baby. He’s mostly used as a plot-device to move the story forwards.

I often struggle to pick a favorite character as all characters charm and annoy me in different situations. Though I find myself drawn to either Charlie or Bailey. Sometimes I love Claudia. I’m not a huge fan of Julia. Most of her storylines are about the boys she dates and it’s probably why she’s the least interesting one IMO, but whenever she has a different storyline, I’m gripped.

In each season, there’s that one huge and awesome episode:

Season 1: The Thanksgiving episode where the driver who killed the kids’ parents is released from jail months earlier.

Season 2: The abortion episode.

Season 3: The Intervention episode.

Season 4: The revelation of Charlie’s cancer episode.

Season 5: The Judgement Day episode (which I've just watched and was incredibly intense) though another episode was also very strong - the episode where 5 years old Owen gets lost in the mall.

I’m about to finish S5 right now, and I've only got S6 and then the show will be over. But all I’m gonna say, it’s a great show with great characters. It’s a bit dated in a lot of aspects, especially in the way Bailey treats his girlfriends - which I hated a lot, but he’s improved so much from S4 on.

One of the highlights is the 90s guest stars!!! Cory and Shawn (Boy Meets World) appeared in different episodes as Claudia’s boyfriends. Ben Wyatt (Parks and Recreation) is attracted to Julia in college. Mary Alice Young (Desperate Housewives) was Charlie’s rich girlfriend in S2. Steven Hyde (That 70s Show) was one of the members in the band Sarah (Jennifer Love Hewitt) joined, Sarah being Bailey’s girlfriend.

Anyone remember this show? Also, can anyone recommend a show like this where family is the main theme, something like Parenthood. It's my kind of drama.

I remember this show! I had such a crush on Charlie... I've been listening to a podcast where one of the hosts just watched the whole thing and she can't stop talking about it, haha. Or screaming about it rather. I'm not sure I'm ready to re-watch it myself though. I remember it being a huge deal when Julia got hit by her boyfriend (if I remember correctly) and that Bailey turned about alcoholic at some point.

Don't have any real recommendations in that drama area, I think there's a show called Brothers & Sisters but I haven't watched it myself.

Remember it? Spent too long trying to forget it.

I was surprised that Scott Wolf never really did anything after the show. He seemed like he had a face for the business.

I agree. Those dimples are so lickable.

Same here. 😀 I was so shocked when I realized he's Jack from Lost - I was never attracted to Jack. I guess long hair suits Matthew Fox better.

Link, please?

I've just reached the conclusion to the Julia/Ned storyline - thank God that's over! The Bailey/Charlie fight over Owen was so interesting, I loved how yelled their dirty laundry at each other, hee.

The show is so sad and heart-squeezing, I don't know if I'll ever watch it again. I loved the Charlie with cancer storyline and Julia's abortion storyline - I read that she was actually going to go through with it but the network demanded it'll be changed to miscarriage.

Thanks, I'll try that show after finishing Party of Five.

I remember being so, so upset about the cancer story. Ooh, now you're making reconsider not re-watching it. It was such a drama drama.

The only reason I watched the first episode of Lost was because I knew that Charlie was gonna be on it, haha, since I didn't stick with it, guess long haired Matthew Fox suits me better as well 😉

It's not a podcast about Party of Five, sadly. It's just a gossip podcast that talks tv shows and celebrity gossip in general, it's called Page 7, so there are no real episodes dedicated to Party of Five entirely. Page Seven

I saw a few episodes of this show and thought that they had great actors, good drama that didn't fall off the cliff into melodrama and decent plot lines. I always did like Jennifer Love Hewitt and was surprised she didn't carry the show into higher ratings just by her presence. But there was never any buzz about it at the time. They say promotion is everything in this business and this is definite proof of that - it never got enough.

I vaguely remember watching episodes of Party of Five here and there as a kid, but I don't think I ever really watched it, y'know?

As for recommendations, I used to love Step By Step growing up 🙂

Ah, I also loved Step by Step. The sitcom with Suzanne Summers I think?
I loved Party of Five, until the last or so season when it was just not as good.

The only "family show" I can think of at the moment is 7th Heaven (lol). Or maybe Switched at Birth.

I watched it growing up, I dont remember a huge amount besides crushin' on the older boys and wondering how they girls always looked so cool. It was one of the first shows that gave me an idea of young american life. I did enjoy 7th Heaven too (and am saddened by what came out later about it, but I also grew up on the Cosby show) and always wondered how on earth they managed to have so much food!

Have you seen Six Foot Under? Its a good family drama.

For old family sitcom suggestions -
The brady bunch
Full house
Malcolm in the Middle
3rd Rock from the sun
Roseanne

There are a couple of aussie comedy/dramas that are family based -
Offspring
Packed to the Rafters
Upper Middle Bogan
Puberty Blues (based in the 70's)
A country practice (more community based)
House husbands (I havent seen this but have a friend on it)

Thats all I can think of now!

Thank you for the suggestions. I've watched almost all the sitcoms - except Malcolm in the Middle: first episode had the mother shaving the father's hair and it grossed me out, but my brother insists I should complete the show.

Having not seen it at the time I don't have such fond memories. Seen a few episodes more recently and just seemed bland to me. Not cheesy, trashy or inventive enough for my tastes😀 Best thing I can say is that it at least gave Campbell her break🙂

Brothers & Sisters was pretty good, but became a soap after season 2.

Switched at Birth was actually pretty good.

I'd suggest Once & Again. It's one of my all time favorites. 🙂 Made by creators of My So Called Life. Very well written and acted. Might be kind of hard to find, though.
