The line between Good and Evil lies in the center of every human heart.
-Alexander Solzhenitzen
Chapter I:
Sweat poured down his face, masked by the shadow of night, as the young man tore through the narrow cobble stone streets after his prey. His heart pounded loudly in his chest and the cold night air stung his lungs as he gasped to fill them. His pursuit of this creature had compromised the better part of his evening as he had only now begun to close in on it. He would not lose it again, as he had twice that night. They wove in and out of the alleys created by the old stone buildings quietly resting in the night. The man reached into his long black robe, withdrawing a sharpened stake of wood. He knew this city well, but the creature fortunately did not. It was headed for a dead end. The monster reached the end, and panic crossed its strange, barely human face for but a moment. It turned to face its pursuant. Resolve and smug confidence replaced the panic on its face.
The man used his forward momentum to thrust his fist into the creature's smug visage. The crack of the being's nose breaking echoed eerily in the otherwise quiet space. Blood flowed from its shattered nose, angering the beast as it surged forward to attack. Its motion was halted suddenly by the impact of the Black Robe's foot connecting squarely into the creature's sternum. This sent is crashing into the stone wall of one of the buildings that had cornered it, causing bits of old rock to tumble to the ground. Its head rolled back and bounced into the wall. As it regained control of its neck and began to raise its head, Black Robe pinned him to the rock with his arm and raised the stake to the beast's chest. His prey was fearless, as it smirked and growled, "Il Principe Scuro si risveglia," and lunged forward impaling himself onto the stake, bursting into a cloud of dust. A tangled look of confusion and annoyance crossed the man's face as he pulled a small cell phone from the inner pocket of his robe. He pressed a button and held the phone to his ear, "Dominique? It's done, and it's time to find her."

Alexa bolted upright, tangled in her sheets and soaked in cold sweat. Dizzy from sitting up so quickly and disoriented by her sudden change of location as she began to recognize what seemed to be her bedroom, the tiny girl slid her hand to cradle her spinning head. Well that one wins the prize for strangest dream EVER, she thought, desperately wishing to shake the vivid pictures from her head. Pushing her matted blonde hair from her face, she let herself fall back into the soft pillow behind her. Seconds later, she was jarred back into the present by the sound of her alarm radio sounding, Paranoia, Paranoia, Everybody's comin to get me"¦"NO!" she protested aloud as she rolled herself upward to silence the intrusion. She failed to account for the tangled state of her legs, which were still entwined with her sheets, and tumbled to the ground as she tried to stand.
"Perfect, just PERFECT," she sighed trying to free herself as the song blared on, increasingly louder as the seconds passed. Swiftly opening the door, an older man with gentle features and soft graying hair peaked into the girl's room,
"Alexa"¦honey?" He questioned.
"I'm alright dad, I'm really alright," she responded.
"I thought the house was comin' down," he joked in his deep southern drawl. He smiled at his daughter and pulled the door shut again.
Finally conquering the villainous sheet, Alexa victoriously shut the alarm off as the song came to an end. She sleepily made her way to the hall bathroom, pausing to pull a towel from the closet. She turned the water on, and spun to face herself in the mirror. She looked deeply into her own dark blue eyes and mused, third night in a row with that same weird arse dream. It felt real this time though. Like it was happening. It can't be real though. I mean I'm not psychic or whatever. Stupid gypsy blood. Who the crap was that guy anyways!? And what on EARTH was that thing!? And what does "Il Principe Scuro si risveglia," mean. Uggg! I should know, I feel like I should know. ALEXA, it was a dream. Get a grip. She broke her own gaze, turning from the mirror she began to remove the sweat soaked clothing. As she slipped into the relaxing heat of the shower, her thoughts returned to the dream, That man though, I feel like I know him from somewhere"¦

for whoever might actually be reading this...comments are appreciated.

Shouldering her soccer gear and pulling her long blonde hair into a messy pony tail, Alexa shouted, "BYYEEE," to her father. She pulled the door shut and tossed her bag into Josh's trunk. Joshua Ham reached across the seat to open his girlfriend's door. Alexa smiled brightly as she slid into the seat, pulling her knees up to her chest. Josh leaned across, gently kissing her cheek as she tilted her face towards him.
"I hate Mondays!" she moaned and then fired off, "And we so have to find Jack, I have got to tell her about the wicked dream I had again last night, and crap! Man I forgot to do my homework for Spanish class again, Oh, but that's fourth period, HEY! Maybe Monica will do it for me!"
Josh laughed, "You see, normal people start out a conversation with "˜hi, how are you' but you skip right on past that, dontcha?" he teased.
Alexa raised her eyebrow in a mock scowl, and gently punched the shaggy black-haired boy in the arm. Josh winced in pain, dang she can hit hard! That effing hurt!
"You love me and you know it!" she taunted.
"Yeah, yeah." He sighed, smirking at her. He took his eyes from her, looking back and pulling out of the short driveway. "Hey wait, dream? What dream?" he questioned. "Oh it's nothing. Probably just too many scary movies or whatever, but Jack is into all that paranormal crap so she might think its cool." Alexa rattled off, trying to minimize her apparent concern over the dream.
"Yeah, Jack is one weird chick, Lexa. I love the girl and all, but she can be so spacey."
Before he could ask again, Alexa feigned interest in the song on the radio, turning up the volume. She looked down at her feet, over her knees and bean to finger the laces of her Chuck T's that were peaking out from under her ripped, oil-paint stained jeans. She bobbed her head along with the music.
Josh recognized that something was troubling her. She was rarely quiet like this and he thought he remembered her saying that she hated the song on the radio. She was stubborn as hell though, and if she wasn't ready to talk, there was no convincing her. Josh had known her for three years now. They were both supposed to be going off to college next year and Alexa flat-out refused to talk about what would happen when he had to leave.
Josh had been drawn to Lexa instantly. They had an art class together sophomore year. Josh had just moved up from Florida and meeting her quickly made him glad for the change. She was unlike anyone he had ever met. She was into everything and had a natural charisma. Her dark blue eyes seemed to have a hypnotic quality to them. She was messy and artsy, tough and spunky, and at rare moments soft and vulnerable.
Tilting her head to the side, and resting it on her knees, Alexa stared at her boyfriend. He glanced over at her, his eyes always made her smile. One eye was light blue and the other was distinctively green. Gazing into his eyes, she wondered if he would think she was crazy if she told him that she thought there was some meaning to her dream.
Pulling into the parking lot of their school, Alexa slid her legs off the car seat and into the floorboard. She leaned over and grabbed her boyfriend's chin as he shifted the car into park. She pressed her lips to his, kissing him softly, breaking from the kiss, she looked into his eyes and winked.
"See, you love me!" she said as she turned to open the car door. Josh shook his head and followed in exiting. They walked, arms linked together, to the imposing brick structure labeled "˜J.P. Johnson High School.'

In the year of our Lord, Fourteen-Seventy Six, Jakob Ibekstin, a prophet of the One True God spoke before a crowd of believers. An account of his words is given here. Witnesses reported that Jakob was overtaken by the Great Spirit and spoke in a voice that was not his own. He said, "And it shall come to pass that a war for the hearts of men will take place on this tainted ground. Judgment will fall on this imperfect creation. In this time those who say they are in the Light will lie and friend will turn upon friend. The beast will take the flesh of one who is still but a child. The beast can be halted by his flesh and blood alone and she will defeat the beast with a power older than time that she alone can wield. She is Grace and Salvation will be her gift.

Adriano flipped the battered, leather-bound volume closed, sending a small cloud of dust floating into the softly lit, dingy library that he had essentially made his home over the past couple weeks, leaving only to eat and hunt. He sat in the soft glow of the lamp, surrounded by a table full of books that the young priest had been shuffling through. He was researching a project for Father Dominique, and had been for some time now. The Father was his mentor. Dominique had profoundly changed Adriano's young life, guiding him on his journey to accept his calling.

When he was 15, Adriano's parent's had both been taken from him suddenly when they perished in a terrible car accident. At the time of the accident, Adriano and his parents had been living in a small town in Italy. His family was Gypsy and moved frequently. Following his parent's sudden demise, he was sent to a small orphanage where the parish priest, Father Dominique took interest in him. Dominique belonged to an order of priests that followed the old church, the church entrenched in mysticism. A church that still fought real and tangible evils. Adriano accepted the reality of demons more easily than the elder priest could have hoped. The boy did grow up in a house with a magically inclined Gypsy mother. She claimed to have the ability to predict the future via visions, and cast spells on a regular basis. Adriano did believe his mother to be crazy until after the accident. That morning she insisted on saying good bye to him as she hugged him with a fervor that indicated that she would never see him again. The 15 year old boy pushed his mother's affections away at the time, assuming she was over-reacting. Little did he know that she was not.

Dominique had asked his apprentice to do some research related to his hunt the previous evening. Nightly, Adriano went out in search of demons and other creatures of the night. Recently, he had noticed an increase in activity. The last three vampires that he had eliminated had all spoken of a rising evil. The evil forces around him seemed to be organizing, and he and Dominique were in search of a way to stop its progress. Based on the passage that Adriano had just been reading and information that Dominique had obtained from an organization called the Watcher's Council in England, Dominique believed that they needed to locate a girl to help with the fight. This girl was one of the recently empowered vampire slayers. She was unlike the rest in that she was predicted to begin to receive visions on her 18th birthday. She, like Adriano, was Gypsy at least in part. Dominique had tracked her down and researched her and was now sending the young priest to retrieve her. She lived somewhere in the southern United States. Adriano had never been to the States. He had a sister who had moved over for a while to marry a man that she met while working as a flight attendant. His sister had met a stranger end than his parents though. Adriano knew little of her life outside of the family because they had traveled a lot when she left and she did not keep contact with her family. A few weeks after the car wreck, Adriano received a letter stating that his sister was missing and presumed dead. While he wished for more information, he had received the news at a time when he felt the most helpless to obtain it in his newly orphaned state. He thought about looking up her family in the States, but didn't even know where to begin. The young priest thoughts returned to the girl that Dominique had basically asked him to kidnap. He knew little about her other than her name. Alexa Jackson.

This is really interesting. You have done a good job introducing your story. Blending the straight ahead modern style of BTVS with the slayer and the romantic day of old preordained imagery that Angel used in it's show with the priests and the cloaked Holtz like character.
I am interested in seeing how you are going to develop the Gypsy theme.
Thanks for the heads up and looking forward to more chapters.

thank you, you are too kind.
Your word choice in the first post is a little peculiar at times. While your use of certain words does make sense in the context of the sentence, I think they are inappropriately used. The words I have highlighted certainly gave me cause to pause and stop reading.

They wove in and out of the alleys created by the old stone buildings quietly resting in the night. The man reached into his long black robe, withdrawing a sharpened stake of wood.

Dizzy from sitting up so quickly and disoriented by her sudden change of location as she began to recognize what seemed to be her bedroom, the tiny girl slid her hand to cradle her spinning head.

I understand that you are trying to convey her disorientation, but as she focuses she isn't recognizing what seems to be, she is recognizing what is her bedroom.
Finally conquering the villainous sheet, Alexa victoriously shut the alarm off as the song came to an end.

Yeah.. I get the overstated sarcastic sentiment, but, you know, couldn't she just discard the sheet and switch off the alarm?

"You love me and you know it!" she taunted.
Heh.

Up till this next paragraph I was pretty sure Alexa was just your opinion of yourself.
If Alexa is just an interpretation of you, wow. Pretty high opinion of yourself there, sweety, eh? :biggrin:

Ah, phenomenal religious language. Salvation lies with the devil!:smoke:

I think it's pretty damn good, perhaps a little too descriptive at times. I feel Adriano and his relevant history was a little too much all at once, but hey, what do I know.

Maybe we'll have another budding writer to give Bigwig a run for his money. :biggrin:

thank you so much for your critique, it is very helpful! and haha, to be honest, Alexa is a perfect image of my sister from head to toe. i admire my lil sis as you can see, and any reflection of her in me is truely a compliment. thanks again :)

Chapter II:
Night fell on the ancient city. Adriano knelt before the large cross offering up his prayer before battle. Tonight would be his last hunt before he went to retrieve Alexa.
Sancte Michael Archangele, defende nos in proelio, contra nequitiam et insidias diaboli esto praesidium. Imperat illi Deus, supplices deprecamur: tuque, Princeps militiae coelestis, Santanam aliosque spiritus malignos, qui ad perditionem animarun pervagantur in mundo, divina virtute in infernum detrude. Amen. He raised his eyes to look upon the cross, and making the sign of the cross he mumbled, "In nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritus Sancti."

Adriano exited the cathedral into the empty street. He enjoyed the calm of the night in the city as it was a stark contrast to the bustling day time rush. The thought of going to a busy airport to get on a big tin can with wings scared him more than any beast that he might encounter that evening. Dominique had assured him that he was better suited for the job than the elder man. Lost in his thoughts, Adriano continued to wander aimlessly awaiting some evil to emerge; little did he know that evil was distracted elsewhere.

Deep below the cobblestone streets lay a large hollowed out cave of a room. Its previous purpose was indecipherable. The room was full of cloaked shadowy figures moving about like a sea of black velvet. At one end of the large space stood an empty, but imposing throne forged of metal and rock. A cloaked figure in red emerged from behind the throne and spoke, "Il Principe Scuro, the burden of heaven cast out for his brilliance shall reclaim his place in one month's time." Scattered cheers built into a roar of praise. The Red figure raised its hand silencing the mass. With the silence a smaller figure, clothed in fine purple velvet emerged. Taking the hand of the Red figure, the smaller figure took the large throne. "This is your Prince, the vessel of our Lord. Venite Adoremus!" Red Cloak declared. At once the sea of black knelt before the Prince.

The young prince stood before his throne. He looked across the raging sea of black before him and smiled. His voice echoed across the cavernous space, "The time is near; His true brilliance will again reclaim this tired world. We will succeed where others have failed. I am the vessel and blood will be spilled for me. The pure sacrifice, same flesh and bone, is near." The black sea roared. "Go, bring joy to your Father," he thundered over them, dispersing the mass.

The sound was just strong enough to vibrate the street above it, causing the man wandering it to pause and question if he truly had felt the small disruption. Disappointed that he had found nothing and Adriano was now playfully kicking a small empty can of soda across the bumpy street. A small rat ran across the stone before him. Adriano hated rats, they creeped him out. The rat paused in the center of the road and rose onto its hind legs staring at the man ahead of it. Its tiny eyes flashed a violent red and it began to run toward him. As if by magic the rodent multiplied, its brethren emerged from all over the alley. They joined before the priest into a towering black mass. The pulsing mass hissed, "die priest," as it lunged forward. The priest quickly ducked to the side, grabbing a 2 by 4 lying in a pile of trash beside him. Spinning, Adriano used his full momentum to smash the wood into the center of the writhing mass, sending it crashing in all directions. He continued to swing wildly about eradicating the rats before they could reassemble.

The street became quiet again, as the priest resumed his patrol. The sun would be rising in a couple of hours and with that strange exception, the night had been a complete bust. Adriano had some packing left to do before he boarded the plane. He decided to head back to the church and get some rest. He would need all of his strength in the days to come.

Wrapping herself in a giant towel, Alexa crossed the locker room to the short muscular girl who stood smiling at her. "So what's this dream you wanted to tell me "˜bout Lexa?" Jack chirped. "It's forever long, couldja possibly wait "˜til I was clothed or something!"
"Sure," Jack replied, noting the out of character snappiness of her friend's remark, "I gotta run to my locker first anyways, I'll pick you up out front in the car, "˜kay?"
Alexa began to dress as Jack headed off towards her locker.

The halls were quiet, free from the ruckus that echoed inside during the normal school hours. Jack reached her locker, spinning the lock to open it. Her stomach began to knot and she became uneasy. She grabbed the leather bound volume that she needed and slammed the metal door closed. Jack quickly walked down the hall to the exit. Her car was just outside the door. As she reached for the bar to push the door open, she heard her name spoken in a loud whisper, "Jack."
"Who's there?" she cowered, the knot in her stomach tightening.
"Jack," it came again, from the hall off to her left. She took a step towards it.
"Jack," it came again, louder this time. Jack walked until she was to the corner of the hall, bracing herself to peak around. Suddenly the door to her right flung open and Jack screamed, terror echoing down the hall.
"Jesus! Give me a heart attack why dontcha!?" Alexa gasped. "What are you doing over here? I thought you were gonna get the car." She said softly.
"I, I, I thought I heard something," Jack paused, looking down the now silent hall, "I don't know, lets just go, this place is freakin' me out."
The two girls headed towards the door, Jack walking more quickly than her friend.

The wind blew the tall grass in the field behind Alexa's house, rustling the leaves of the large oak tree that Alexa was perched in. She lay across a large, sturdy branch, swinging her leg back and forth. Jack sat below her nestled against the base of the large tree looking up at her friend. Jack twisted a strand of her short brown hair around her finger, a nervous habit trying to soothe the anxiety created by the earlier events. "So, Lexa, couldja please tell me "˜bout this dream now? I am dying from anticipation." she giggled.
Lexa thought for a moment, wondering if Jack would understand. Jack had been into witchcraft and all sorts of new age stuff for as long as Lexa could remember, and if anyone would understand her, it would be Jack.

Breathing in deeply, Lexa began to recount her dream, "So, there was this guy, all dressed in black"¦"
Jack sat intrigued, neither girl noticing the setting sun and fact that the grass continued to move in spite of the lack of wind. Lexa went on for about 30 minutes providing a detailed account of her every memory of this dream. The remaining light was but a soft orange glow as Alexa recounted the last words spoken by the familiar man, who stated that it was time to find some girl. "What do you think?" she questioned.
"It is surely original, what was that one bit? It sounded like it's maybe Italian or something?" the brunette questioned.
"Il Principe Scuro si risveglia, I think," she replied in a bad southern rendition. "Do you happen to speak Italian?"
"Ha! I wish. No. I am taking French. You are taking Spanish, don't you have an idea?
"Not so much," Alexa frowned, "Monica has been doing my homework for months. I barely pass the tests!"
"Eh, I'll google it when I get home." Jack resolved.
"Speaking of home, you ought to get going soon, it is getting late!" Lexa said as she dropped from the tree, landing next to the stocky girl. They were only about a third of a mile from the house, which was warmly lit and inviting.
The girls waded through the tall grass towards the house, still not noticing the rustling around them.
"Jack," the grass whispered.
"Did you hear that?" she asked Lexa, quickening her step.
"Yes," Lexa squeaked, as they both broke into a run towards the house. The girls reached the door, but it was locked, Lexa struggled in the dark to find her keys. She banged on the door but no answer came. Her dad must be in the shower. Back by the large oak tree a buzzing cloud rose from the grass, gathering to form what looked like a giant dog. It began to run towards the girls. Jack pulled a small crystal from her bag and began to chant, her eyes rolled glazing over.
"A spell of safety here I cast,
A wand of might to hold us fast.
A shield before us and behind,
To right and left protection bind.
To us may no ill will come nigh,
But only She who's Rede I cry.
So mote it be."
A white light flashed around them, as Lexa shoved the key into the lock and opened the door. The light reached the running creature throwing it back, as the girls rushed into the house, locking the door behind them.
"Where did you learn to do that!?" Lexa gasped.
"Here" she said, tossing the leather-bound volume that she had retrieved from her locker. "I'm not done yet though. I am not leaving this house tonight, alright? And I have to make sure whatever that was doesn't come in here." She pulled small bags of herbs from her shoulder bag and began to mix them quickly, chanting something quietly as she lined the doors and windows of the house.

Again, drawn by the commotion caused by his daughter, Ben stumbled into the room to see his daughter and her friend sprinkling some dirt onto the carpet. Puzzled, he shook his head and walked into the kitchen. The girls seemed to not even notice his entrance. He pulled the pizza that he had been cooking and set it on the counter, "dinner's ready," he called.
"Oh my gawd! Dad! Seriously. Warn me next time or something!" Lexa chastised after both girls screamed in terror at her fathers announcement.
"Didn't know I had to in my own house," her father stated, a bit annoyed. "I assume you are staying for dinner, hun?" he said to Jack in his sweet southern drawl.
"Yes please," the frightened girl responded, "just one more second."
Jack finished the windows back in Ben's room.
"Do I want to know?" the older man questioned his daughter. Lexa shook her head.

Finally the three sat down to dinner, the girls remained hyper-vigilant throughout, turning towards every sound. Ben wanted to ask, but figured that they wouldn't tell him anyways. After dinner, he settled down to watch TV. The girls headed back to Lexa's room to get on the computer and see if her dream might hold the key to the night's events, starting with the Italian phrase. Thanks to the wonder of the internet, they quickly uncovered its meaning. The dark prince rises.
"This is officially freakin' me out, girl." Jack mumbled.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Across the sea, Adriano boarded the large plane, greeted by a much too alert and happy flight attendant. Now dressed in one of his few sets of "street" clothes, the priest stored his small carry-on above his head, keeping the text in his hands. Inside the front cover of the text, was his target's case file. Dominique had only just given it to him that morning. He sat in his window seat, and pulled the tray table down. Resting the large volume on it, he opened up the file shoved inside it. The picture staring back at him was so familiar. He couldn't sort now, why that was exactly. The plane began to taxi toward the runway, and the chipper attendant ordered the tray table to its locked, upright position. Adriano put away the text, noticing the small child seated next to him. He leaned back and drifted to sleep as the plane rose into the sky.
cool update. the italian is annoying tho. I want to know what the hell they are saying. but great update as always.
obviously i need to lose it as the priest was praying in Latin not Italian...i figured it was a pretty traditional prayer...alright, english only it is lol
Great imagery! Gotta agree with Wes P. loose the Italian. Maybe a small phrase but a whole chapter? If you are going to use Italian or some other language use italics that way the reader knows and can skip ahead, trying to read a foreign language distracts the concentration on the story.
And please not another lesbian witch sidekick...sorta done, sorta old. Just my opinion is all I'm saying.
lol, jack is not so much a lesbian--i hadn't even thought about that..haha
nice story, arabella. you've really got the flow of it down. but i'm with the other guys, the Italian is a little too much. the odd phrase is fine, but whole chapters might make your readers lose interest in this story.
one other thing i'd like to point out is you're grammer. sometimes sentences flow better if you throw in a little slang, makes them more real. try not to be so formal!
other than that, great story!
cause you asked for it 😉
sorry it is short, I haven't had time to edit the rest yet.
Adriano walked slowly through the dense fog, covering the grassy field. A large oak tree stood in the center of the grassy expanse, a girl standing below it. As he closed the distance between them, the girl seemed to glow a bright white light. Her face conveyed a quiet confidence. "Alexa?" Adriano questioned. "I am the one you seek priest. It's coming for us now. Run." the girl uttered. "What?" Adriano spoke in confusion at her command. "Run!" she shrieked as she bolted from the strong tree into the night. From the dark, a shadow took form moving quickly towards him, its teeth gnashing.
The priest's eyes shot open to find the small child, who had been quietly seated next to him, 2 inches from his nose staring into his face. Adriano attempted to scoot further back in his chair. The boy spoke "You will lose her priest." At this, he opened his mouth and black rats began to pour out climbing up the man's chest, overtaking him.
Adriano shocked himself into consciousness, jerking awake. He quickly turned to his side to see the child sleeping quietly, his mother scowling at the priest. Adriano gave her an apologetic smile and sheepishly donned the head phones the chipper flight attendant had given to him earlier. He attempted to lose himself in the cheery in-flight film.
Alexa yawned as she and Jack climbed into her bed. They had been researching Italian princes and shadowy grass dogs on-line for hours with no luck. "It was worth a try," Jack said, "but I know where we can go to look tomorrow. The same place I got that spell book we used earlier."
"Where did you find that anyways?" Alexa asked.
"I was down town in this lil book shop, you know how much I love books" the brunette paused, smiling, "and this one happened to have a great new age section. I thought this book looked super cool, I had no idea that the stuff in it would actually work! But anyways that guy in the store, super freakin hot by the way, I think his name is Matt"¦I know I have it written down some where cause he asked me if I wanted to hang out with him" Jack was now fully distracted by the thought of this boy, a sly smile covering her face, Lexa elbowed her and asked, "Could we please not drool on my comforter? So Matt, huh? What about him?"
"Oh, yeah sorry." Jack giggled "So I got to talking to hottie Matt and he asked me about practicing Wicca, so I told him that I had some luck with little spells and he didn't freak out which was cool, and he seemed to know a little about the weirder side of life. Long story short,"
"too late." Lexa interrupted, laughing.
"Anyways," Jack continued, "I think he might be helpful, that's all."
"Cool then. I am wiped out, I voted we try and sleep a little since the big scary grass monster seems to be cool with staying away for now. Tomorrow we figure out how to make that a ermanent thing." The girls fell into a restless sleep, awaken all too quickly Tuesday morning.
