Patrick Swayze, the star of such varied movies as "Dirty Dancing," "Ghost," "Road House," and "Red Dawn" has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
 
I don't think it's such a big deal. Millions of people suffer from cancer. Of course it's not nice but I think it's wrong if people now care so much only because that guy is famous.
You should always be aware of such diseases, not only suddenly when an actor gets it.

Having lost both of my grandfathers and my mother and father to cancer, I tend to be more "aware" of such diseases than most, so whenever I hear of someone that I know, either personally or simply through their work, has it, it is a "big deal" with me. My main reason for mentioning Mr Swayze's condition is that he is an actor whose work I have always enjoyed and I assumed that some of his other fans here, especially those living outside the United States might not have heard about his condition.
 
Thank you White Avenger for thinking of other fans outside US. Although I am not a big fan, I liked him as an actor especially in Ghost. I also liked the fact that he was married to the same woman for so long without any hints of scandal. If there were any scandal he was not a publicity seeker and must have kept it private. This is rare nowadays. I sincerely hope he wins this battle. I also lost my mother to cancer.

He is(well was) a big star, it has been news through out the world, though I am in agreement with Social Suicide.

The simple fact is people are dying from one thing or another every second.
It is only the rarest of these seconds that it is someone I know personally.

Without sounding callous (which is exactly how I am going to sound) I really don't care about the other peoples in those seconds. I wish I could, but if I spend my time giving thought to this that and the other then I wouldn't have time to live my life.

Also, I must say that I find your statement a tad offensive there WA.

With the shocking statistic that within every 5 people one will have been affected by Cancer, be it themselves or a loved one, your 'more aware than most' actually strikes me as on the verge of a disgusting.

You have felt the tragedy of loss through one of the many forms of Cancer but that in NO way gives you some kind of ability to hold it against other people which is what you seem to be doing here and preach that more than most are aware of it.

I have a cousin who is actually in the final stages of her life. She is 26 she has a Lung Cancer that only 10 people in the whole of the UK has with no chance of a cure.

She is spending the time she has left just surviving. The family can't do anything to help her.

Every single day we watch as she deteriorates that little bit more BUT because she doesn't want to see her family upset she puts on a brave face.

The family at the same time, doesn't want her remaining time to be sad so they make believe, for her, that everything is fine.

She's 26, she's had a harsh life as it is being born deaf and unable to speak properly.

This, however, doesn't give me the right to laud it over others because I am affected by it and get snippy because someone doesn't find it a big deal that one slightly less anonymous person in a far off land she has never met has this dreadful disease. She is not belittling the disease but how automatically we're to feel sorry for this stranger because he starred in a film and if we don't we're portrayed as bad people.

As she said, you should always be aware of the disease.
 
If I in any way offended Social Suicide or anyone else by my reply to her post, then I apologize. My intention was merely to explain my reasons for bringing Mr Swayze's condition to the other members of the board.

As Bored of the Dead has pointed out, courtesy and tact are two things that should we should all strive to observe at all times, both here and in our daily lives. Coming from such a sterling example of both, I am truly humbled.

Certainly, the fact that Mr Swayze is a celebrity makes his condition no more important than anyone else in the world who has cancer, or AIDS, or any other disease. If I have given the impression that I am any more concerned for him than I would be for anyone else, then, once again, I most humbly apologize.

Personally I do not understand why people get on their highorses about this one way or another. The simple fact that Patrick Swayze is a well known actor dealing with cancer in no way takes away from anyone else in the world suffering this disease or their families for that matter. I have always enjoyed his acting and hearing his diagnosis saddened me. I refuse to apologise for that as if it is somehow shallow to feel for the man's plight. It doesn't mean I don't care about the millions of other cancer patients around the world and within my own family. By jumping on the soapbox and saying he shouldn't get attention about his illness becuase he is famous and it makes others seem insignificant it actually comes off as the others are more important becuase they are not famous.

Bottom line it's a horiffic situation and my sympathies go out him and his family but also to you and yours BoTd. Both thses families are in turmoil, famous or not. Why waste our time arguing over soemthing so bloody trivial as to who we should have more sympathy for.

Having suffered from Dad's loss due to same diagnosis, I'm quite sad to hear it, even if I never counted Patrick Swayze as my favorite actor.
That's just too horrific thing to happen..
 
I heard about that a few weeks back, I was upset by the news 🙁 Dirty Dancing rules. I seriously hope he doesn't die from it =/
 
I hope he'll be cured from this. When i heard about his condition I was very upset too🙁 It made me think about my aunt who died because of cancer a few years ago...

Also, the fact that he IS a celebrity focuses more interest and concern in cancer in general, and pancreatic cancer in particular , which always results in an increase in contributions for research and treatment.
 
I lost my father in 2003 & my nan in 1999 to cancer - I would think most likely everyone, or nearly everyone here has had their lives touched by it in some way or another - as BOTD said 1 in 5 people are affected by it.

Cancer doesn't care whether you are rich or poor, famous or unknown, old or young. It kills regardless.

My heart goes out to anyone whose life is affected by cancer, whether directly or indirectly.... including Mr. Swayze.
 
I am very sorry for anyone and their loss due to any kind of illness.
We in our home pray for a full recovery for patrick.

Very nicely put edb. I've also lost loved ones (two grandfathers, and about to lose a third to it) and feel for you and everyone else. And the fact that I can empathize with people I don't know shouldn't be a negative. You shouldn't condemn people for empathizing. It's human nature. Obviously pretty much everyone is aware of the effects of cancer. So when a celebrity is suffering through this disease and it is publicized, people care. That's a natural reaction. You hear about someone hurting, you feel bad for them. I think to say it's not a big deal is very callous and inhuman of you, obviously it is a big deal to him and his loved ones, and to just say "oh well, it's not anyone I know" is very rude in my opinion.
