Okay, so, a friend of mine has watched all of BtVS, and she absolutely LOVED it. (Naturally!) But she didn't like Angel as a character when he was on BtVS, so she won't watch it. I've told her time and time again how much different Angel is on his own show, how much BETTER of a character he is, and yet she still refuses to watch it. Has anyone else run into this problem? Any suggestions what I could do to get her to watch this FANTASTIC show?

Your friend sounds like a person of rare good taste. Angel gets better the further away from Sunnydale he gets and the longer he stays away. AS for getting her to watch Angel's show, just tell her it's the Haloween episode of "Bones"
Talk about the other characters (definitely mention Lorne as he's the least dark of the Angel characters so may appeal to someone who prefers Buffy). You could also mention episodes like Smile Time and the one with the Dance of Joy.

Does she like Cordy? Cause that's really what got me through angel, honestly. And mabye you could show her a episode in the middle of the show that demonstrates that Angel has changed? I know my best friend loves BTVS, but she couldn't stand Angel untill she watched with me the Pylea arc; she just really liked that, and it got her into ATS.

Tell her about Fred, and Fred's awesomeness!! No-one could resist watching it when they know about fred.... Ok Fred fanboying over 😛

But yh, mention how the show has a completely different feel, and like Scarlett said, tell her about how cordy and Wesley are both in it 😀

If she likes particular Buffy characters, have her watch the Angel eps with those characters in them.

But I'm thinking more about the kick-ass fight scenes, like season 1 with Faith or the fight against Lindsey in To Shanshu in LA. The Trial is also awesome (I love Darla's arcs in both season 2 & 3). Or how about AI vs the Beast in Apocalypse Nowish? Honestly, Angel (the show & character) shines in those kinds of scenes IMO.

I was initially reluctant to watch Angel because, like your friend, I didn't think much of Angel as a character and didn't think a series about him would interest me.

I watched in the end because I wasn't ready to let go of the Buffyverse, and because I saw that Cordelia was in it, and I'd liked her character in BtVS.

Perhaps you could show your friend those great fanmade trailers on youtube. Not sure of the link but I think they've been talked about here on BB somewhere. Does anyone know the ones I mean? They're linked to on Whedonesque a lot, too.

O
OhWow
Great trailers

Ooh great idea- Buffyverse Trailers is the guy's handle. Just search for his page on YouTube. He's also on Facebook.

Thanks for the fantastic suggestions, guys. I may be able to actually get her to watch something. She was rather fond of Faith, so maybe if I pop on the first episode she's in, she'll be drawn into it? She's very stubborn, unfortunately. She likes Cordelia, too, but even though I told her she moved onto LA, that wasn't even enough to get her into the show.

Step One
Trap her in a box

Step Two
Lock her in the closet

Step Three
Make her watch Angel until she likes it

No, but really. If she likes Cordy, that's good, Cordy was actually pretty cool in LA. And Wesley's there too, tell her that. I bet she'd like Doyle too. I mean, who doesn't? Tell her about Fred, and Lorne, and the episodes you think brings out Angel the best. I'm trying to get my Buffy loving friend into Angel too 😛

ROFL! Thanks for the laaugh! Bahahah
That is exactly how I was. I watched all of Buffy and loved it ( Well Duhh.) but I truly despised Angel. Mostly because I was all about Spike. And b/c he was a pretty annoying character to me. But then I was just like..What the hell. What is the worst that could happen? I mean we are talking about the Buffyverse and Joss, right? I started to miss being new to the episodes of Buffy and I wanted more. So I caved and I succumbed to the evils of the Angel series. I ended up loving it.

Tell your friend that I know from experience!! And the whole show is not all Angel. You have a whole bunch of incredible characters that you will eventually adore. And Angel is really not as much of the creepy pale stalker vampire who pops up whenever Buffy is in trouble...well he actually really is. But when I first watched Angel I was like WHAT??? He smiles? 😀 Great show, give it a chance.

LOL about the smiling.
Steph, like some have said, show her the 'Buffyverse' AtS trailers. They are AWESOME and you might get her intrigued with them. Also tell her plenty of people disliked Angel in BtVS(including me) and ended up liking him on his show. Oh and also mention the great character development of Wesley and Cordy. 😉

And because I just can't resist:

SlayerOfVampyrs agrees: Do you have Netflix? If not, you should get it. 10 bucks a month, it has ALL of the seasons of Angel. Also, thousands of movies and TV shows as well. >.< I sound like a spokeswoman for them lol

LOL, I do have Netflix, that's how I watched the entire series. But still, I'd love to have the DVDs to be able to watch them in my bedroom (no Netflix on that TV) & watch the extra features & stuff.

It's a nice touch that they have Massive Attack's 'Angel' as the trailer theme

Ah! Yeah, I totes feel your pain! I'm in the same predicament. For all of my shows, really. Weeds, Buffy, Angel....I really want the DVD's of all of them. The special features are really important to me.
