Passion

I re-watched this episode the other day, and it's now one of my favourite ever episodes. The writing is amazing, the acting is flawless, it's so full of emotion. I have to admit, I almost cried when Giles finds Jenny in his apartment.
One of the reasons I like this episode so much, is you can see how much the events affect each individual member of the Scooby Gang.
I think the only downside to this episode is that Jenny died, I loved her and Giles as a couple and it would have been interesting to see where it would have gone, if she hadn't been killed off.
 
God I never knew it was supposed to be Oz not Jenny that Angelus killed.

Can't really imagine that. Angelus' violence is so caught up with a sort of seduction. As is usually the case with vampires. Violence and Seduction. The scenes with him and Jenny have an under current of flirtation to them.

Imagine that with Oz. Mental picture of Angel chasing Oz around the highschool with Oz screaming hysterically. Angel tenderly stroking Oz's lips before snapping his neck... LMAO!

Yea, Joss said that people loved Oz so much he decided to keep them around. And you sense some underlying flirtation between Angelus and Jenny? I can see that. There was the obvious "cat & mouse" game when he was chasing her. And because Angelus really is so cruel he knew exactly how to get at Giles: though Jenny and his hopes for their reconciliation. So even though we don't see it, you can imagine how creepy it would have been to watch Angel set all that up in Giles's apartment and put Jenny's body in his bed. Ack.
 
I was rewatching this and after Giles enters his house I can't remember when he first invited angel into his house. If he did then why didn't he have the ritual performed on his house?

Yea, and we can assume that just because Angel wasn't invited into Giles' house onscreen, it doesn't mean the event didn't occur offscreen.
 
Has anyone ever noticed that on Itunes that this is listed as 'Old Passion'... What's that all about?

Really? That would have just driven home the distardlyness of Angelus even more. I really wish that they had gone down this route, because for me Angel's treatment in Season 3 was a bit too easy. The only two that were really against him excluding the odd comical one liner from Cordy were Xander and Giles; Giles you could understand (though still a bit harsh given Angelus and Angel are two completely different people), but Xander was just being an idiot. If Angelus had killed Oz AND Jenny, I think it would have made the aftermath (Season 3) even more compelling.
 
Passion is, by far, my favorite episode of Season 2. The scene with Jenny and Angelus is really intense, beautifully construct and it leads to a memorable sequence (the shot with both characters in front of the window). Same thing for the scene where Giles discovers Jenny, with a perfectly chosen music.

In addition, I am a big horror movie fan and I thought this episode was the most frightening and intense one!

Yea, I remember falling in love with it! It is from Puccini's opera, La Boheme (the hit musical Rent is based off of this opera, and they are pretty darn similar!) and is called, "O soave fanciulla." I used to know the lyrics, but right when Giles finds Jenny, the character Rodolfo is confessing his love for Mimi (for those Rentheads out there, this would be "I Should Tell You" from Roger to Mimi). It is the perfect music for this scene.
 
I remember this episode very well. It had such an impact on me when I first saw it, that I can clearly remember what I was doing that night. The scene where Angelus kills Jenny left me feeling paralyzed for a few seconds because I was so shocked. I mean, I knew Angel was evil, but I always had this sliver of hope that there was some good left in him, and that scene just ripped that hope away from us (and Buffy) and forced us to see that he was another monster Buffy had to put down.

This was on very well written episode.

Yea, that's exactly what Joss wanted to do: any hope you had for Angel still being good, he wanted to crush!
Passion is one of my favorite episodes.
Really emotional and moving.

I'm re-watching the series and I'm right in the middle of Season 2. Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered is next.
After that comes Passion. I'm really looking forward to it, although it's a sad episode. But great anyway.
 
I can't really say much about this episode, except that I was extremely saddened by Jenny's death, I was slightly aroused when Angelus snapped her neck, and it gave me one of my most favorite voiceover's ever. 😉
 
There are episodes that are more critically acclaimed than "Passion" but it's my personal favourite. Season 2 churned out some duds but the story arc is the best imo. Like everyone else has said, it was the episode where it really hit you what a cruel and heartless bastard Angelus is. What he did to Giles is hands down for me the most brutal thing I've seen in the series so far (I'm up to Tabula Rasa/Quickening) and his portraits of a sleeping Buffy and Joyce were frightening. I love the music too, especially Remembering Jenny. I thought I'd never like him again after the scene where Angelus smirks at Buffy and Willow outside the window, such a great scene in the history of the series. An amazing episode and top 5 worthy for sure.

Loved Cordy, I just re-watched Passion last night and she's come a long way.
 
In some way, this episode felt like the moment everything changed. This is the first time such an important character dies. It's like it all became real. We're dealing with vampires. People actually die. Not just the girl in the alley. And if someone like Jenny can die, anyone can, and anything can happen. Brilliant.

Re: the garlic question--the freshly-minted Angelus of the flashbacks in "The Prodigal" described garlic as a "foul herb":

"You're no different from the rest of them, are you, father? Cowering in their houses, boarding up the windows, smearing that foul herb in the doorways. You'd think something evil and vile and monstrous had taken to terrorizing this village and everyone in it."

So judging from that and the way there tend to be strands of garlic here and there throughout the series, it seems like garlic isn't so much a weapon as a ward. Like, it doesn't necessarily hurt vampires like holy water and crosses, it's just repugnant to them.

I totally agree - I've rewatched that scene so many times. He is just so purely enraged that he doesn't stop to think that he's definitely going to get himself killed.
 
Probably my favorite Buffyverse episode, I loved the emotions it brings up when I watch it. The whole episode is very dark and sad, it really builds an atmosphere. Angel is fantastic, this is probably the #1 reason I think he was the best Big Bad Buffy ever faced and how creepy were those pictures he drew?? I loved Jenny and it was sad to see her go, but this episode is such an important point in the season

The only thing I didn't like was Xander. Seriously, Jenny just died and Giles went to fight Angel, stop being an annoying d*ck, not everything needs to be a joke, Xander did slightly ruin the atmosphere of the episode. This episode reminds me how annoying Xander becomes in later episodes.

Anyways, Angel's narration? Remarkable. David is such a good actor, and I don't know who wrote it, but they deserve an award. I'll post it for the fun of it 😀

Totally agree. I also found it ruined the atmosphere. Sometimes there is time to be somber and this is one of them.
