Penny Lane to be renamed?

In 1967, The Beatles released a song titled Penny Lane, which is inspired by the actual street name. Though the song was about their childhood memories in the northern English city, the street has been rumored to be tied to slavery in the past. Many have speculated the street is associated with James Penny, who was a notorious slave trader in the past. He had defended the slave trade to the British Parliament, and Liverpool had become Europe’s most used slave port by 1740. BBC noted that several street names are tied to slavery. However, the city’s International Slavery Museum told the BBC that the association with slavery for Penny Lane’s name is “not conclusive.”

The signs of the street have been vandalized in the past week due to the increasing anti-racism protests that have been taking place across the world. The sign was even changed to “racist lane,” highlighting the possible slavery past. “If it is as a direct consequence of that road being called Penny Lane because of James Penny, then that needs to be investigated,” Liverpool’s mayor Steve Rotherham told local news outlet Sky News. “Something needs to happen and I would say that sign and that road may well be in danger of being renamed,” he added.

Apart from there's no evidence that it was named after James Penny. Still, lets inconvenience the people who have lived there for years and force them to change their address all because some SJWs have got their knickers in a twist. Your driver's licence and tax address would change and you would have to convince your bank that you hadn't pulled a bait-and-switch with your mortgage - they don't take too kindly to giving you a mortgage for one address and then the address changes. Then all your utility bills, credit card bills and shipping address would change. All to accomplish... nothing.

But so what if the street is named after a slave trader? There is no sense hiding the past because it exists regardless of whether you stick your head in the sand and pretend it doesn't. I would be more suspicious that racists would want the name changed because it presents a starting point for a conversation about an ugly past.

That is exactly what the democrats want. They have a history of racism and any money donated to BLM is actually being filtered of to the democrat party.

The question is where does the pandering stop? Are people going to be expected to change their names next just because a slave trader had the same name?

Precisely. Liverpool's proud of its past - warts and all - it doesn't try to hide it. It has a huge Museum of Slavery on The Albert Dock; The Beatles Museum is behind; The Museum of Liverpool across the dock and The Tate to the side. It's open about all aspects of its culture. It has a long street called Hope Street with the Anglican Cathedral at one end and the Catholic Metropolitan Cathedral on the other. Joe will do what Joe wants to do...and what the people of Liverpool want him to do.

They're way ahead of other cities in making sure they give a balanced perspective of the past. "Earlier this year the council voted unanimously to install informative plaques on the city's roads named after slave traders in a renewed effort to acknowledge the difficult history". Seems a sensible compromise to me. In fact, I think everyone should be doing it.

From The Telegraph 20 Jan 2020 - Liverpool are way ahead of what's being demanded at the moment. This is why I don't think they'll rename Penny Lane (whether it's named after the slaver is debatable - other people argue it's because it was originally a toll road that cost a penny). LOL! That aside, it's a lot of fuss over a sign that's usually conspicuous by its absence - it's regularly stolen by tourists!

Liverpool city mayor Joe Anderson is calling for new signs to be installed next to paintings, street signs and buildings in the city to explain how they are linked to the slave trade.

Penny Lane - the street that inspired The Beatles song - is one of the places that could be adorned with a sign if the plan is approved, because it is thought to have been named after James Penny, a slave ship owner in the 18th Century.

In a motion set to be discussed by Liverpool City Council next week, Mr Anderson said the city should "accurately reflect how some of the wealth and prestige accumulated for the benefit of Liverpool was gained through the business of slavery".

"It is important to ensure that city visitors and residents are given an honest account of the historical role which our city and such figures played in history," he added.

Liverpool's lord mayor, Anna Rothery, said: “This motion opens up a dialogue. It’s crucial we have a healthy conversation about the city, our history, and more importantly where we go in the future. It’s part of a healing process, and is about where we are as a city and the work we are committed to doing around anti-discrimination.”

Liverpool City Council formally apologised for the city's historical role in the slave trade in 1999 and has since held annual events to commemorate Slavery Remembrance Day.

It's been a common strategy probably since the dawn of man, for certain people (now known as politicians) to take it upon themselves to play certain groups against each other in order to keep themselves in power. Whether it's the Neanderthals against the Cro Magnons, the Egyptians against the Hebrews, the Christians against the Infidels, the Lords against the serfs, the "Dayum" Yankees against "Good Ol' Boy" Southerners, the Democrats against the Republicans, the Whites against the Minorities, the Bangels against the Spuffies, or just about any other two opposing groups, someone, somewhere, is always going to be stirring things up to serve their own plans.
