Joyce: "Oh, well... guess that was the talk"
Buffy: "So how'd it go?"
After Angel's drops the news on Joyce that he and Buffy had slept together, we see their exchange later in her room. So friends, how do you think 'the talk' went? Did Joyce handle it well?
I like the cheeky nod by the writers to the fact that this experience was also 'the first' for Joyce too ("I don't know. It was my first").
It wasn't the Talk. Buffy is already 17 and lived in LA. Half of teens would have lost their V Card by that point. Heck, I had taken Sex Ed and a Theology class on sexual morality. By that point. More than likely Hank sat Buffy down back when she was 12, and Season 2 Joyce doesn't remember because she was drunk at the time.
I'd taken "the talk" to mean that part of Buffy being in trouble rather than birds & bees. And on that note, Joyce focused on the less scary (Buffy had sex with an older man!) to ignore the scarier part (that man is scary and might kill Buffy). Seems like standard Joyce. Well written and true to her character, but not Mom of the Year material.
But if the talk meant birds & bees (and given the writers this is probably so) then the talk sucked. Even if Buffy is having sex, she doesn't necessarily know anything about it (though a good chance she at least already knows--by both school and own research--what many parents who are uncomfortable would say to just get it over with, save the fear mongering--though I acknowledge there's plenty to fear, some of the things adults say to teens about sex is hysteria to dissuade them with). Still, I take it for mildly comedic writing.
NotASlayerAlthough, going by what we have seen of mothers in Sunnydale, Joyce is actually above average! :D
I don't mean to hate on Joyce. I've defended her in the past even when it was unpopular to do so. But she's flawed. (Like everyone else, including Buffy.) This makes for an interesting and well-rounded character.
Still, in this specific instance, I can't praise Joyce (though I can praise the writing and acting).

Absolutely. I don't think anyone is under the impression that 'the talk' is the one about 'the birds and the bees'. Considering Joyce asks whether Angel was her first, and if she used protection.
I just randomly thought about their exchange as I know a number of fans come down pretty hard on her for her parenting choices, so was wondering if people thought she handled this well.
Likely the first serious talk about guys. We can only really speculate, but maybe Buffy just casually dated prior to her move to Sunnydale.

Absolutely. She's not getting any 'mother of the year' awards but there's times I cut her some slack. And if you hate on Joyce, it's perfectly fine. You're allowed to! And allowed to voice your concerns about her character!
In this situation, Joyce was obviously pretty rattled. Creepy guy looking like he's going to hurt her/follow her into her home. Creepy guy tells her her daughter has had sex with him. That's a lot to take in and process in 60 seconds.
But, her concerns are worth Buffy listening to. He's older, and "obviously not very stable".
I did have a chuckle at the, "He's old. Too old" - and Buffy must be thinking, 'if only you knew how old he really is'!
