People that tell completely unbelievable lies

Everybody knows somebody that lies all the time. I especially knew a load at School. These idiots can totally mess with your perception of stuff in general. That time in life is when you're still in the vulnerable learning process, so when a Billy Bullshit comes along saying he can do something impossible, you, in your naivety assume that you can reach a similar level to him. So when you actually try you either get injured or make a fool of yourself.

There was one kid at my first primary school who claimed to be Harrison Ford's cousin, who came into school one day with the actual whip used in the filming of the Indiana Jones movies which, curiously, resembled a hoover nozzle attachment with some electric cable tied to it. When I was at secondary school, some kid who liked causing trouble and showing off claimed in all seriousness that he put a 1p coin on a railway line and it flipped over a train. Makes me smile even to this day.

When I was about ten, I remember this kid called Martin. He claimed that his dad had, in some combination, at one point worked for Nintendo, Sega and Commodore. As a result he had obviously played hundreds of games from the far-flung future. One favourite of his was Super Mario Bros. 10, where apparently at the end both Mario and Luigi had sex with the Princess. Also, he claimed he had played a game that was full of naked people, and the men fired lasers from their willies and the women fired lasers from their boobies and fannies. Seemed a bit unbalanced to me.

There was also a kid who claimed that he had found silicon deposits in his back garden using his home computer, and had consequently built a vast underground bunker full of supercomputers, accessible via a special elevator that could be called from a special switch that he had hidden behind his bedroom light switch. He even brought in a special security pass (which, curiously, resembled a plastic ID card from a science-fiction playset) for me and a couple of friends so that we would be able to access that switch. He never quite got round to bringing in the Transformers with working lasers that he promised us after his dad bought them in America. He, curiously, just kept forgetting them.

My sister had a 'friend' who claimed to be in love with a total hottie. Nothing wrong there, except she took a picture of him to school one time. Eventually it appeared to be just a cut out photo of a model in some perfume ad. She tried to cover it up by claiming that her bf looked just like him. Another kid in school reckoned his dad was in the SAS. Not entirely impossible, but he also claimed his dad kept a helicopter in the back garden of their council house and would fly to Ireland every weekend to bomb the IRA.

However, you'd expect this from kids. When adults are involved things become crazier because there is usually something psychologically wrong with people that feel the need to lie all the time to make themselves appear interesting. I was in a pub one time and this guy I'd met a few times told me that David Bowie was like a dad to him and they were really close. Go on, I said prove it. So this guy takes out his mobile and "calls" David Bowie and has a conversation with him, of course when I said I'd like to chat to him as well there were many reasons why I couldn't.

Pub liars are usually drunk so their bullshit can be somewhat excused, but there isn't an excuse for some of the rubbish people I've worked with have come out with. The latest one is a guy I worked with, called Richard (or Dick, as he is a dick) who looks like Herman Munster, but with a personality bypass. He must have nothing but funhouse mirrors at home, because he thinks he's the shit. Too many lies to mention, but it's the ones about the women he claims to pick up all the time. He was in buying a coat last week in H+M, a black 'perv' coat. Says that as he was paying for it, he asked the shop assistant for her phone number. Of course she duly obliges and they were 'Having dinner next Thursday'. He was spreading this around like wildfire, some dicks eating his every word, like proper "GO ON, MY SON!!" shit. Thing is, I was in H+M the same day. The exact same time in fact. And I saw his mum buy him his coat and him go completely red when she told him, that they had to 'go to Primark next, as you're badly off for underwear', all within earshot of this 'lovely' shop assistant.

There was another bloke I used to work with who was brilliant for bullshit. Whenever there was sport on tv he used to claim to be an expert because he used to do that sport professionally. This included Speed Skating and Synchronised swimming. This he insisted was true even though he was pretty tubby and only about 25. He was also a big Inter Milan fan and once when they were playing in Europe he left work early to fly to Italy to go see them. We all knew this was bullshit so asked if he could bring us back some programmes or memorabilai or something like that. Unsurprisingly on his return (without any progrmammes or memorabilia) he claimed he couldn't be arsed getting a programme as they were only sold on the opposite side of the stadium to where he sat.

Before this I worked with a guy called Dave who was quickly renamed "do it all Dave" as he had seen and done everything you could imagine. Lunchtimes became entertaining though as we started to drop random things into the conversation to see if he would join in and claim to have also done it. Some of the memorable ones include driving a WWII tank, breaking his neck by diving into an empty swimming pool, owning some completely made up albums by Pink Floyd (I can't remember the titles but they were ridiculous things like "mind the kettle" and "hatstand pavlova"). It went from amusing to quite depressing and not at all funny though when one of the girls at work had a child who was ill in hospital with meningitis, and Dave decided to tell her how he'd had it too.

Another guy claimed after returning from holiday in the US that he had been playing basketball, then Will Smith came onto the court and joined in. Ok! Also another guy who must have been in his 40s claimed that he had a pair of night vision goggles and he was out with them one night and spotted a monster in a bush.

Yeah, just a monster.

"brilliant for bullshit" I love that!
Sounds like you work with some "interesting" people. I think they are probably related to my ex.

*head desk* man, I was really really gullible and stupid once upon a time. He used to claim he was a sniper in the army before he was discharged, and worked as a nurse caring for the elderly and how sad it was when one of them died, and he spoke 569 different languages, and he was friends with adrian peterson, and his grandma left him this huge trust fund and he was secretly a millionaire, but couldn't touch the money yet cause it's in trust.....gah makes me feel soooooo incredibly stupid that I ever believed one weird that came out of his lying mouth. I blame it on youth.

No offense, but how old were you? I imagine that a lot of that could have been delivered in a convincing way, but...
I think youre making most, if not all, of those examples up. And I totally own both of those Pink Floyd albums 😉

Christopher agrees: HAHAHA, 569 languages!!!!

I may be slightly exaggerating there, but he seriously claimed to know practically every language. Russian, arabic, etc. etc. etc. Nothing common around here (like spanish) mind you, so that you couldn't really test it. And yes, I was 19 and dumb. Dumb dumb dumb.

Dumb and bass.
I did a bit of harmless made-up-to-sound-not-that-pathetic lying as a child, that I had a boyfriend that lived near me and had the same last name. I was a dumb child, apparently, and I think everyone got I was lying when I said the last name bit. I realized that pretty quick afterwards though. (I hope I did anyway.)

But that was because I was bullied and needed to make people think I wasn't a victim. Not sure what excuses "grown ups" have. Many of the people you describe seems to have mental illness. Just the fact that they think people will buy the lies are is insane.

My aunt is like that, but worse. Not just that she lies, and seems to believe every word of it too, she has other mental illnesses as well. She thinks she has all kinds of deseases, walks around in a nightie, lost custody of her kids (her oldest daughter is taking care of the younger ones), is aggressive, says my mom is the sick one, etc etc.
She even claims to have been raped, and we don't even know if it's true. She's a joke in our family now, and the lying, among other things, made my mom's childhood a hell, since their parents, and at least one of their brothers, thought that it was something wrong with my mom for thinking my aunt needed professional help.

Sorry for the rant, I really needed to vent. My family is not the healthiest, yet every day, I'm still suprised about how other people act. It's a sick world.

Oh, ignore my comment.

I guess we all know couple of people like that.

When I was a kid, a girl from my class tried to convince us that Nicole Kidman was her aunt. So, when someone directly told her she's lying, she brought the picture next day.. it was a picture of her, and Nicole Kidman's head taped to someone's body, probably her moms or from her real aunt.

We live in a small country, so going somewhere abroad is a big thing, especially when it's on a different continent. So, one day she said she's going to L.A to visit her family. From here, to L.A, well, there's a 16 hour time difference.. so she claimed that in two days she managed to go to L.A, get back from L.A, see all the cool stuff and buy a shitload of clothes. Of course, no one believed her.

When I was a little older, about 12, my friend made up half of her family. She was always talking about her cousins, her aunt and uncle, and how her cousins friend was in love with her. Her stories were never crazy, she had just put a lot of work into it.. she even showed us pictures of them and everything, to this day I still don't know whose those pics were. Finally, she said herself that she made them up.. I guess she was tired of lying.

Recently, one of my friends lied about her sexual life. She was always talking how she likes to sleep around and how she has many boyfriends, and she had really crazy and gross stories, and it all turned out to be a lie.

Haha, this is great. Some really funny stuff here, especially the Nicole Kidman story. The last point you mention seems quite common among girls with no self-confidence!

I think we all know people who lie all the time. I think there are a few on this forum..... LMFAO

This girl I went to high school with claimed she was dating Joey Fatone from NSYNC. She would send herself flowers and everything "from Joey" and it was pretty crazy, the lengths she went to try to convince people they were really together.

In my defense, it wasn't said all at once, and I didn't say I believed all of it. Was just too dumb to get away quicker than I did. But thats all in the past now, thank goodness,

Yeah, I've known some people like that...I think we all come across them at some point.

The most dangerous kind of liar, of course, are the ones who tell lies that are that aren't so far-fetched, so it's not really obvious.

I have the opposite problem personally - I have really hard time even saying with "good lies" (such as, "no, you don't look terrible today").

"Maybe that's not the best outfit choice..." lol
In elementary school... well more specifically fifth grade... we got this new student. His name was Tyler. He had the deepest southern accent... and some people (not me) made fun of him for that. He was from Johnston county (which is known around here as "redneck county"). Some people made fun of him for that (admittedly, I probably did too. I was not a perfect child). Anyway, he would always tell us about his dad. One day he'd come to school and say "My dad is the sheriff of Johnston County!" The next day, he'd come to school and say "My dad is a carpenter. he made me a bed." The next day it would be "My dad is a farmer! He grows lots of food!" No one believed anything he said because he said his dad had like twenty professions and we were like "whatever." I was in safety patrol and one day I had carpool duty and his dad came... before I went and called for him, I asked his dad what he did. He was an office assistant at some big law firm downtown.

I probably shouldnt be putting this on the internet but it was on the lies that really shat me lately. I work for an organisation with lots of volunteers. We got these three vollys who were a bit ... odd. One claimed she had worked with a famous racehorse trainer and had been in a massive fall at the track (one that was all over the news) so she had lost her confidence. She was a big girl so I very much doubt she was fit enough to be riding race horses, let alone handling them. Once she started handling our horses you could tell she had very little experience. And her riding level is that of a beginner. There is no way anyone would have let her near a thoroughbred in race work unless they wanted to get sued when she stuffed up and got hurt.

A couple weeks after we got in touch with a local trainer to help us out with a naughty pony, she said she had been approached by 3 people who claimed to work for our organisation. Apparently she offered her services to the 3 people saying she would be happy to help us out if we ever needed, but was promptly told she would never be needed as they did all the training for us. BULLSHIT! Luckily the trainer talked with another coach from my centre and was informed that this was NOT true and we would still need her services.

It really annoys me when people do things like this because it reflects so badly on our organisation. I wonder what other lies they have been spreading and how it could potentially hurt our business. In saying that, the 3 oddballs are great at mucking out the paddocks so it would be a shame to lose them, I just wish they wouldnt tell such blatant lies!

I hope you will be able to find better employees. That sounds ridicolous.
Occa's story made me think of a girl I knew from the barn I used to go to when I was a teenager. We were a group girls who had dressage lessons every Thursday. Some of us had their own horses, I always rode my friend's mare that he was boarding there and the rest had to make to with the trained horses that belonged to the owner of the riding school. One of those horses was really unpopular as it was quite aggressive when you approached it and had the most uncomfortable trot you just couldn't sit, but for some reason it was a particular favourite with this one girl. She'd never use any of the other horses even though she couldn't really handle it very well (it was quite a handful). We all thought it was weird and made fun of her, but we didn't know half of it. Mind you I only learned the rest of the story years later from my former flatmate who has nothing to do with horses but knew the girl from school, where she apparently told everyone about her incredible connection to this horse, how the horse hated everyone else and would suffer no one but her and how she'd even renamed it and it wouldn't listen to its previous name any longer. It was both hilarious and incredibly sad, because obviously the poor girl had read a lot of teenage books about horses (you probably know the type) and had a vivid imagination, but reality just wouldn't oblige...

I'm trying now to think of any big fibs that I told, but other than the time I was trying to convince my kindergarten teacher that my mum had sewn my trousers herself and getting found out when she found the tag inside while lifting me from the loo, I can't think of any. I think I was too afraid of the humiliation of getting found out to tell too many lies...

Some horse people are just delusional!
I'll hold my hand up and say that a lot of the time I used to be that kid. I think it came from never quite fitting in, and particularly being at a private secondary school where although we weren't particularly poor, a lot of my classmates' parents were lawyers, doctors, industrial chemists and so on, and I couldn't compete so I came up with stories about really being from Russia or being about to move to Paris and so on. I suppose it was just a response to being in a situation where everybody was having more exciting and interesting lives than me.

One girl at my elementary school told us that she was born blind and had to have a full eye transplant, so now she could see. (Mind you, this was the early 90s. That kind of surgery didn't exist yet.) And another girl told this whole, drawn out story about how her house had burned down, and all of her stuff was ruined just because she wanted the doll I had brought to school. I told my mom about it when I got home (I didn't give my doll away though) and she said nothing like that happened. Her mom and my mom were friends.

The worst I've been told? (Other than the whole, "I'm not cheating on you!" bullshit) "No, I have no interest in your brother anymore." Then she gets him drunk and sleeps with him, when I KNOW he really wasn't into her, and didn't even want to hang out with her. Stupid vapid whore.
